“Family Suite? Bring your earplugs”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2013

Booked the three bedroom family suite and arrived to find that the room is 10 feet from Lake Tahoe Blvd which is THE main thoroughfare through South Lake Tahoe. Heavy traffic noise throughout much of the night. Suite itself was average at best. Gaps in the front door frame allowed a narrow view into the room from the outside (nice huh?). Portable A/C units had duct work that went through rough holes in the wall. Front closet looked to be a former bathroom, because what looked like a hole for the sewer line WAS STILL OPEN in the closet. No sewer smell, but still.....come on, at least put a board over the thing. Lighting fixtures put on the wall to "fancyfy" the place looked ok I suppose, but upon close examination, did not actually have any lights in them. Classy.

All in all, definitely not worth the money and I'd only recommend this particular suite if maybe you are in to partying all night, stumbling back to the hotel and passing out. Then maybe you wouldn't notice the room.

Unbeknownst to us, we ended up where we spent our honeymoon 56 years ago!!!!! How's that for coincidence.
Location was very good - near shopping and casinos. Price was right for the room. Small but very clean. Lighting was not very good.
Would not hesitate to stay here again because of its locality and price.

Room Tip: Because it is near casinos, people tend to come in very late or very early in the morning. We had a...

Highland Inn is one of the best motels that we have slept in when visiting the States. It was a cheap room and when we arrived, we came into the most perfect room. Very nice furniture, great king-size bed, big flat screen TV, air conditioned and a nice toilet with bath. We walked 10 minutes to a private beach for a swim in the Lake. This was a little pricey we had to pay 5 $ each. The hotel is right next to a mall with shops, Starbucks, Jamba Juice and a big Raley’s and about 15 minutes walk to the Stateline of Nevada.

I was cautiously optimistic when I read that the Highland Inn had been recently renovated and figured I'd take a chance and stay there during my friend's destination wedding.

I was looking for something cheap and nice and I got both at the Highland Inn. I paid a very fair rate and got a clean room with modern upgrades, including a 42 inch flat screen TV!

My only criticism is that the bed was a little hard... All in all, a great value!

The rooms are comfy - not fancy or modern, but cozy and clean. The owner was extremely outgoing, helpful and freindly, and made us feel truly welcome. There is shopping and dining within easy walking distance. Like many older properties, they could use additional outlets for plugging in all our devices.

It is often said that all hotels look the same with your eyes closed. If all you want to do is sleep here, then this is fine. It is clean. It is within walking distance to beaches, the Gondola at Heavenly, hikes, shops and casinos. The window blinds don't block out the on-all-night lights outside so bring eye shades if you would find this difficult to handle. Bring ear plugs if you don't want the early morning trash people at the restaurant next door to wake you up.
Despite being on the ground floor my friend and I felt safe. We were able to park the car right outside our door. The hotel manager and his friends who popped by to say hi kept a close eye on us. They were friendly and we felt as two women traveling the "guys" would have been there to help if any unlikely but strange circumstances arose.
There was a massive TV in our room. We didn't turn it on. There was effective air conditioning. There weren't any tea or coffee making facilities. There was a good size fridge in our room. We had plenty of towels, but no hair dryer.

Room Tip: Make sure to ask for a non-smoking room. We asked for an upgrade to a room with two queen beds inste...

The biggest reason for my choosing this hotel was the price. The front desk guy, Jeff, was always very polite and helpful. If you are hoping to have a really nice room (5 star-type room), you won't find that here. It is an older building that has been renovated and you can definitely see that, but it's decent. We had two queen beds and it was fairly tight quarters walking around them (i.e. I got a few shin nicks on the bed frames), but it met all of our needs. It did come with a fridge in the room, so we could stock up on snacks and drinks. The bathroom has no vent, so we had to leave the window open much of the time. The window had no lock, as the clip that it clicks into to lock (at least for room 201) had been ripped off of the trim. I found my own creative way of locking it, although it is probably not a big deal since it is on the top floor. The hotel location is really what is best about it. It is a couple of doors down from the street corner where you can walk across to all of the shopping and restaurants at the Grand Marriott buildings and the gondolas. Breakfast tip: The Driftwood Cafe is right across the street when you cross at the stoplight and it is top notch as far as breakfast goes! We didn't try lunch or otherwise there, so I can't speak to that. As far as the comfort level of the room goes, the a/c unit is really small and it takes a LONG time for it to cool the room down. And i'm not even sure if the room cooling down was attributed more to the cooling down outside at night or the a/c unit itself. The heater looks much larger and perhaps more useful, although we never needed to utilize it. The beds and pillows weren't that comfortable to me, so I spent a lot of time tossing and turning. I think they probably weren't supportive enough for my needs, but some people may prefer that. All in all, for the price, this place is a decent place to stay. Great location, clean facilities, good service. Not high end by any stretch of the imagination, but not bad if you want to save some money for food and/or souvenirs. If you don't plan on spending much time in the room anyway (which is how our trip was), you probably won't mind it at all. Make sure to stop by Zephyr Cove. It's only about 10 minutes NE along the lake on the main road and it will be worth your time.

Room Tip: We had a room on the top floor at the front of the building nearest the road and we couldn't hea...
