“Day two accommodation of coast to coast bike ride”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 days ago NEW

Perfect location, as immediately of the route. Clean rooms, lots of facilities. Not quite the service we got at Malham on night one but I think that's just because it's much larger. Had noisy neighbours in the room next door but we were too tired to care!

We stayed at YHA York for 2 nights 22&23 April 2015, we were part of a school trip with our daughter who has disabilities. The staff were all friendly and helpful. The accommodation was clean and modern, we had bunk beds which were extremely comfy. Myself and my husband had our evening meal in the bar area the food was good. Also the food which they provided for the school was good too. Breakfast was nice. Would stay again.

I stayed here on a Saturday night in April as part of a stag party. The rooms are small and basic but ours were immaculately clean. The public areas offer free WiFi, plenty of seating and a pool table and the garden and outdoor spaces are really nice in good weather. It's ideal for those visiting York as it's just a short walk along the river into the city (approx 15 mins) although a taxi will cost around £5 which isn't bad if split between a few people. Breakfast is served until 9:30am but I would advise getting in quick as they had run out of a few items by the time I arrived. It cost £5.95 and was much needed after a night drinking. Staff were very helpful and the atmosphere was great. Would definitely stay again.

Had a fantastic time at YHA York. First time in YHA accommodation and definitely won't be the last. Staff were beyond helpful and really friendly, clearly love the hostel and their work. We stayed with two children - 5 and 2 in a family room, basic but perfect for us. They also have a Ben and Jerrys vending machine. What more could you want?

Came here for a night and rooms were clean and warm which was good. En suite bathroom was nice however didn't have any hand wash. From the hostel we walked into York and took around 20 mins which was great and close to many attractions.

Thanks for your review, and I'm glad you had a good stay with us, and had a nice walk along the river into the city centre. YHA York is a great value priced hostel, and therefore we don't provide toiletries in the ensuing toilets and showers. We always have toiletries for sale at reception, and there is hand wash soap in all of the toilets in public areas.

I stayed here in a dorm room for one night and I thought this place was great. The staff were friendly and helpful and there is a really nice modern set up. They have a bar and serve food but there is still a self catering kitchen that can be used if needed, which I think is good because it's in keeping with YHAs traditional values but with a bit extra thrown in. The communal areas were spacious and comfortable and the whole building was generally well presented and warm. It is a little bit of a way from the city centre, but you can walk it in about 20 minutes.
The dorm rooms were comfortable and I liked that there was a light and plug socket built into each bunk. The floors are a bit creaky as it's an old building and some people went to bed pretty late and got up really early. But that's hostels for you!
A nice place and good value.

Green Features: There was recycling in the self catering kitchen which was great!

Suzanna, thanks for your review. YHA York is a modern recently refurbished hostel, but as you say, still holds true to the original idea of hostels, with dorm rooms or private rooms, great communal areas and for those who don't want to eat our great food, the self catering kitchen is always available. Hope to see you again.

YHA is located roughly a mile from York city center and the cathedral. It is easy to find and accessible without having to drive through town. They have ample parking.

Check in was easy and the staff was very pleasant. The common area is large and able to handle large groups of excited French children. They have a nice bar and serve food at different parts of the day. They also can recommend good places to eat nearby or have delivered.

The rooms were clean and comfortable. The bed wasn't the coziest, but I slept through the night. We had a four bed suite that featured in suite toilet and shower. Both were clean and the shower was hot. The walls were thin. If you have excited neighbors, have earplugs ready.

The breakfast was more expensive than it was worth. The sausages were small, the croissants were dry. You are limited to 7 items which they don't tell you until you've paid. 7 items will fill you up unless you are very hungry. The juice didn't taste fresh, and the coffee was mediocre. I would skip the breakfast and find something nearby next time.

Personally I don't fault the hostel for this, but the wifi was out for almost our entire visit. It wasn't a router issue as the staff computers were also out. They had to process check-ins the old fashioned way. I only mention this as it may be a trend.
All in all I would stay here again. This is one of the better hostels I've stayed at.

Trevor, thanks for your review and I'm pleased you enjoyed your stay. I'm also relieved that slept well, even though you say our beds aren't the cosiest. We have found that our wifi and Internet connections drops out when there are too many people using it, as was the case on the night you stayed, and our broadband provider has just increased our speed and bandwidth to try to improve this.....and it's working so far.
