“Extraordinary Creativity & Warm and Friendly Atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2013 via mobile

This restaurant had appetizers and entrees that showed tremendous creativity with flavors that were wonderful. Also, the presentation was beautiful. The staff were fantastic, providing outstanding service and friendly conversation. Having lived in Malibu, I appreciate outstanding food and good service. The quality of the food here was outstanding. This place was truly one of the best I have encountered. It is one that you will truly enjoy. Don't leave Lake Tahoe without visiting this outstanding and memorable restaurant.

“Return Visit Disappointing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2013

My husband and I have dined at Evans before and decided to make it the place to celebrate our anniversary this month. We called a few days ahead and requested a special table as we said we were celebrating our anniversary. When we arrived, and this was a weekday night, we were given the worst table in the restaurant closest to the kitchen noise and dishes. After about ten minutes when it appeared that the other empty tables were not reserved, we requested to be moved to a better table. They obliged and gave us a great table, but I don't know why they didn't seat us there immediately as the restaurant was not full. We ordered a bottle of our favorite wine off the wine list, only to be told that they did not have any on hand. Our dinner started out not like we envisioned and we found ourselves disappointed as we know it has been rated #1 on Trip Advisor. After they served some pate, we ordered an appetizer, salads and the rack of lamb which was very good. They did bring complimentary lemoncello after the meal. The gourmet food was great, but I couldn't give our last visit a 5-star rating. We've had nicer anniversary dinners elsewhere.

“As good as it gets!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 9, 2013

On our first night in Lake Tahoe we had dinner at Evan's. It was simply wonderful. The food was incredible. My wife had the Sea Bass and I had the Lamb Chops. We had a private table in the corner for two. We had a wonderful bottle of Barbera (Windwalker) from nearby Somerset county which was to die for. Service was excellent and friendly without edge. We loved it. The dress is professional casual although according to today's standards that often means flip-flops and a tee-shirt. Boo! We loved it so much we decided to make reservations and come back on our last night. It was that good!

FOOTNOTE: They say; "You can never go home again." Well maybe that goes for certain restaurants too. Our second visit was not nearly as grand as our first. Our requested table in the corner, in the back, had been given away to another couple. We were seated at their main table and told this was a "special table" just for us. Unfortunately it was right by the hostess stand. Com'on, do I look that dumb? Don't answer that!

Our service was not nearly as good as our first time there. This is a small place which was half full on our final evening. After waiting eight minutes for a server, we had to ask for a wine list. Now this may sound picky but when you're paying $200.00 for a dinner for two, we expect the best. (Plus they were out of the Windwalker Barbera)

Bottom line is Evans Gourmet Cafe is a wonderful place to enjoy a wonderful meal. But if you have that wonderful experience, tuck in in your heart, savor it and don't risk fate!

“Great food in "down home" atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 26, 2013

The food and service were top flight and they earn the "gourmet" name in their title. The food was all great, reasonably (not cheap, but way less that big city restaurants the cost way more for what you get); good/reasonably priced wine list and bargains by the glass; fresh bread...what's not to like (except eating so well no room for dessert which looked as good as everything else).
