Wow is how it starts, and then it just keeps getting better and better. Isla Palenque is a unique, and outstanding experience that immerses you in a beautiful island setting, surrounded by untouched jungle, and complimented by incredible service and equally outstanding food. We were only able to stay 4 nights, but are already figuring out when we can go back. Our 4 night stay was filled with some of the best food in Panama, deep relaxation that is only possible in such a distinct setting... you are on a beautiful island in the Gulf of Chiriqui after all... nothing quite like letting the sound of the ocean and the jungle lullaby you to sleep as you relax on your oceanfront balcony... and as much or as little to do as you may want. We spent our time on the island doing various activities, as well as just swimming at the different beaches that Isla Palenque offers. We were able to take a day trip out to Isla Secas for a terrific bit of snorkeling and lounging about with lunch and cocktails, and also really enjoyed the sunset trip to the big beach where we swam, and relaxed with some sangria while we watched the sun go down... beautiful. The resort will provide you with an activity schedule when you arrive, so you just pick and choose from there what you want to do... no pressure whatsoever, yet plenty of things to choose from.
From your arrival through the end of your trip it is clear that the developer of the resort has made a conscious effort to blend the resort into the natural setting of the island. The architecture is a perfect match for the surroundings, and gives the resort an overall feeling of belonging to the island. Whether you are relaxing in your room, hanging out in the main building living room, or dining under the bohio, you are immersed in all that is Isla Palenque. There is always the sound of the ocean, the feel of the jungle, and open and spacious views to connect with nature. In our case, the architecture, the layout of the buildings, and the spaciousness really resonated with us and definitely added to our experience there.
As far as the staff goes... they were wonderful. They are attentive, courteous, and friendly. What a great group. They took what was going to be a great experience and somehow elevated it even higher. Ben Loomis and his staff at Isla Palenque have really got something special going. Outstanding!
Isla Palenque serves three meals a day, which when you say it like that sounds a little pedestrian... the food here is anything but. We were fortunate to be traveling with another couple, so it made it easy to try all the choices at each meal... and wow, are we glad we did. The food is simply incredible. The Chef prepares meals that are satisfying on so many levels. A combination of his culinary skills and the super fresh ingredients ( you will see the garden when you take the island tour ) make for a dining experience that is as good as it gets. When you consider that it is all taking place on an island it becomes even more impressive. Throw in some well thought out cocktails and delicious desserts and you get a lot of “wows” being thrown around ( do get the fried peanut butter and jelly sandwich topped with fresh made strawberry ice cream for dessert when you see it... wow! ). Great, great food.
When you put everything together as they have at Isla Palenque, you end up with reviews like this one, filled with words like outstanding, beautiful, and wonderful. The team at Isla Palenque is deserving of every bit of praise that they get, and we hope to experience it all again soon.
