“Unexpected delight!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2009

My daughters (ages 14 and 16) and I were totally unfamiliar with South Lake Tahoe or the hotels there when we stumbled upon 968 Park Spa Hotel in the evening after a lengthy drive from Yosemite. What a treat! Not only were the staff extremely accommodating upon our arrival but the hotel appeared to be a gem between what appeared to be quite a few lackluster hotels/motels in the same block. We lucked out. We were destined for Heavenly Valley Resort/Gondola Ride the next morning which to our surprise again was walking distance away. "No need to move our car from the hotel's parking lot" management said.....just walk over. The beds felt like Tempur-Pedic softness and the sheets and European duvet comforter added to a great nights sleep. As we were leaving the next day we had the opportunity to see on the ground floor the sauna, relatively large hot tub and outdoor pool. Nice and inviting! The only downside was the noise from vehicles passing by outside our street side window throughout the night. It was louder than expected and woke me up on various occasions. Provided I next get a room away from the front of the hotel, we will certainly be coming back.

Fine except, NO AC! Really? I mean I understand the eco-friendly idea, but if we are going to pay that much for a hotel room it had better have AC.

Their website is very appealing, but reality sets in when you arrive. First the positives - bed comfort, and good location. We were disappointed for several reasons however: Our room had one bath towel, & one bar of soap for the 2 of us (sink outside the room with shower); there was an iron, but no hair dryer; no air conditioning in the room, & we were told to just keep the window open; no coffee available in the lobby the next morning @ 8:15 am; the wood treatments looked like tossed out lumber scraps, etc. - I guess we expected more for $150/night.

I wanted to clarify the statement "(sink outside the room with shower)" The sink is in the guest room. It is not in the same room as the shower and toilet so that guest can use the sink while somone is in the shower/using the toilet.

I also wanted to comment on the statement, "Green Marketing is a Gimmick" Those in the green industry are very aware of "Green Washing" which is the practice of appearing green while not actually being green. We have gone to great lengths to assure that we have done everything to be a good evenirnometal steward. We have been awarded the highest certifications from Eco-Hotels of the World and the State of California's Green Lodging Association. We are also playing a leadership role in the El Dorado County Geo-Tourism program whose mission is to bring awareness to the public about the area's green-tourism opportunities. Additionally with this project and a board membership on the South Lake Tahoe Lodging Association we a creating guidelines to help all of Tahoe's hotel become a destination for environmental stewardship.

From the moment i checked in to the moment i checked out service was amazing at this place! The hotel is about 2 blocks away from all the action in South Lake Tahoe and the prices were very reasonable. The place has a fantastic mixture of modern and cosy.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS HOTEL! I will definately be staying there again.

- also, if you need a guide to the nightlife ask the manager Ted.. he pointed me to all the right hot spots in town!

The bed and sheets are sooooooo comfortable! Haven't slept that well in a long time. The rooms have a cool style, was really impressed when I first walked in. The front desk was super nice and helped me figure out what to do while I was in Tahoe. The pool was great and I actually got to hang out in one of there cabanas for free. Being able to walk home from the downtown party scene also came in handy. Def will stay here next time.

I was really disappointed in the "so-called spa resort" and we found that it was really only a re-modeled 60's era motel with a sauna & massage & hot tub area, not a resort or anything. It was very warm, and ther was no air conditioning, just a strange arrangement with a fan, that required you to remove light bulbs from it in order to use while sleeping. The rooms lack a fridge or microwave, but do have nice Plasma TV's, parking is very strange & kind of tight for many cars, you have your choice of a view of the street & noise or an alley and trash cans. Breakfast is coffe & a few light items, we were glad Starbucks was close. The "eco-friendly" re-model is heavy on things like exposed metal pipes, sheets of painted plywood, and concrete - just like on some of those home remodel shows. It looks nice from a distance, but up close, it is not so nice. Also, the Internet was "spotty" and often went out. When I went to check out, they refused to give me a bill, as I had pre-booked on a booking engine & said they could not give me one! We felt completely ripped off and wished we had stayed in a chain motel instead or at one of the casinos & saved the money. This was one of the first times I really felt let down by Trip Advisor!

Thank you for your review. We always appreciate feedback and always seek opportunities to improve.

I want to take this opportunity to address some of your concerns.

You mentioned that the room was warm, as an eco-resort we give up some luxury for for a more simplistic way of living that preserves the environment. Our window open all the way and the rooms cool nicely as the temperatures go down into the 40's at night. We have however purchased more powerful fans for the rooms.

As far as being a "re-modled old hotel" we spent millions of dollars on the finest available amenities such as egyptian cotton sheets, 42" flat screen TVs, $2,000 mattress as well as full gut of the building leaving nothing original but the studs while reusing materials in a highly artistic sustainable manner.

Expedia provides the invoice for you. We do not receive the retail invoice from Expedia and we are fined if we provide this to you. This policy is consistent with all hotels.

Finally, we don't provide a breakfast. However we do offer complimentary coffee and tea as well as pastries delivered fresh every morning from a local baker. For breakfast we recommend the locally owned Driftwood Cafe or Alpine Sierra Coffee located in the Village across the street.

Once again, thank you for the opportunty to serve you and for the feedback.

Before even getting to our room I knew I would stay there again! It was very cozy and rustic, but in a hip and modern way. It had all the amenities that you could want in a hotel such as a comfy bed and flat screen tv, but with an eco-friendly undertone throughout the whole hotel. It was a great place for a couple and I will be back with friends for a winter ski weekend. Great location to EVERYTHING! Loved it!
