“Disappointing for the price”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2012

From previous reviews, and from the price, I was expecting something special. The theme could have been developed more imaginatively to add character, and the outside made more attractive. The decor is shabby and the room smelled damp. The staff were helpful but not professional. The internet connection was only available in the bar and was very slow. The cooked breakfast was generous and there was plenty of hot water.

We stayed for one night, but it won't be the last time. The bar is very cosy and the staff and locals very friendly. We had an evening meal that was good quality, and the breakfast was amongst the best we've had.

The bed was very comfortable and there was plenty of storage space. The bathroom was huge with plenty of hot water.

Definitely great value for money, we are looking for an excuse to stay again

This hotel could do a lot better if managed properly by the landlord. and is not worthy of 4 stars. Green mould grows on the outside walls of the pub. well over due for a paint up.The central heating is very poor and bangs and clanks disturbing sleep. The bathroom suite is very dated with a shower that is almost unusable with little water pressure. The hotel is in a lovely location but only worth a visit if your desperate.

Room Tip: Ask a member of staff for a room with the best water pressure if you want a shower, and with good he...

just a little stay, but now we know where it is we will be back! No airs and graces but comfortable accomodation, nice food and lovely people. RE: previous review.... regarding food - yes meat sliced slim but you could have as much as you like. Very accomodating to anything that we wanted. Puddings especially YUMMY..

We have just got back from a 3 nite stay at the Railway. I want to say thanks to all the staff for making our stay lovely. Nothing was too much trouble, the rooms are a good size, and the bathrooms are large. Yes, like the other reviews I agree the bathrooms are dated, but they are clean and fit for the function once the shower mixer tap is coaxed to the right temperature! Beware of the tv wall bracket-both my husband and I banged our heads while making a drink as the telly is right above the tea making facilities. The bar has a good traditional atmosphere and not at all 'locals only' we were made to feel at home. Breakfasts- a traditional choice in fry ups with eggs laid in the garden, toast and cereals, juice and tea / coffee. For a no frills b&b when walking and villages are your type of break, the railway hotel is a good choice.

There's been a hotel on this site since the 1850's and you can probably guess that it's right next to Appledore station.

The accommodation is at the rear of the hotel with a row of "Bates Motel" style rooms ( without the cross-dressing and big knife). I stayed in Room 7 which was a twin with 2 narrow single beds- the one I slept in was comfortable. The shower was an old fashioned type which took some operating as you had to fiddle with the hot and cold taps until you got a suitable temperature. No frills, clean and perhaps a little dated but it certainly would give Travelodge a run for its money, with the advantage of having a real ale pub attached!

The pub was what I would expect a typical village pub to be. There were 3 real ales on tap- tried them all in the spirit of balanced research! I also ate from the varied menu and had cod and chips. It came with a bucket of Tartare sauce which is a major plus for me and was fine. I had Treacle pud and custard to follow and this was also fine.

I needed to leave by 7.30 am and the staff were extremely accommodating and had a full english breakfast on my table within 5 minutes of arrival at 7am. Very good it was too- though I do like a good quality sausage and this one wasn't top of the range, though that's probably a bit picky.

Very friendly and I would certainly stay again.

Lovely location and friendly staff.

But all in all a bit dated and realistically not worth the money being asked.

Rooms were clean but in serious need of some work and did smell a bit damp. Ensuite was handy but out of date and could really do with a power shower and bit of modernising. We were unlucky to pick a cold night in June and certainly noticed it in our room.

Good Location to investigate the Romney Marsh but I'm sure there is better value for money out there

Room Tip: Friendly staff but sure you can find better for the same money
