We went to the Shark And Stingray Feeding centre in Dandenong. I had seen a few friends via facebook mention it, so thought we should check it out too. It's open from 9am every morning, so we went around 9.30 on a Sunday morning. As I have a 2 and a half year old, this time in the morning does not faze me. So for a little time, we were the only ones there. A group of younger school age children arrive for a birthday party, and then a few more people. But as there are so many "pools" and animals to see, feed & pat. It wasn't crowded at all.
The Rays & Sharks are just amazing and wonderfully tame. They just seemed to all swim around minding their own business and will come up to you when they want a feed. I found it so crazy that some of the small sharks would rub up against your leg (like a land animal) and not be satisfied until you give it a pat. Both my kids LOVED this experience. (2 & 15 years old)
I was worried that the little one would be scared or not want to get into the water: I didn't have to worry. The wetsuit and water shoes helped and the calmness of the marine animals certainly made all the difference. Kids & Adults of all ages can participate and enjoy.
The staff were lovely, they ensured we understood the rules prior to entry; Including mentioning the RSPCA taking serious issue with anyone mistreating the animals ect.... The place was clean and had non slip mats around each water area. What would be nice would be an education corner or something, they do have posters on the walls about the different species of Rays & Sharks.
It is rather expensive for a visit: You pay entry fee (29.50 for adults), then a $15 wader/wetsuit fee & additional for extra ray/shark food ($10 for an extra 4 serves). that all adds up for a family! The expense is the only reason I chose not to give it the full 5 rating. I think $15 per person for a borrowed wetsuit on top of a $30 "entry" fee is a little crazy! But that is just my opinion.
I would definitely recommend Shark And Stingray Feeding Centre in Dandenong. VIC and we will be going back for another visit.
