“average hotel for a short stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2013

This Days Inn is in a beautiful setting but the hotel really isn't all that beautiful. We needed a place to rest for the night before continuing on from California to Iowa.
We chose the Days Inn because of a coupon in one of those travel newspapers. When we arrived, none of those rooms were available. *surprise* We ended up with a $60 with 2 queen beds.
The room was set up in a way I appreciate. The shower area, sink, and toilet are in one area and then just outside that is an area with a large mirror, counter, blow dryer, and an outlet a curling iron. The coffee maker was also there. The bathroom had no exhaust fan but did have a window that opened to some building next door. The air conditioner in our room was very noisy. It would start up with some sort of pre-warm-up that would last a couple minutes, would then blast cold air for a few more minutes, would shut off for a few moments, and then start all over. We were exhausted, so the noise wasn't an issue.
Our room had no tub, just the shower. The shower head was positioned for someone about 4'8". I am 5'11" and had to duck to wash my hair. It was equipped with the teensiest shelf ever made. It would hold a small bottle of shampoo but whenever I tried to add something to it like a bottle of body soap, something else would fall off.
We made the mistake of using the queen bed next to the air conditioner. The bed itself is positioned right against the AC and wall. Whoever has that side will have to crawl over the other person to get out.
Hotel parking is right next to the rooms. There are coffee cans sitting all along the flower beds between the rooms and parking lot. We could smell smoke all night. In the morning, several bikers got up to leave around 6:00 am. They revved the bikes up for about 10 minutes before taking off. That served as our alarm.
The front desk check in clerk was incredibly friendly. She was also there in the morning and gave me a box to carry coffee, juice, and toast back to the room. (and also came around to the other side of the desk to hold the door open for me) Breakfast consisted of coffee, cereal, milk, juice, packaged rolls, toast/butter/jelly, There really wasn't an area to sit and have breakfast that I could see. I did notice one table but that was it and was in use. I was fine taking stuff back to the room. The small lobby area also had USA Today and several local travel pamphlets.
We didn't have any huge issues with the hotel. It was fine for what we needed - a place to sleep. While driving around town, we noticed many other places that would be worth a second look. There are many mom and pop-type places that looked interesting and that probably didn't cost much more than what we paid. While it was clean, the Days Inn looks like a place that hasn't been renovated for some time.
We did not use the small pool. It was lackluster and surrounded by a parking lot. If we'd had time, we probably would have used it.
The Days Inn is in a good location - close to a few fast food places, quaint little shops, local restaurants, gas stations. It is a "get what you pay for" place. The front desk clerk was the highlight. If she hadn't been so nice and if we hadn't been so tired upon check-in, we may have looked further once we knew our coupon wasn't going to help us.

Room Tip: There really aren't too many choices here - all rooms are on the same level with a parking lot i...

Hello IowaLakeGirl78,

Thank you for staying with us and thank you for posting this TripAdvisor review. Yes, our hotel is in a scenic area. There is so much demand for the coupon rate and as those rooms are the best priced, they are rented first. Like you said there is a hair dryer in the room. We also have coffee makers in the room. If you are interested you can ask the front desk for a hair straightening iron. We provide you with an iron and ironing board upon request. You can park your vehicle right outside your room. I am so pleased that you found us friendly during your stay. Please come back soon.

Sincerely,

Jay D

I'm convinced that nobody would ever book a room at this place if they were able to check it out first. It's very antiquated and badly in need of renovation. To make matters worse, we'd booked a "queen suite" through Expedia, but were given a standard queen room. When we questioned it, the women at the front desk essentially couldn't have cared less.
We called Expedia and they found us another room at a much better place at no extra charge, so it turned out much better than it started.

Dear pcfriar67,
Thank you very much for taking the time to write your review. We are truly sorry about the carelessness of the front desk staff. Such carelessness is unacceptable, and we have terminated the employee in question. We are always taking guest comments into weekly meetings to improve our service to our guests and we appreciate your review of our property. Rest assured we are working to address the issues you mentioned and invite you to stay with us again soon.
