“Can't recommend it highly enough”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2013

I loved this place and was very sad to leave after six days and really had to drag myself away. The food is excellent, the rooms have a spectacular view of the beach/sea and the place has a very pleasant and relaxed atmosphere. I found all of the employees to be extremely professional and helpful, and of course, Freddie is great. I will definitely be going back at some point. The wifi was OK - definitely better in the common areas but I could also get it most of the time on my balcony too.

Room Tip: Rooms closer to the common areas have better wifi. I stayed in Room 12 which is right above the rest...

We returned to Freddie's after an absence of a year, because in two months in Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia, we kept going to places that weren't as nice as Freddie's, and finally surrendered to the inevitable. Since last year, Freddie has addressed the security issues by beefing up the room safes, and having guards around, so that is no longer an issue. The bungalows remain rustic but very comfortable, and the reef in front still provides very nice snorkeling.

As always, it's the food that sucks you in. The breakfast buffet is always very ample and varied, and Freddie continues to be passionate about providing excellent buffet suppers for his guests. The variety of dishes and the quality of the food are unsurpassed, and the homey environment is really conducive to meeting people who are also enjoying a good time and a great meal. Staying at Freddie's is like visiting your favorite uncle the master chef at his nice beach cottage.

We booked for a week last year, and stayed 17 days. This time, we made sure we had tickets out, so we didn't get so comfortably locked in that we couldn't tear ourselves away. We still regretted going.

The cottages are average, but the view is magnificent. The staff is really friendly and the breakfast and evening-buffets are just wonderfull.

Fredddie and his folks can help you with almost everything, plane-tickets, transport in, to and around Banda Aceh and Pulau Weh.

We had planned 3 days, but stayed 7.

We and the children [aged 9, 4 and 18months] had a great few days at Freddie's. Lovely location - right on the beach with amazing child-friendly swimming and snorkeling. Food very good - buffets excellent value. Very helpful staff, especially Freddie, who gave excellent advice on things to do and arranged some very good [and inexpensive] trips. Freddie and the staff really seem to genuinely care and wanted to do their best to ensure we had a good time.
Highly recommended for a family holiday and hope to return.

This is a very hospitable place on a beautiful, mountainous speck of an island. Freddie, a South African, is the genial host, along with his son, Brendan, and a team of hardworking local staff. Freddie provides a very high level of service in a rustic beach setting. Just take taxi or tuk-tuk from the ferry to Freddie’s and he’ll negotiate with the driver and add it to your bill—no hassles. There is a wonderful swimming beach with a float anchored a short way out. The place fills up so it's best to book in before you arrive on the island.

The 9 simple bungalows all face the sea, with the original five on one side of the main building and another 4 clustered on the other side. There are a series of steep, uneven steps between buildings that require a certain degree of nimbleness to navigate. Freddie and his staff prepare a buffet breakfast that is available for all guests (you’re only charged if you partake) and a buffet dinner most nights (reservations required), where the menu varies considerably, ranging from European, Middle Eastern, Indonesian, etc. An ‘a la carte’ restaurant is available at a separate kitchen where a bevy of local women preside. Brendan and local fisherman bring in fresh seafood every day—it doesn’t get any fresher than that. Some days they make a big bonfire to grill huge batches of fish.

The simple bungalows are made of matted material with a thatched roof. An effective fan and the sea breezes keep things cool. Many an hour was whiled away in the hammock on the balcony. There is a small tiled bathroom with hot water. Amenities include a large 5 gallon jug of drinking water, refrigerator, electric teakettle, tea/coffee, overhead and bedside reading lamps, an ample power strip and free Wi-Fi (strongest in the common areas). We didn’t notice any mosquitoes and only a few tiny ants but there was a can of bug spray in the room. Our double bed, two twin beds pushed together, was comfortable, and we just happened to be there as they updated the mattresses with new ones.

One of the best things about Freddie’s, from a Western woman’s perspective, is that there is a designated “International Beach” where I felt comfortable swimming. There is a sign that asks people to cover up beyond that section to respect local traditions. Freddie can arrange for any activity, such as motorbike rental (it only takes a few hours to go around the island), diving, snorkeling, fishing, etc. We enjoyed the local farm animals ambling around, with cocks crowing, ducks waddling, cows lowing and goats strolling on the beach.

The only downside for Freddie is that this was his retirement project and he never gets a day off! If you think he’s slacking one day a week, no, he’s over checking on his restaurant at Banda Aceh.

Room Tip: All the rooms face the ocean but the five original bungalows, which sit in a row, feel a little more...

Freddies was our first stop in Sumatra and it was great!! We had a very nice bungalow overlooking the beach and the clear blue sea. The vibe at Freddies is really relaxed, the staff is nice and helpful, and Freddies dinners are the best. He makes superb tasting dishes and explains how he made them with great enthusiasm. The front door snorkelling is absolutely beautifull: nice corals, colorful fish, and the water is extremely clear. We would really love to come back to this place!

I went to Aceh with my 2 friends. I chosen Freddies because it was the most convince website I found in the internet. Our friend who hosted us in Aceh also recommended Freddies to stay. And we proved it. We've been very satisfy by the excellent services, hospitality and at most for The Open Kitchen, that's what I want to call it. You could drink water and eat fruit for free and just serve yourself like in your own home. The bungalow is not fancy but comfortable and good price for 3 person, cost like $10/ person. You could enjoy the beach view direct from your bungalow on your hammocks :-) . The food had good smell and taste, Freddie, the owner, is the cook and he managed everything simple. I recommend you to stay here. Damn it we only stayed for 1 night. Gotta back soon with more people.
