“Not as described in LP!!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2012

I have been staying in Maumere for a few days and based on the advice of the LP Guide on Flores, I have chosen this hotel, to reside in.
Well, the rooms that were once decent, /perhaps some 20 years ago/ have become very neglected, run down. Nobody touched anything here for the past 15 years, that is for sure. As everywhere here, maintenance is non-existent, the walls bear the marks of activities of tenants of decades past, there is no wash basin, everything leaks, crumbles, creaks. There are no windows opening to the outside, just fixed glass, when the night comes, no ventilation to air out the heat, smells. And several young, strong, healthy male locals sit around in the front lobby all day, playing cards, working their mobiles... doing nothing.
The receptionist, a handicapped local man, was very decent, helpful, spoke good English, though. Left soon, as I could.

Room Tip: Find some other place!

The ever inaccurate Lonely Planet guide recommended this dive to myself and my girlfriend. It's a grotty, mosquito-ridden, tired old hotel. We had a ground floor room, and the bed was spectacularly uncomfortable; it felt like a set of uneven springs covered with a thin, moldy sheet. Overpriced at any price, this travesty cost 150,000 rupiah per night at the time we stayed there (november 2011). Bathroom was sorely in need of a good scrubbing. The room was hot compared to the lobby outside, with one anemic standing fan inadequately blowing warm air around. Despite the swarm of mosquitoes present, there was no mosquito net.

Staff were fine, but there was one particularly annoying individual ensconced in the placee: the resident tour guide, a moustachioed gentleman named "Hironymous". He presented his photo albums to us on the first day we arrived, and tried to sell us his overpriced services as a tour guide on a six day tour of Flores. Seemingly incapable of understanding that we didn't want a six day tour as we planned to see the island at our own pace over two weeks or more, he hovered around us whenever we dared to leave our room, rattling on as if we had already agreed to go with him, and interrupting our private conversations and our meals most rudely and repeatedly. My girlfriend dared to make a telephone call to the local tourist office at one point, and was interrogated by Hironymous as to whom she was calling and why, like a criminal child.

I for one can empathise with any individual who is desperate for work... but there are limits.

Our advice? Avoid both the place and the tour guide like the plague. There are better hotels in Maumere, and cheaper, friendlier tour guides dotted all around Flores.

Room Tip: If you must stay here, don't choose a fan room; our fan was useless.

Although the Gardena doesn't have a very good reputation, we decided to stay there one night on the way back to Bali. They gave us a family room which appeared new, had two beds in two rooms with a see thru wall. It was about half way up the hill so not such a long hike.
Breakfast was practically non-existent but the staff were friendly and the room made up for the lack of a good breakfast. Suggest people ask for the family room which of course is more expensive than the budget rooms but well worth the extra! Of course the mosque is nearby so not exactly quiet.

Room Tip: Check out the family rooms.

The rooms are run down and not that clean. If you do stay here, see a bunch of rooms as some are better than others. Check to make sure the shower works. The first room we stayed in only had a trickle of water coming from the shower head. The next room had no toilet seat and the fan didn't work. The third room was better (except there was a terrible sewage smell in the bathroom). The worst part about this place is the price. I don't mind staying in a run down hotel if it is priced accordingly - but this hotel is outrageously overpriced. The staff were OK - but not very friendly or helpful. As other people have noted, the view is pretty nice from these bugalows, but that's the only redeeming quality. Maybe if they cut the price in half it would be an OK option.

This Hotel is recommended in Lonley Planet as well as in the Dumont traveller guide.
We arrived in Flores without pre booking like the others but we thought you can trust the traveller guide. Sounds good in the Dumont book so we went there to check out the rooms.
We didn't feel very welcomed at the reception and the rooms are really shabby. The bathroom doesn't look like a bathroom I'm sure every bathroom somewhere in a barn in Europe looks nicer.
The toilet doesnt have a toilet seat and the indonesian mandi is just a blue butt.
So first we decided to check the other hotels in the city. But i can tell you there is no better hotel like the Gardena. All homestays and guesthouses there are dirty and not worth the money. Gardena offered us the best price (but still not worth it) and the view was outstanding so we stayed there for 3 nights.
No sheets and towels provided.
Breakfast is just like a snack..

Most important point: dont expect balinese or lombok homestay standard! Flores offer you less...

recommended restaurants:
The corner ( just a few metres away from gardena ( good western style food, free wifi , nice and clean, nice toilet!! ;) )
Made in Italy ( good location, friendly and service trained staff, good pasta and pizza, feels like being in very expensive restaurant. Prices are a little bit higher than indonesian standard. main dishes for about 60 000 Rupiah.
The lounge ( good for chilling )

We arrived in Labuanbajo in the evening with no reservation and we found a bungalow/room in this hotel. We stayed here for two nights, before and after our trip to Komodo NP.
The first night we had a family room, it was composed of two small rooms, each with a queen bed with mosquito nets. There was an electric fan in each room, but in the night it wasn't hot, so we didn't used them. They do not provide sheets, this is quite unusual...
The toilet was almost terrible, especially because of the bad smell. No hot water and a non-flush toilet, but you had a water tank. Everything was very stained and not well kept.
On our second night, we had a triple room and this was less nice than the family room. We saw geckos in our previous hotel rooms, but here we saw one that was giant, probably not a geco, but... what else?? This room was not very clean, with big holes in the wooden walls, anyway the bathroom was less smelly...
Breakfast is really poor, just a small piece of something that could be sweet bread and coffe/tee.
On the other hand, people at the reception are kind and helpful, they also kept our luggage for 2 nights, while we were in Komodo.
Overall it is a basic hotel, with an impressive view on Labuanbajo, but extremely noisy in the morning (prayers, boats leaving the port, birds ecc ecc).
I'd say a standard accomodation for Flores, but they should improve it.

I arrived in Labuan Bajo with no previous reservation. All hotels mentioned in Lonely Planet mid-range were full so in the end I ended up at the Gardena which was the first one I saw coming out of the harbour. True it is a back-packers hotel. They told me they had a room available but it was 70 metres further up the hill. As I was desperate I said OK. We started walking up the very well-paved staircase and came to a clean basic room with mosquito net and with very basic but functional bathroom, and a small terrace. But the saving grace of this hotel is its views from up-top. Absolutely stunning unimpaired views of the harbours of Labuan Bajo to the extent that I would not go any where else at sunset or sunrise and couldn't wait for those hours to arrive - one f the highlights of my trip. Room 111 has the best view as it is on the corner. I was also told by friends that the food was very good.
