“Style and Grace, a Quiet Island of Sanity, Beautiful, Clean, Great Hospitality”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2006

Owned and designed and operated by two partners, this place is simply a standout by any criteria you wish to employ. The rooms are beautiful, quiet, well designed in every littlest detail. The beds are superb. The breakfasts are spectacularly well planned and presented. There is simply nothing to complain about!

The grounds are spacious and create a quiet and beautiful island retreat from the noise, tumult, cares and craziness of a resort town. Overnight stay or all week, you'll simply adore this place. My wife and I have returned many times. To be greeted with such warmth and genuine interest is a rare delight.

There's phone service, high speed internet, a huge spectacular common room with fabulous fireplace, lovely tall pines on the grounds. A wine and cheese in the early evening. Off street parking, and large showers and fireplaces in the rooms. It's just perfect.

Just completed a 5 night stay at the BBI. I second all the previous remarks of excellence found at this great place. What a refuge...feels like going home to see two wonderful friends (Kevin and Jerry) after a day of snowshoeing. These guys are two of the greatest hosts (owners) you'll ever find. Yes, the food is fabulous, the lodge is fantastic and the extra treats (great soaps) are special. We met some great friends just to add to this wonderful experience. We'll be planning a return trip for sure!

This B&B is a great combination of architeture, comfort, and style.
The rooms and cabins each are decorated in a different style but in keeping with the overall ambience.
The Innkeepers are friendly, helpful, and low key.
The wine and appetizers that are served from 5pm - 6pm in front of the large open fire provide a focal point for conversation with the other guests.
The full breakfast served each morning by Jerry and Kevin is excellent.
This is a one-of-a-kind place

Stunning building and grounds, very comfortable bed, spacious and beautifully detailed rooms, delicious breakfasts and wonderfully welcoming hosts. The wine and cheese in the early evenings are a delightful touch and give you a chance to meet the other guests. Just the place that is needed before and after a strenuous day on the ski slopes. We can not wait to go back!

Every year for past 14 years we have left all our cares behind and hit the slopes at a different ski resort around the country. With our dear friends, Rick and Susan, we venture out to a new venue to see how the mountain is, what the town is like, the apres skiing scene, the restaurants and the accommodations. Our rating system is ski poles instead of stars. A four ski pole rating is the "top of the cosmo" in our book. And we literally keep a ski book of our 14 years of adventures.
As with any vacation, there is always trepidation when booking a place to stay. Will it be clean, will it be located well, will it be all it claims itself to be and most importantly, will it meet our standards?
Where do I start regarding the Black Bear Inn? Ok, let's start from the outside in. If you are one to judge a book by it's cover (like me) then you will be thrilled. It's darling. It looks like a lodge from the outside and around back is so quaint with the several cabins that are scattered on the grounds.
We stayed in one of the cabins. It was a 2 bedroom, 1 bath with a living/dining area and partial kitchen. Wonderfully appointed with a great fireplace. Wonderful privacy. It was snowy and snowing so that just added to the character of the lodge and cabins.
There's a hottub that we should have taken advantage of, but ran out of time. But, that was only because when we came off the ski mountain we went straight to the lodge for wine and appetizer hour. That was the best treat for tired weary skiers. Sitting in the lodge living room, sipping wine, eating cheese all by the huge river rock fireplace talking with the owners, Jerry and Kevin. Great guys!
I could go on and on, but I won't, but I will tell you that the breakfasts are amazing. They are awesome chefs. Their attention to detail was like none other. Even the placesettings for breakfast were different EVERY day that we were there. This breakfast is NOT like any other B&B we've stayed at.
There is not a single thing we would have changed. They were so gracious, the beauty of the setting, the location and the breakfasts will bring us back without a doubt. The Black Bear Inn is not just a FOUR SKI POLE place, but we had to rate it an unprecidented FIVE SKI POLES!!
Heavenly indeed!
Warmly, Deby and Blair

My girlfriend and I spent a weekend at the Black Bear Inn in South Lake Tahoe to ski, dine and relax.

The Bed & Breakfast is impressive. The main lodge has a beautiful common area, with a large fireplace, soaring ceiling and comfy sofas and chairs. A hearty breakfast is served here (8:30am-9:30am) and wine & cheese from 5pm-6pm.

We chose to stay in one of the 5 available cabins. The cabin, like the main lodge, is very well appointed with a comfy king bed, high ceilings, a large bathroom, a gas fireplace and kitchenette (more on this later). A large armoire contains a TV, DVD player and a VCR. Overall, the cabin had a roomy, upscale feel.

Now for some downsides. Because the Inn is built from new construction (2001), you won't find a wood burning fireplace in any of the rooms or cabins. This takes away from some of the ambiance we would have liked.

For cabin-dwellers, don't plan on cooking a fancy meal. While the kitchenette does contain a microwave & large refrigerator, there is no stove, oven or toaster. We discovered this omission after a shopping visit to the local market, challenging us to learn the finer skills of microwave cooking fresh salmon.

Some other issues: the otherwise large cabin was stingy on closet space (one small closet in the bathroom and an area to hang coats inside the front door). One of us felt the TV was too small (a diminuitive 15") to watch movies from across the room. Oddly, we found no stereo or CD player in the cabin. And while the large bathroom had three comfy robes, they only provided one sink.

But these nits are relatively minor: we thought the Black Bear Inn was a wonderful place in a great location. It's a 5 minute drive to Heavenly and across the street from a great Italian restaurant (Cafe Fiore). We would certainly recommend a stay during your next visit.

We had a magical stay at Jerry and Kevin's Black Bear Inn. Our beautiful rustic cabin was furnished in authentic western antiques complete with Ralph Lauren bedding and linens. It was so comfortable, right down to the fireplace. The property is gorgeous, in a beautiful, quiet setting, yet so close to the nightlife that So. Tahoe is famous for.
Breakfast was in the elegantly decorated rustic lodge and was cooked to order. It was delicious. We will return very soon. Thanks to Jerry and Kevin for their gracious hospitality
