“Lovely accommodation and welcoming hosts.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2011

The accommodation was very tasteful and clean with homely touches. The vegetarian breakfast was gorgeous . Very peaceful area.

It was great to get back to the peace and quiet after exhausting days at Centre parks.

Stayed here for a couple of nights whilst working in the local area.
It's a cosy little B & B run by a lovely couple, Mike & Shiona, who can't do enough for you.
There are 3 rooms, the largest has an en-suite, the other 2 have a large shared bathroom; this is fine as I hardly ever saw my next door neighbours.
The rooms are beautifully laid out and the huge bed was so comfortable. Loads of nice touches in the room such as jars of coffee and chocolate (not packets), loads of towels, mints in a bowl etc. The room was immaculately clean.
The area itself is lovely and quiet with a fabulous restaurant around the corner. As it's in the middle of the countryside there are loads of areas for walks; Mike is able to provide information on good walking routes (and you might be lucky to get a map to borrow).
The prices of the rooms are very reasonable, far less than staying in Penrith.
A lovely stay, will come again.

I cycled with a friend from Lands End to John O'groats in the summer and this B&B was wellplaced on route for resting tired legs. Mike and Shiona were incredibly welcoming and extremely tolerant of overambitious cyclists (we were a little wetter and later than we were intending). The B&B offered all you would need for such a trip; a bed, a hearty breakfast and a garage to secure the bikes. And all for a very reasonable sum. Fantastic value.

I've stayed with Mike and Shiona regularly for most of this year. Unfortunately I'm not working in the area any more and will really miss staying with them.

A great place to stay whether your on holiday in the Lakes, passing by or working in the local.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 23, 2009

Without boring you with the background, my 19 year old son and I found ourselves stranded in a nearby village, just off the A66, our car having broken down, in the middle of the heaviest snowfall for more than 10 years !!!!
Receiving a plaintive call at 10 o'clock at night from the landlady of the Bridge End Inn at Kirkby Thore, Mike and Shiona at Shepherds Croft had no hesitation in offering a twin room we could bed down in.
When we arrived, having been given a lift by the Bridge End Inn's landlord through the snow in his 4 wheel drive, Mike welcomed us with the news that we would have a double EACH as their regular guest was using the twin room, and at no extra cost.
We collapsed into our luxurious beds amazed by our good fortune.
The full English breakfast in the morning was brilliant, just what we needed to set us up for our long day ahead.
With mobiles on their last dregs of power Shiona once more jumped to our aid with a charger from their Sat Nav that fit my Blackberry.
Mike had offered to give us a lift back down to the local garage but with a further 2-4 inches of snow having fallen we could not expect him to get himself stranded at the bottom of the hill back into the village.
Just as we were about to set off to walk the 2 miles back to the garage the guys from there offered to come and collect us.
To cap it all off Mike and Shiona agreed we could send them a cheque as we did not have enough cash to pay for the rooms. They admitted they expected this when heard of our predicament and accepted the booking the previous night.
The generosity we experienced from all parties in our time off need was fantastic, not least from Mike and Shiona.
We were only at Shepherds Croft very briefly but what we saw and experienced was outstanding.

I have stayed at Shepherd's Croft five or six times now on business and always stay there when woring in the Penrith area.
Breakfast is superb and based on the largest sausage you're likely to see!
Shiona and Mike are always welcoming, always attentive to detail and it's a pleasure to return. Highly recommended.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
We are located in the beautiful Eden Valley - well situated for exploring the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, Northern Pennines, Hadrian's Wall and Southern Scotland. There's lots of good walking and cycling nearby. As we are 1 mile from the A66 and only 10 minutes from the M6 we are an ideal place to stopover if you are travelling to or from Scotland. Shiona & Mike converted Shepherds Croft from being a "Bank Byre" (a type of barn) into a large house in 1989, doing most of the work themselves. The house is unusual in that there are two ground floor levels - because the bank into which the barn was built slopes, so that the rear garden and patio are higher than the cobbled frontage. The layout of the house is ideally suited to B&B accommodation - all the letting rooms are on the same floor and there is a separate residents lounge/ dining room. The house is very warm. The walls are 2 foot thick! And all rooms have individually adjustable central heating radiators. We are only 50 yds from the village pub/restaurant, The Black Swan. The residents lounge/dining room is large enough for you to relax in comfort. We have assembled a comprehensive collection of information on local tourist attractions, but we are always willing to help you plan your stay with some local advice. Mike was a member of the local mountain rescue team for over 30 years. There is a range of games for you to play and you are welcome to sit in the conservatory, go onto the patio or into the garden. You can also borrow a book from our collection. Breakfast is served at the time of your choice usually between 08.00 And 09.00. ... more   less
