Good view of the harbour and sun set from our room. It was up lots of steps so tired me out to get to the top. The room was extremely hot and had to shower in my night clothes to stay cool. The fan didn't really work. And like most cheap places the shower was crap and it was a toilet without a flush. We paid 175,000 and on the 2nd night downgraded to 130,000 as there was no difference between rooms. The staff are quite slow with orders. I remember I ordered breakfast to have finished it before my drink actually came. If you asked for towels/ loo roll, info on tours they seemed to look at you with blank faces haha.

After a seriously long journey we came to Gardenia because of the Lonely Planet which said it was a good place to stay. Well its not - its bloody awful. It may have been good 5 years ago but now it is tired and run down. The wood in the huts is crumbeling away. The bathroom is awful, no seat on the loo, the shower just drips, the ceiling is full of mould - i could go on and on. Its one bit sweat box - the fan is useless - not a ceiling fan but one on the table which doesnt even move.
The food - is ok.

Off now to find somewhere else to stay. We are charged 150,000 for a double room.

The cheapest in town but far from the cleanest. Our room didn't even have a toilet set. The noise from the street was very loud with cars and trucks. Mouldy, damp rooms with very little class, hard mattress and no sheets. Bathroom did smell, breakfast was one stale bread roll and then I was pointed to a plastic tub stuffed with sweating scrambled eggs that looked like spew. It's not somewhere where u want to hang out. And not to forget the 200 or so steps to get to your room as they are steep! Staff were fairly helpful and the potion sizes from the restaurant were massive but the food is not really that good. Plenty of places to eat on the street that are much better. Only stay 1-2 nights but they should really upgrade the rooms with the price they charge for them.

Room Tip: Try and get a room that is either number 25-27 which is closer to the entrance.

i was here 8-9years ago,and it was one of the better places, for a resonable price, less rats than the other places and the food was good...
the place i stayed in this time is slowly rotting away, the mattress had lost its strength, but it was cheap and i just walked into it.
free breakfast,coffee and pancake...ok....cost 130,000
after the dive trip,i went to a place i bargained down to 150,000 called bagus bagus hotel....great....will stay there from now on....but its a 15 walk from town, not central like the gardenia...

Just Stayed there. It is on the small hill so if you have heavy bags be careful!!! The room we stayed was on the top of the hill.( By the way the view was really nice). It was clean but with very basic bathroom.Walls are actually made of bamboo.I guess staff were OK.We didn't talk to them much.Restaurant is really really slow.We were on the people there and waited about 20 min for two fried rice.It is OK for one or two days.

Room Tip: New rooms have better view.

We booked a Komodo trip through Gardenia which went great. We had two nights free after the trip before our flight so we booked in to stay. The price was very cheap and the room reflected that. It is basic but this place is really just a pit stop for people going on tours to Komodo etc.

The restaurant service was very hit and miss. Some of the staff bordered on rude and didn't want to help. The food itself was pretty good. The waitress told us the (cheaper) fish dishes on the menu weren't available but the fish options on the specials menu was available... at over double the cost and it was the same fish but just cooked differently. Hmm. Anyway the tuna hotplate was very nice.

Bottom line is: Don't come if you want anything near luxury or to be treated nicely. This is a basic cheap backpacker stop for a night or two. If you come with that expectation you probably won't be disappointed.

This place has some poor rooms and some excellent ones - cheapest are poor near the restaurant and noisy and made of bamboo with associated insects! pay about $3 more a night pp to have one of their best bungalows with windows and made of concrete with lovely balcony and stunning views of the harbour without being obscured. Also have wonderful sunset views direct from your balcony aswell as a good quiet sleep. showers are cold water and rooms are basic with mosquito nets. For about $17 a night, based on single occupancy, with breakfast, in high season, this is a stunning place. I found staff overworked but helpful and quite friendly. food here was also excellent and worth having as a break from indonesian food after being on the road sometime. Try the sizzling fresh prawns with rice or chips and also fresh mango juice - huge fresh flavoured portions all for about $5. Again great views whilst eating on the terrace area outside, and you could watch the large pelni ships dock and unload at the harbour not far away.
Theres also a night market along the sea front but many places rip off foreigners here so beware if eating here - the local warungs are great though (but not for fresh bbq fish)
