“Ok for 1 night but no longer”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2014

We stayed 4 nights in our tent here as a base to explore Nelson and surrounding areas. The hosts are lovely and welcoming, the facilities are clean, newly painted and well maintained.

BUT, things to note:
1) The holiday park is in the middle of a suburban area and the tent site we had (4) backs onto houses who played loud music.

2) The site was also not a dedicated tent site but designed for motorhomes & campervans so gravel mixed with grass. It was very hard to get our tent pegs into the ground in several places.

3) the holiday park is on the direct flight path of Nelson airport and while it's only smaller planes and not as busy as Auckland, Wellington or Heathrow, they are not the best way to wake up when camping.

4) there is an unsupervised ie no security, back entrance to the holiday park from Waverley St which makes it very easy for anyone to enter without the office staff knowing. We ensured we padlocked our tent zips.

5) the road outside the holiday park is State Highway 6 - the main road into Nelson and main route of the logging trucks from the surrounding forests. Traffic noise was continuous day and night.

We would not stay here again instead preferring to find something close to the beach and less noisy.

The park was a bit unusual due it's emphasis on accommodation rather than camping. The initial impression driving in, is of a build up 70ies style Motel sadly, but inside the units and facilities were fabulous.

Our unit was very clean, recently renovated and had great beds! The shower/toilet facilities were right around the corner. Extremely clean, well looked after. We even had hand sanitizer and toilet seat cleaner available everywhere.

The showers in the women's block were rather small, even my 8 year old tiny girl commented on them being a bit of a squeeze. Not recommended for people needing space.

We stayed for 2 nights. Would stay again, as we really enjoyed being there. We had booked a kitchen unit for $105 with 2 separate bedrooms and a lounge area with TV.

We were booked into a standard cabin for 2 nights, it was a quiet time of the year and miserable weather and we were asked if we would like to be upgraded. There was no hesitation from us!!!
The hosts were very accommodating in letting us stay later in the morning to watch the America's Cup yachting, which at that stage was very favourable to NZ.
The unit was very clean, spacious and comfortable. Very close to the town centre, a small compact site.

We stayed in a Self Contained Unit - Studio which was comfortable, but why do these type of places fit small screen TVs when you can purchase a 32inch at a low cost now.The unit was clean & was great to have a small bottle of milk given to us instead of having the longlasting milk seating in the fridge.

All top 10s we have stayed at have been great but this one is smaller and more personal making it very close to all amenities..We had a powered site as towing a caravan. Great views of the hills behind us. Fantastic facilities - very clean and all extras supplied - free wi-fi, filtered water, hand and toilet steriliser, lots of hooks in showers etc. 5 minutes easy walk to town and only 13km to nelson - an easy bike ride on great cycle tracks. Within an hour of Takaka hills, Mapua, Golden bay. Able tasman etc. The Managers Gary and Helen Borcovsky were super helpful and friendly. When we come back to nelson this is the place we will stay as can't fault it. I don't know where Chloe N. stayed but certainly can't have been here! Thanks again Helen and Gary - this place is a credit to you and your caretaker is super efficient and helpful as well.

We stayed in most of the Top 10 holiday parks on the south island and this was by far the worst and one of the most expensive. There were no baby change facilities or bath, the kitchen was poorly equipped un-inviting and closed at 9, you have to pay for the BBQ. The internet was not IAC like most of the other parks so our internet subscription was useless. It was not leafy and green either, mostly concrete.
The only positives were that the staff were friendly enough and it was quite quiet.

Having just returned from beautiful New Zealand I would like to share my experience at Richmond Nelson Top 10. My husband and I stayed at Top 10 Parks all over the South Island and with the exception of one Park, could not fault any. We were in a rather large Motorhome so needed space to accomodate it. We were only going to stay one night at Richmond but stayed two. The park itself is exceptionally clean and well appointed, with really plenty of space on each site. The Motel accommodation is very comfortable and adequate. Access to and from the Park is very easy even with a large vehicle. Gary and Helen we did not meet but Carol and her partner are very special people. Extremely helpful and friendly making us Aussies feel very welcome indeed. I was quite ill on arrival and Carol went above the call of duty to help us. So much so she made available a unit for me and helped with directions etc., for medical help. I did improve so we stayed and were able to enjoy some of the sights of the surrounding areas. Carol suggested places to go to make my time there very pleasant. She is such a gem and has a wonderful sense of humour and a most infectious laugh. Will definetely stay again and would recommend to all. Two oldies from Aussie. Love the Rugby.
