“Fantastic Week at Tuscookany - Torre del Tartufo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2012

We had a fabulous time at Torre de Tartufo in September 2012. Chef Franco and Paulo were super - and with their teaching, coaching and final touches, the meals we enjoyed each evening were superb. Not to mention the wine, as well as the liqueur Franco served us after dinner each night. We had great fun all week and enjoyed the humor, laughter and stories of Franco, Paulo and our fellow cooking companions. The breakfasts and lunches were great too. Our accommodations were excellent as was the entire villa and property with its swimming pool, hot tub, patio, dining room and view of the Tuscan Hills. Manager Barbara was great - helped us retrieve the luggage the airline lost, gave us good advice on side trips in Tuscany and organized the one day group excursion to an family run olive oil operation, a goat farm and cheese making, and wine tasting at a fabulous estate. It was a fantastic week!

We did the 7 day Italian cooking course and loved every single minute. The property alone is everything you could dream of in a Tuscan villa. Wonderful accomodations and the common areas were super. This hilltop villa is at the end of a winding road and therefore secluded and quiet with amazing views. The staff were beyond words. Barbara the manager is a gem and wonderful to be around. Franco the chef was excellent. He really teaches with passion and makes the classes fun. Any experience level can learn something and not feel too intimidated. Paula his assistant was also helpful and made the logistics of the kitchen hum. The equipment and kitchen where impecable. We made great friends with the other clients and the staff. This was without question the best vacation we have taken...and we have taken many. Don't think twice...sign up for this experience...you will not regret it.

From the drive up to this property to our reluctant departure, we had a fabulous experience. Having read previous reviews, we had high expectations, but I can honestly say they were exceeded. The property is stunning, with pretty much everything catered for, including separate lounge areas, full access to the kitchen, dining area & bar. All of the staff were extremely helpful, & always on hand. Barbara was a star, even helping me to organise my case for transporting back all the 'goodies' I'd purchased!! I must admit, I thought I'd feel a bit intimidated by being in the same kitchen as a professional chef, but Franco was ever helpful & attentive. With a glass of wine on hand & The Rolling Stones / Queen accompanying our culinary efforts, this has to be an experience that I would love to repeat one day. Fantastic!!

This was the full, seven-day cooking course, and what a marvelous experience it was, from beginning to end!

From the moment we arrived, Barbara (the manager) made us feel as welcome as family. Our two bedroom "Basilico" suite had a sitting room with fireplace, and overlooked the pool and the Tuscan hills across the valley. Since it was October, the down comforter on the bed was cozy. After a wonderful communal breakfast with the other guests (all of whom were delightful people), each morning was free to spend as we saw fit. Having rented a car in Florence, we were able to explore the beautiful Tuscan countryside and nearby medieval towns such as Poppi, Anghieri, Arezzzo, and Cortona, returning to the villa for a tasty lunch. Some chose to simply relax in a chaise by the pool with a book or walk the trails through the woods surrounding the property.

Of course we were all there to learn about Italian cuisine, and Franco (the chef) and Paolo (the assistant) were the perfect couple to teach us. This was not a "fluffery" cooking course--it was the real deal! At 3 pm we all assembled in the large, well-equipped kitchen, where we were divided into four teams and given assignments to make the various dinner courses, as well as some of the lunch dishes. We all got a chance to make the antipasti, pasta, main, and dessert courses, working with different people each day. Franco would begin each session by explaining the ingredients and outlining the procedures for each of the courses, referring to the menus in the cookbooks we were all given on day one. The ingredients always included wonderful, organically grown produce and fresh meats. The cooking assignments were often challenging, even for those of us with some cooking skills, but Franco was always there to assist and advise.

We would cook furiously until about 7 or 7:30 pm, then head back to our rooms to freshen up before re-joining the group for a glass of wine or two before sitting down to dinner. Paola created beautiful and imaginative table decorations, different each evening. Franco would say a little about the wines we were having as we tucked into the first course. Needless to say, we ate very, very well, and the fare was all the more tasty because we had cooked it ourselves. We talked about each course, asking the team who had prepared it for details, giving applause for truly outstanding results. The meal would end with Franco and Paola marching in with wicker baskets full of after dinner drinks, bottles clinking. Wonderful food and wonderful company!

Friday was "excursion day". Barbara had arranged for a small bus and a charming young Italian woman to take us on a tour of nearby Anghieri, including a small specialty textile mill that had been in operation for ages. After a walking tour of the old section of town, we visited a nearby working artisanal olive oil production facility and vineyard, run by the same family for centuries. We were treated to an olive oil tasting, and then served a delicious lunch in their home--very gracious hosts, indeed. The last stop was a 16th century villa that had been restored by a local psychiatrist. He personally showed us his beautiful home, and then conducted a wine tasting consisting of two award-winning wines produced from the vines on his property--a very nice Chianti Classico and an absolutely stunning Super Tuscan. What a treat! Several of our party bought cases to be shipped back to the States. This day was special, and we were very impressed that Barbara could have put together such unique and interesting experiences.

The final dinner on Saturday was a special one, served with excellent Tuscan wines. By this time we all felt like we'd known each other for ages, and the room was filled with lively conversation and camaraderie. We shared email addresses and promised to share photos of our wonderful week together. We stayed up late, chatting in small groups, and talking about what an incredible week it had been.

On Sunday morning, we said goodbye, with a big smile and hug from Barbara. As we were leaving, I told her that we couldn't think of a single thing to suggest to make the experience any better. If you love cooking, and you love Italy, you've got to do this!

This was the most amazing experience. From the superb quality of the accommodation, the wonderful location and the truly talented skills of Franco the chef, what fun and pleasure this cooking vacation offered to all in the group. I travelled as a single person but was welcomed by Barbara the manager of Torre del Tartufo and the rest of the group immediately, and never once
felt uncomfortable being a single. Highly recommend this vacation and villa and cookery school to absolutely anyone - whether you think you can cook or not - Franco is a brilliant fun teacher. Lots of time to relax and soak it all up. Couldn't think of of a more beautiful location.

We were so lucky to find Torre del Tartufo when we were looking for our wedding destination in 2006. Everyone was so wonderful - even having Franco meet us at the villa prior to it opening for the season in March so that we could see it. We spent a week there with our family and friends in July/August 2007. Our blended American and Dutch families were at home there - having Barbara speak Dutch was the icing on the cake allowing my in-laws to feel comfortable there. The 'villa' as we call it now is my heaven on earth. Pippa and Barbara were wonderful with helping to coordinate catering during our stay and our ceremony, including helping us find musicians, photographers and florists. We had two cooking classes with Franco during our week - which were AMAZING - including everyone's favorite..pizza in the wood burning oven. Franco also catered several meals for our family and friends, including the wedding feast. Barbara even helped us find a local masseuse to come to the villa to pamper everyone during the week. We had hoped to purchase some property near by, but, in Italian style, that didn't work out....but...all I can say is LOVE, LOVE, LOVE. We were lucky enough to be in the area in September 2009 to have coffee with Barbara and visit the villa for a couple of hours. It recharges the spirit and is truly the most splendid place on earth!!

I spent one week at Torre del Tartufo and was amazed! Franco and Paola were fabulous and the classes were amazing - intense for me who rarely cooks - but wonderful. The beautiful pictures on the website cannot even begin to describe being there! Accommodations were fantastic, beds, bathrooms, pool, views from anywhere on the property.... I could go on and on. Remote as a true treasure is! Highly recommend every minute and experience you could have there! The only problem.... way too much exceptional food and drink! ;-)

Room Tip: Every room is exceptional for many reasons. I slept with windows open every night. My sister and I...
