“Devonport NZ - A Historical Navy Village just Across the Auckland Harbour”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2011

Devonport can be very attractive when there are activities going on such as art exhibits and festivals, otherwise it may be disappointing if you are the traveler looking for action. There's a lot to see and photograph, i.e. museums, old navy houses, Mount Victoria and Mt. North Head (which provide beautiful views of the city) the naval base, caves and the famous WWII tunnels, tangled corridors running from inside the two mounts. The food is above avarage, the best fish and ships in town is certainly sold there! (I would recommend the cafe by Victoria Theater, its the best in the area), friendly people and great for tennis/golf/water sports. Green-as, I would recommend for people who enjoy nature and long walks. Dont forget to go the beach side, it's big on the weekends, sunbath facing the city from the other side!
But in general, i would recommend Devonport as a destination to older people, not youngsters/party people AT ALL!!!!

“Beautiful village in the city, on the beach”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2011

All those who say spend only a day in Auckland clearly haven't spent time in Devonport.
It's a fifteen minute (truly scenic) ferry ride from Auckland CBD, has gorgeous clean sub tropical beaches with views of the Hauraki gulf islands, is eminently walkable (safe - very safe) with nice littel shops, a great little art house cinema and just enough nice places to eat and drink that you don't need to bother going down town.
It also has some nice reserves (public parks) fantastic vantage points on two hills overlooking harbour and gulf, and lovely victorian / edwardian clapboard houses. Its' all low rise and lovely.
It is also really easy, with car, to get up the coast to Matakan and across to the Watakeri ranges.
We spent five days there after our 24 hours from the UK, and it was perfect.
