“Unbelievable!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2011

I recently travelled to Clare Island to play a football blitz against other island teams around the Irish coast. I was part of a group of thirteen lads from Inis Oirr on the Aran Islands. We arrived to O'Grady's Guesthouse where Helen greeted us, around a three or four minute walk from the pier when you arrive off the ferry. She showed us our rooms, which were absolutely beautiful. We couldn't get over the standard of the accomodation for an island, nicer than any hotel. Helen told us abit about the place and we realised we were situated so close to everything we required. We arraged a time for breakfast the following morning with her. The breakfast was beautifaul and she was so nice and kind, Helen made sure we had plenty of everything. That day we had our football matches but the weather was terrible, heavy rain and strong winds. We had time to spare between games so we went back to the guesthouse as it was so close. Some of us had showers and Helen dried our wet jerseys for us, they came back all folded and numbered accordingly, it was brilliant. That evening we decided to have dinner in Helens restaurant downstairs. Thirteen of us landed into her at the same time, she had had another girl with her to help her and they were so calm and polite. Usualy if a crowd like that landed into a small restaurant there would be panic. The majority of us got the sirloin steak which was on the menu for a very reasonable price. I can safely say the steak was very close to the nicest steaks ive ever had. It was cooked perfectly. We were all full after dinner and satisfied that it was beautiful. It was our last night on the island so we obviously went out for a few beers, maybe a few too many because none of us managed to get up for breakfast the following morning and we had a ferry to catch at 9.00am. Even tho we missed breakfast, Helen made sandwiches for us with rashers, sausages and pudding in them, all individually wrapped with tin foil and then dropped this down to us on the boat. She did not have to do this at all, it was our own fault we didn'y get up for breakfast. This just shows the type of person Helen is. She is kind, generous, polite, hard working and very friendly. She runs a terrific guesthouse and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay with her and we thank her for that! :)

On a fishing trip with some friends and booked in at O'Grady's and were we ever pelasantly surprised. All of us had travelled extensively and were astiounded to find this level of quality, style, and comfort on the Island.
The welcome we received from helen could not have been warmer or friendlier - home from home! The rooms were beautifully appointed, spacious, and spotlessly clean.I had a wonderful view over the harbour.Large bathroom for a B&B with generous bath and a powerhouse of a shower...certainly helped blow the cobwebs off the following morning!
We went straight out for a few beers at the hotel.
Helen greeted us next morning and each was met with a superb full irish breakfast...grease-free and perfectly cooked.Set us up for the day's fishing!Would highly recommend this gem of a place to anyone travelling to the Island and have to say the dinner menu looked very inviting.Already planning a week-ends return with my wife!!

Room Tip: They are all good!!

My wife and I traveled to Clare Island from Los Angeles (Inspired by the Saw Doctors song ‘Clare Island) to visit Clare Island. My brother, who is a hotel manager in Dublin, also came along for the visit. It was a very pleasant surprise to find this guesthouse. The rooms were first rate++, the food was excellent++ and the owners were so gracious and kind. The island itself was a wonderful getaway from our crazy city life. We walked around most of the island in about five hours and only saw two cars. I would highly recommend this island and guest house to anybody who wants to get away for a day or two. Well worth the trip from Los Angeles.

we had a wonderful stay here for 2 nights - wanted to spend a last minute 3rd night , but they were unfortunatly full. Everything was great, the food, the "bean an ti" & the weather !
Maybe some kids board games in the sitting room would be useful if unlucky enough to be there when raining.

We looked forward to visiting Clare Island with its small island population and its charming castle. We took the O'Grady ferry over (you receive a discount if you are staying at O'Grady's Guest House ) and had a great crossing with beautiful views of Clew Bay. We arrived quite early at the guest house and we were pleasantly surprised at the modern design and the roomy guest lounge. Lunch was available right at O'Grady's and we took advantage of that.. Our room was very spacious with a comfortable modern bed. And most importantly, the bath was luxurious by Irish guest house standards! A wonderful soaking tub and a terrific shower. After a 6 mile hike to the lighthouse during the afternoon, we had dinner in the dining room. It was a sophisticated and excellent menu - not what one might expect from this isolated setting. It was perfectly prepared and served After a visit to Grace O'Malley's castle at twilight, we slept well to the sound of the surf just below our window.
We cannot end the review without talking about the delightful Helen O'Grady, our hostess on Clare Island. Helen is a young woman with energy and wisdom seldom seen in someone her age. She works hard from dawn to dark running her guest house and her efforts pay off for her. She converses with her guests in a most engaging manner. It was a pleasure to spend time at O'Grady's and chat with Helen. Overall, this stay on Clare Island was the highlight of our 10 day trip to Ireland. Don't miss this if you are touring the West Coast.

Stayed here with my husband and kids for two nights. The guesthouse is located really close to the harbour where the boat docks and just up from Clare Island's beautiful beach. Rooms were really spacious and were a perfect size for us (family of 4) and were spotless. Had dinner on both nights in the restaurant downstairs and had the best chowder I have ever tasted! The food was delicious and the great staff and owner Helen catered to our every need (and we had quite a few)! Would highly recommend this guesthouse for its proximity to the beach and also for the great food. Will definitely return.
