4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2012

My partner and I spent one night at the Westwood during a tour of Ireland last week. I chose it for the location and price, as it was more affordable than the hotels closer to downtown and had easy parking. The hotel is beautiful inside and out, and has the feeling of a well-loved Victorian mansion. The hotel staff were prompt and friendly and we found our room comfortable and large. We were disappointed to find that we could not book at the restaurant that night as it was full, however we were told the bar was open and served good food as well. We found the bar enjoyable and acceptable for what we wanted, although it was fairly casual. We did enjoy people-watching the locals as well as watching the Olympics on the large tvs.

The hotel breakfast was pretty good, although the scrambled eggs were a bit rubbery for my taste. We were also forgotten shortly after sitting and had to flag someone down to order and ask again for our tea & coffee. There were also no croissants left, as well there was not much cheese or fresh fruit as it was about a half hour before the end of breakfast. This was okay for my partner as he ordered cheese and meat for his main breakfast, which he said was good. I thought it was a nice idea that they let you order the hot parts of the breakfast fresh, but the service was a bit lacking when we were there.

We had an issue with water pressure and heat of the water in the shower. The pressure was really poor and the water was much too hot!! I mentioned this to a hotel staff person when we checked out, and she seemed surprised and said she would make sure it was taken care of.

Overall this hotel fit our needs, but with a few small issues that can be easily remedied by hotel management. I would recommend this hotel, especially if the issue with the shower were resolved. The room was very comfortable and large and the location is ideal if you want a stop-over on your way around Ireland. The quality for the price was very good, which you will not find closer to downtown.

Our family of four stayed at the Westwood House for two nights in June 2012. We had two connecting rooms each with a double bed. The rooms were clean, attractive, and very comfortable, and it was quiet at night. The bathroom was a good size as well. The staff was so friendly! The young woman who was at the desk both days greeted us warmly and was very helpful, drawing on a map of the Connemara area for us and giving us tips on where to go. The breakfast was tasty; we had some hot items which we enjoyed plus there was a buffet area to help yourself to other items. We spent some time in their pub as well, and enjoyed it. The lobby was pretty, with areas to sit and talk. There was free parking, and the hotel is a short drive from the city center. Another guest told us it took them about a half hour or so to walk there. We had no trouble with the wifi. All in all, our stay was great and we would happily return.

My wife and I stayed for two nights as a double celebration. Found the staff very friendly and the young man on reception arranged wine and chocs to our room and a complimentary bottle of wine with our meal in the restaurant. We were on B&B and ate one evening and the food was excellent. hotel located on outskirts of city and we needed the car as it would be a fair distance to walk.

Dear Dave and staff, my wife and I would like to thank you most sincerely for overseeing our wedding on June 30th 2012 in your establishment.
When we met you 10 months previously we felt great warmth from you and your staff as you made us feel confident with your professionalism and in your experience.
Throughout the time leading up to our wedding and with all that that involved and the fact so many guests were traveling from all over Ireland, England, Holland, Germany and Australia we were uncertain of numbers till the last week and worried there may not have been enough rooms for them. However, your advice, predictions and patience took a massive weight off our shoulders and we could concentrate on other matters.
All the way up the last day yourself, Dagmara, Sharon and Ciara were there to take every phone call, every email and every visit to answer our questions and put our minds at ease.
We can understand why The Westwood House Hotel is highly recommended by all who visit there.
When we did our tasting I was a little pessimistic that the consistency would dip on the wedding night with the high volume of guests but they were to be proved unfounded. All of our guests were highly satisfied with the meal and service of the dinner staff. The amount of people who commented on the endlessness of the food was an excellent standard to have met.
Our guests were delighted with the hotels seating area options while they waited for us to return from the photo shoot. From the lobby to the bar to the corridors to the outside seating ensuring great freedom for all to mingle and relax.
The fact that you greeted us on our arrival added a little sparkle to our day also.
From the Friday to the Monday we had over 70 rooms booked in total and we know for certain that everybody was very happy with their rooms and the entire hotel.
The wedding night was just brilliant for my wife and I to unwind and enjoy our day knowing you guys were working hard behind the scenes to make sure we felt that way.
The day after our wedding was such a delight for us as you had taken secure possession of all our gifts giving us piece of mind, our bill was set out in an manner that was easy to understand and your staff were as polite and friendly as they had been throughout our whole experience of dealing with the Westwood House Hotel.
Our wedding day had many facets to it and with so many playing a part to see all ran smoothly we have no doubt yours was the toughest task which was carried out in a professional and caring manner.
We are very grateful to you all and remain indebted to you.
Mr & Mrs M. O’Brien.

The Westwood is located just outside of Galway City Centre - about a 30 to 45 minute walk. There is ample free parking on site and you can easily get a taxi to/from the city centre for between €10 - €15. (There may even be a bus that goes by the hotel.) The advantage of it being just outside the city is that it seems very peaceful and relaxing - a theme that follows through to the rooms. The layout is not typical of a hotel - more of an old victorian home with lost of winding corridors. We stayed in a room with 1 double and 1 single bed - the room size was average. The room itself was well appointed with toiletries (body wash, shampoo, moisturizer and soap), an electric kettle (with tea, coffee, milk and sugar), an iron & ironing board and a hair dryer. The room was very clean and the beds very comfortable. The room also had air conditioning and heating that you could control yourself. The windows were a bit weird. There were 2 large windows - 1 only opened a few inches and the other seemed to be painted white and you couldn't open it! The main problem with had with the room was internet access. Although there is WiFi in the hotel the signal is weak in places and we were unable to connect from our room. There was also an Ethernet connection but we did have some problems getting a connection to that initially. When I called reception about the connection they were helpful and reset their signal which worked for a short while. If you are travelling with kids and lots of electronic devices that need internet access, make sure you request a room with a strong WiFi signal. The hotel lobby is spacious and there are lots of nooks and crannies on the ground floor where you can sit with some privacy. The hotel has room service and the bar food is very good. Overall the staff were friendly and helpful. There was some confusion both when we checked in and when we checked out but I think this was do to a new staff person they were training at the front desk. There isn't an onsite leisure centre - if you want to go swimming you can gain access for a small fee to the Kingfisher Club which is just a few minutes drive from the hotel. There aren't any vending machines in the hotel and no convenience store close by. Overall, it is a lovely hotel and a great place to use as a base if exploring Galway City or Connemara and surrounding areas.

Room Tip: If you need internet access, specify this when making your reservation and again at check in. Other...

We visited beautiful Galway and environs as part of our Easter Irish tour. The hotel took a bit to find as it is not located within the city of Galway but rather in the Galway University Area, and the adress featured on booking.com at the time of our trip was wrong. Location is a bit inconvenient if you don't have a car (which wasn't our case) since it takes more than 30 minutes to get to the city of Galway on foot, so this is not the best-located property unless you're looking for calm environs. Also, bear in mind that parking in Galway is not the easiest of tasks around, and chances are you'll have to make use of private parkings.

Other than that, the establishment is located in a beautiful countryside house with lots of nice touches to it. It is understandably popular with weddings and other local events, although we had no noise-related problems whatsoever, unlike previous reviewers. Our rooms, while comfortable and spacious enough, were a bit outdated and the wood presented some visible damage; besides there was some problem with running water although the property was quick to point that out and, moreover, it was not the hotel's responsibility.

Breakfast was pretty average, even if there was a decent range of options.

Staff, on the other hand, was very polite and always ready to help.

To sum up, this is indeed a quaint hotel but, given its location and what it actually offers, I found it to be on the overpriced side.

It really is a nice establishment with VERY helpful staff and a very well appointed venue. The two downsides, as highlighted by other reviewers, are firstly the location, which is either a downside or plus depending. Its a downside if you want to be in the city as parking in Galway is .. well its a challenge. Its a plus if you want Galway as a base for drives to Connemara or elsewhere. The second downside is the lack of leisure facilities though you can access the facilities including 25m pool, at NUIG, for a fee. These are compensated for by the other advantages of the hotel. Good value, and the restaurant has a really nice menu which is good value. Eating portions in the bar by the way are mountainous !
