“Great Value!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2013

The seating area is really nice, and the staff very friendly. We only stayed for one night, but very happy with the stay. The rooms was clean and it had a shower and a toilet in the room. The only downside with the room we were given is there was no window that could be opened, so it was a bit warm and humid waking up in the morning. Other than that great value for money. And a walk into York town centre was only a 15 min walk. Will definitely be staying here again next time we come to York

Thanks for a fantastic review, we are really pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. We hear what you are saying about the windows, when its really hot it is good to be able to open them right up. However our hostel is very popular with school groups and young families and in order to maintain a safe & secure environment for all the young people we have staying with us we need to restrict how wide our bedroom windows open.

We look forward to seeing you next time you visit York!

Kind regards
Chris

Just returned from a one nights stay at the newly refurbished hostel in York. We booked for 14 in 3 seperate rooms as we had a day at the races planned. Was greeted with a really warm welcome and a we had to get changed into our suits and we could not get booked in till 2pm then manager quickly arranged somewhere suitable for us to get changed. All changed am sorted we came back from the races a little worse for wear but the staff were very efficient and we were quickly checked in. The rooms were basic but what do you expect for the price. Beds were really comfortable and the entire building was extremely secure. We ten went for a quick bite to eat in the lovely conservatory area which was lovely. It really is in a nice setting. The one thing which makes the stay so special are the friendly and accommodating staff who go that extra mile to ensure you enjoy your stay. Will definintly be making this an annual event.

I have just come back from staying in the York hostel. They've obviously spent a lot of money making the seating area very swish, but they seem to think that appearances are more important than substance. If you were in a dorm, as I was, you could see where the money wasn't spent. There were eight people in a room really only big enough for six and with only enough storage cupboards for six. There were two showers supplied for two rooms (both I assume with eight occupants) but only one shower could be used as they were unable to fix the lighting in the other. There were two toilets for the same number of people, but one had the door so close to the toilet bowl that you couldn't close the door without putting your feet on the seat. There was a minute self-catering area that got unbearably crowded and when someone asked where they could wash their clothes, they were told that they would have to go to an outside launderette. I have stayed in many YHA hostels in England and Scotland, but although this looks smarter than a lot, it is definitely the worst one I have ever been to. If it wasn't for the lovely staff, I would have rated it even lower.

Thanks for taking the time to review your stay at YHA York. We are sorry to hear that your stay was affected by issues with the building. At the point at which you visited us back in May the hostel had only been open for a number of weeks since an extensive refurb. The refurbishment has proved to be very popular with most of our guests but we would be the first to put our hands up and say that there were a few teething problems early on. Many of the issues you encountered at YHA York have since been resolved and we are committed to continuing to make improvements to the hostel in response to the feedback of our guests.

We are really pleased that you thought all the staff were lovely and we would love to see you again some time so we can make sure you have a better experience at YHA York to remember us by :)

Kind Regards
Chris

...to plug into all the power-points in my room!!!!!
An unusual intro I know, but I never thought I'd ever find a Youth Hostel (or similiar style accommodation) where there we MORE power-points available in a room than things to plug in; I enjoyed a great nights sleep last night in a very reasonably priced two beded room that had EIGHT power-points - six along a wall and one each above the bunk-bed's reading lamp (see attached photo if you don't believe me :-), so by the time I plugged my phone, camera, and portable radio in to charge, I still have five spare power-points... Not sure if all the rooms are the same, but possibilbly so, as the hostel has clearly just undergone a major refurbishment, and all the communal areas - lounge, bar, reception, etc are in mint condition. All the staff were incredibly nice and enthusiastic, and I had a terrific stay. It's just a short walk along the river to get into the centre of York, and this hostel is a great base for an 'Explore York' weekend.

Thanks for an incredible review! Most of our backpackers bring a whole range of computers, phones, cameras & mp3 players with them when they stay, for this reason we made sure that as a part of our recent refurbishment we included a load of additional plug sockets in all our rooms... We are really pleased you enjoyed your visit to York, next time you stay you'll have to remember to bring a few more electrical gadgets with you :)

Kind Regards
Chris

A friend and I previously booked online for one overnight stay as we were joining a group of motorcyclists to ride through the Dales to the Lake District.

On arrival, we discovered that the grounds were quite spacious and so no problem for the amount of motorcycles departing from there the next morning. We were greeted at Reception by the staff on duty (all the staff we encounter were cheerful and helpful) and we booked in without any problems. We were asked if we wanted breakfast (which, if I'm being honest, I don't recall seeing the option on the booking website - but then again, I just may have missed it!) which ran from 7ish to 9am. Not knowing what time we were to depart, I asked if we could decide later - that would be no problem.

The room itself was as you would expect, in as much as it accommodated 4 bunkbeds, had a small sink and overall very clean and tidy. The shower and toilet in the adjoining area were both spotlessly clean and in good decoration. The bedding was all clean and in good condition. The only downside to the room was the instant heat as soon as you stepped through the door. Unfortunately, this was not controllable, the radiators were off and the only very small widow that could be opened was! A couple of small desk top fans were provided but did little to cool the room down. The night we were staying, unfortunately was the same night as what seemed like 4 or 5 primary school classes numbering in the 80s were running around in rooms above us with the vibrations akin to a lightning strike hitting directly below into our room.

After a shower and quick change, we decided on a beer before we went into York from the extremely well stocked bar at prices average to high. We obtained copies of various maps from the staff and were very helpful with regard to walking timings from the YHA to various points in York and nearest petrol stations.

Breakfast (now paid for at a very reasonable cost of just under £5 pp) consisted of a Full English, toast, coffee and fruit juice in addition to a continental type buffet and cereal. This was great value for money, as was the instruction from one of the staff to 'jump the queue' of all the school children starting to line up for breakfast! Great move.

Checkout was as simple and smooth as checkin.

Overall, in my very limited use of YHAs, I would say and consider that they have come a long way on from when I last used one about 20 years ago offering good accommodation and food at reasonable prices and ideal for an overnight stay with great customer service and staff attitudes.

A big thank you on behalf of myself and friend.
