“Another Great Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2013

This was our firth year staying at Timber Lodge. If you are looking for a cozy cabin in the mountains, this is not your place. The key here is location, nice rooms (but no balconies), excellent valet service and the ability to have a kitchen with a one or two bedroom suite, or a small service kitchen area in a studio. The pool can be very hectic....but remember this is summer in Tahoe and a family get away location for many Northern Californians. We never eat on property. If you do your homework you will find many restaurants within walking distance and some a short drive. We use the Marriott as a home base and go off to hike, kayak, sail and enjoy the beautiful Tahoe area.

I took my wife here for her birthday and we had a blast. The hotel staff was excellent at check in and overall feel from all the staff was friendly and open. We checked in at around 9 pm on Thurs. evening and Julian from the front desk assisted us. His demeanor and professionalism showed through as he checked us in. We had a great time and the room was top notch. We went to a water aerobics class given by Amanda and was treated to a great early morning work out. Amanda even shared a local restaurant recommendation - the Red Hut - which we went to and had a great breakfast. We also had the opportunity to eat at the restaurant - Fire and Ice - our server Fiona was excellent and even went above and beyond her way to find out about a local event that was taking place that evening.

Overall our experience was top notch and the hotel was very convenient to everything. We had an excellent time at an excellent resort.

I would have given this hotel 5 stars but for the internet speed. More on this later. The pluses are location, location, location. I stayed here with my wife and 3 teens in early July 2013. The location is fantastic. We stayed in a 2 bedroom suite with a kitchen. Tons of space and the room was quite and comfortable. The pool is great but is only 4 foot deep. That really sucks! There are over a dozen places to eat within 100 yards of your room. The hotel has a cookie place, ice cream, burger king, pizza (very yummy) a couple of deli type places and an Asian buffet place (Fire & Ice) that cooks the food in front of you. (Expensive, so I would recommend lunch @ $14) Across the street is a Mexican place, a subway and a bunch of other places. One block away is a Casino. The Location alone is worth the trip.

On the down side the Lake is a 5 minute walk (not too bad). Then there is the internet speed. I had several pieces of equipment that I tried to connect wirelessly through out the resort. The top speed I could get was about 54k. Dial up is 28k. My 3G through verizon was 100x faster but the service in the resort area (and all of Lake Tahoe) is spotty. The internet was free, but even Holiday Inn has free internet at 3G speed.

One last thing. We stayed here the week after the 4th of July and the place was pretty slow. I requested a room with a view and got a view of the valet parking courtyard. Although we spent little time in the room, I would think they would place the guests in a room with a view when requested and especially when the hotel is not close to being full.

Room Tip: There is grocery store across the street with DVD rentals for $1.

Okay, so this vacation style resort/timeshare villa has finally convinced us that these ARE NOT the kind of Marriott properties that we will ever stay again.

The vacation timeshares are in what is now the main part of south Lake Tahoe near stateline and the Heavenly lifts. This all seems great but remember that this means it is extremely crowded. If you are wanting the gorgeous lake views, it is not here. If you are looking for extreme crowds, this is your place. We were wanting a mountain/lake getaway and would not choose this location again.

The property itself only has one restaurat called Fire & Ice and it is an expensive Mongolian style BBQ place. But at $28 per person, it is pretty spendy for this style of food. There are other dining options in the Heavenly village area that are a little cheaper.

We have one simple rule we like to adhere to and that is we do not want to hear our neighbors in the next room. This one did not pass the test.

We were told our room would have a goregous mountain view but this basically meant looking at the garage units across the street with a vague glimmer of brown hillside behind it.

The parking is $26 for in and out valet. There is a free casino parking lot about 5 minutes away behnd Harvey's casino. I might recommend dropping off your bags and parking there. It sounds cheap, but I recommend this more in that that valet parking is a cluster "F" at check-in time and check-out time. Avoid this area around 10am (check-out) and 3pm (check-in). The area is so poorly designed is can barely handle more than 5 cars.

Lastly, anyone with Marriott status should not expect any benefits here or any timeshare vacation Marriott. They simply do not do anything.

But all is not bad. The staff is nice enough and the room itself was standard. This type of hotel might appeal to many families or those looking to be in the action.

Room Tip: If you want a quiter place to stay with beautiful mountain views and trails galore, we found Squaw V...

We spent 5 days at Lake Tahoe over the July 4th week. This is such an amazing place to stay. We were within walking distance and everything we were interested in doing. We had a two bedroom (the beds were super comfy) which was spotless and provided everything including a full kitchen, living room two large bathrooms plus a washer and dryer. If you get a room facing the lake, you can see the fireworks from your room, which were spectacular!

My family and I spent the 4th of July weekend at Marriott Timber Lodge and all I can say is beware of this hotel. Where do I start?

1. Valet staff employee tells my wife to "stop b*tching!" when questioned why no-one notified her that car was ready and waiting (out of site). Young man is lucky I was not within earshot or I would have "parked" him on pavement. No excuse for a hotel employee to mouth off regardless of how busy they may have been.

2. No, there is no wooden roller coaster on the ceiling. That is the AC working.

3. "Family Friendly" should not equate to kids run amok! Pool policy allows over indulgent mothers to plop little 12 month old Johnny into one hot tub after another (there are 3) with diapers on. But it's ok because they are "pool diapers". Also encountered pre-teens practicing their backstroke in our hot tub and dumping their pineapple drink in another tub. This happened at 10:00 at night! Regarding saftey of "pool diapers" Marriott needs to educate themselves on this (here are a couple of helpful links that cover what an unhealthy practice this is).

http://www.cdc.gov/healthywater/swimming/pools/swim-diapers-swim-pants.html

"Swim Diapers & Swim Pants
The use of swim diapers and swim pants might give users, parents, and pool staff a false sense of security regarding fecal contamination."

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/childrens-health/CC00003

"Can babies or toddlers wear diapers in the water?

Various types of diapers are designed for underwater use. They're water-repellent and fit snugly around a child's thighs and waist, but they're not waterproof. If your child has a bowel movement in the water, fecal material may escape the diaper. A dirty diaper might contain diarrhea-causing germs, including the parasite cryptosporidium — which can contaminate pool water or other swimming areas. In otherwise healthy people, a cryptosporidium infection causes upset stomach and diarrhea."

We confronted the front desk manager (Andrew Jansen) regarding the situation at the pool and we were met by indifference and a smirk when we said the hotel should review it's pool policy.

4. Lastly, this is a TIME SHARE ESTABLISHMENT which means that everyone else will get squeezed into whatever little corner of the hotel is available.

Thank you for sharing feedback regarding your stay at Marriott's Timber Lodge. While the valet parking is outsourced to another company, there is no excuse for the rude treatment you received. This will be addressed with the parking manager immediately. Your comments regarding the pool have been forwarded to our recreation manager to review and take action. Thanks once again for your comments.

This hotel is nothing short of spectacular. New, spotless rooms with all the amenities you could ever want including a super comfy bed. location in South Lake Tahoe as well. We stayed the week of July 1st. The staff was wonderful. We have 3 boys ages 11,8 and 4. We were surprised to find tons of activities for them at the Cubs Den. Each day my boys were so excited to see what was on the hotels daily itinerary. Marriott threw a pool party for the 4th of July. A few activities offered were, pie eating, balloon toss and hula hoop contests. An alligator wrestling match, live music, BBQ and slushies. We took advantage of the hotels private lake to watch the firework show and thrilled with the local and the fabulous firework show!We will never stay else where when traveling to South Lake Tahoe. Five stars aren't enough for this hotel!
