“Fantastic Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2011

We have had the pleasure of staying at Dolserau Hall several times over the last 12 months whilst organising our wedding reception which was held at the hotel in Summer. On first sight of Dolserau Hall and after meeting the manager Lou, our hearts were set on this lovely hotel.

The Victorian country house has bags of character throughout all the rooms and communal areas. The setting is beautiful, with great views of Cadair Idris and the surrounding mountains and forests. The grounds of the hotel are very well maintained and come alive with colour in Spring.

The staff are absolutely brilliant - always friendly and attentive yet never overbearing. They are very knowledgeable about the local area and only too willing to go out of their way to be helpful. The team is led by Lou who also did a great job of coordinating all our wedding reception requirements (many of which were last minute). The faultless and seemingly effortless running of our big day was testament to the enormous efforts of Lou and the Dolserau team.

The food is truly excellent and really has to be experienced. The menu in the restaurant changes daily with lots of fresh local ingredients complimented by an extensive wine list. The breakfast selection is incredible.

We have received nothing but praise from our wedding guests and many are planning to return in the near future.

Dolserau Hall, a Victorian Country House Hotel in Dolgellau, Gwynedd. Set in the heart of the beautiful Snowdonia National Park, Dolgellau, North Wales. The hotel's position is stunning, with panoramic views from every room looking over the surrounding pastures to the hills on either side of the valley. My room (#15) here was cozy, a single bed on the top floor with a dormer window and simply a princess feel with satin comforter. I loved it even though I had to manoeuvre a huge suitcase in. A nice big bathroom, tea making, cookies and a t.v. What more did I need!

Dinner in these types of hotels is wonderful. You come down at a certain time and sit in the lounges until you are called. They want to make sure your whole group is there and then you go in at one time. It’s nice because you have already made your choice so the kitchen is prepared for you.

The area surrounding the hotel is beautiful and this has just recently changed hands so expect even more wonderful things to happen. Especially with the gardens. When walking around the Coach House, I discovered a walled garden in need of some loving care. They will be doing that. The walls are dry stack and covered with shrubs right now but what a sight that will be when renovated.

I forgot to mention all the sheep, it was soothing to hear them in the background….and if you are a guest here every afternoon enjoy Afternoon Tea!

The reviews about this hotel are glowing and that is partly why we booked but after staying here for 3 nights we feel there is much room for improvement. The decor in this hotel is the first thing that hits you - it's like something out of the 1980's - garish carpets, wallpapers and in our room we had a 'fitted wardrobe around a bed' ensemble that wouldn't look out of place in a caravan, nasty coloured bathroom suite...the lounge has no atmosphere and chairs look like they have come out of a nursing home. Perhaps some people like being told that you must order your evening meal no later than 8.15pm and that you have to endure the lack lustre lounge, in full 100w bulb lighting while you make your decision but we found it all very prescriptive and not relaxing. There were good points, the boot room is excellent; room was sparkling clean - but so it should be; the food was lovely (lots of choice at breakfast), staff in the restaurant were very attentive and friendly. But this in no way makes up for how pricey it is, for over a £156 per night I'm expecting standards to be high oh and the sting in the tail is having to pay extra for using a credit card - this is a cost that I think the hotel just has to stand. I think they can do better.

The positives:

Lovely little place, beautiful surroundings. In terms of food, the breakfast was tremendously good. You get the full range of hot and cold breakfasts. It was a delicious feast. The reception staff were also very friendly and helpful.

And now the negatives:

We came with HF Holidays and paid a pretty penny for our stay.

However, the servicing in the room was not up to par. We found hair on the bed covers when we came in. The daily maid service wasn't thorough. Linen wasn't changed and the bed (which we had just politely tidied) had not been made up properly. Vacuuming had clearly not been done thoroughly or at all.

The room (a double) was also a lot smaller than expected.

Lunch and Dinner were a bit poor - great portions - but unfortunately just not tasty.

I think cleanliness is key and this was missing here.

We lived in the area until recently and Dolserau Hall was always our first choice of a good restaurant when we had friends visiting or just for a special occasion. We went several times before and after the takeover by HF and the standards didn't drop at all.

Had a great couple of days in Wales with Dolserau Hall as our base.

Staff constantly friendly and welcoming - from making the booking by telephone through to departure.

Our room was ready on time with afternoon tea being served shortly after our arrival. This was a nice touch, with everything we tried being delicious and seemingly home-made. Apparently, afternoon tea is complimentary when booking dinner bed & breakfast.

We thought the four course dinner was excellent value, with food of a generally high standard. The wine list was also better than expected.

If anything, breakfast was even better with a surprising range of fruits prepared in a variety of ways, cereals, yogurts etc. followed by a number of cooked breakfast options which included Manx kippers (wonderful). We simply couldn’t manage the warm croissants and preserves afterwards. The tea and coffee were good throughout our stay.

We stayed in a room 6, the “Camomile Lawn Room” as this was the only Principal room they had left given out short notice booking. Although it appears from the website pictures that one or two of the other Principle (best grade) rooms may have larger bathrooms or a slightly better finish, this room was still very large and pleasant with plenty of room for a king sized bed and separate single bed, sofa, chairs, table, large flat screen TV, built in furniture etc.

Although the website and advertising for this hotel doesn’t seem to focus on it, we found Dolserau Hall to be particularly child friendly. This felt more to do with the thoughtfulness of the management and staff than the provision of any particular facilities. Our son very much enjoyed exploring the grounds though – the sheep on the lawn and dragon flies around the Lilly Pond.

My only tip would be to say, remember this is a small hotel set in a Victorian country house in a fairly remote location. Consequently, there will be the odd squeaky floor board. They also don’t have the facilities to offer room service, or extended dining hours and you will probably have to ring a bell to have someone serve you from the bar. These might be negatives in a city centre business hotel but here it’s all part of the charm and the more personal experience.

We would definitely recommend and will be returning.
