“Bette's Best Bits”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2014

We love Devonport and we love Bette's. Better service than you might expect for a modest cafe and better food too. We've been six or seven times now and enjoyed every mouthful, but the best bits are the welcoming, friendly and helpful staff, the glimpse of dedicated chefs and kitchen staff out back, the fine wine and great beer. Go on a Friday night for fresh fish Goujons in light beer batter, house speciality big chips and fresh greens, washed down with Hallertau on tap. There's also a good selection of spirits to choose from for a nightcap. Loo walls decked out with vintage album covers give time spent in the littlest room a nostalgic dimension. Clientele are as you'd expect - mixed and varied. You can sit comfortably outside when it's warm - we saw a dog wearing spectacles with a bonnet-clad cat on its paws last Summer - strange but appealing. A bit like Bette's. Also, there's good music played at just the right level - not encroaching on conversation. Overall, Bette's is a bit of a treat - try it.

“Well worth a visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2014

Relaxed dining in Devonport with friendly service. Small plates for sharing provided an excellent meal to share with our friends who live locally. Wish we had one of these at home in the UK!

“Abysmal service and weak excuses - don't bother”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2014 via mobile

When a table of four each order individual meals, using the excuse that it is a 'sharing menu' for why two of them had finished their entire meal before the third received theirs, and the third had finished before the fourth received theirs, is weak. 25 minutes for scrambled eggs (the third meal, clearly not a sharing dish) is poor. When asked the progress of the fourth meal, got brushed off with "it's coming". Ten minutes later and no sign, obviously get frustrated. The waitresses (apparently one of which was the manager) were unapologetic and disinterested, using excuses and then changing their stories. The food was ok, however I would never go back and in this day and age with so much choice, if places are going to give you such poor service you can (and should) choose elsewhere.

“Well worth the effort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2014 via mobile

Took the ferry from the city to visit this place on a recommendation. A great choice. The service was outstanding. The selection of shared plates was superb - the lamb cutlets some of the best I have had. And a very good wine list. Appears to be dog friendly, which it applaud. And good value for money. One thing - we ate inside because the tables that were available outside were unusable. They were broken and unsteady and getting them fixed would be a bonus. Highly recommended.
