“Beautiful weekend away”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2013 via mobile

The surrounds of this house are breathtaking. We stayed in the chalet which felt really homely. Despite being only a 60 second walk to the main house it was fully stocked with all you need for self sufficiency. It was out of this world to wake up and sit on the veranda looking into the lake for breakfast or book reading with ducks and swans frolicking.

Food top notch and matched wines on degustation menu worked a treat.

Just a few negatives, our afternoon tea came with no tea (just a teabag in our chalet) which for me took away a little from it. Few new staff being shown the ropes the weekend we stayed which lead to a few small mistakes (nothing huge but when you're paying top dollar you don't expect it ).

In short this is a high end, perfect weekend of unwinding in the heart of the mornington peninsula that I would strongly recommend to a friend as long as their wallet stretches to it..

I have done my homework on this place so I sort of know what to expect before I arrive...
Food and customer service were fine, the room was also fine (little dusty) and air conditioning is controlled outside the room, and it was too loud when it was on, so we had to turn it off so when we could get to sleep. There was no "Do Not Disturb" sign to use, so housekeeping gave us a big fright when she knocked on the door ten times over 20 seconds whilst we were trying to get dressed to open the door for her, and all she wanted was to give us 2 bottles of water! Why couldn't them be placed in our room before we arrived and settled in the room beforehand??
It was overall over-priced for what you get, the food was as great as anywhere else, nothing too special about it. We stayed in the room in the spa retreat area, the clients and staff weren't noisy, but the MUSIC!!! From 8am-10pm all day! Though the music was meant to be relaxing, it certainly wasn't relaxing when it was unnecessarily loud and has to start from 8am to wake you up, I went out of my room to look, there were no treatment going on at the time, so I suppose the spa staff are instructed to turn the loud music on during the entire opening hours of the spa everyday!

Room Tip: Don't stay in the Garden Lake view room.

We booked a high tea with Opera last Sunday at Woodman Estate for a birthday celebration for 20 people.
We were seated at a single table in a separate room and served a glass of champagne on arrival. The food arrived promptly and all our special requests were catered for.
The quality, variety and quantity of food was excellent and exceeded our expectations.
Hot and cold drinks were available throughout the tea and we ended the afternoon with scones and jam with tea and coffee.

The service was excellent both before the event when we were booking and making enquiries and on the day.
We booked this date as they have a duo singing opera once a month during the tea. While not being opera buffs the singing was great and mixed nicely during the afternoon we spent at Woodman Estate.
In all we spent over 3 hours at the estate and everyone really enjoyed the day.

The tea is highly recommended especially with the opera duo.

On arriving at the property it seemed very lovely and set out nicely. We had dinner in the Bistro which was really nice and very pleasant. We were staying in the spa suite and the room was magnificent, beautiful large bathroom and lovely bedroom in a Victorian theme. Breakfast the following morning was a little light on, not much to choose from, and the cooked options where very slow. You would have thought there would have been a bigger fruit platter (it was only large enough for 3 people and it was there for the entire restaurant) A few home baked muffins and some muesli cereal and toast. Would have expected pastries, cheeses, cold cut meats, croissants etc. The service was pleasant but not very refined. (Waiter had buttons undone and his stomach protruding through his shirt) First breakfast we tried the Estate Special (Spanish Eggs) We love this dish at cafes and make it ourselves at home. It wasn't made from slow cooked capsicum and tomatoes like you would expect but the raw ingredients where placed in the bowl and baked. This left a very watery tomato capsicum and egg dish which we didn't finish. Dinner on the Saturday night was in their Fine Dining restaurant. The degustation meal was fabulous enjoyed every part of it, but the wine was a huge let down. We paid for the "matched wines" with every course, but no one will ever know how they were matched. The waitress came up with each glass announcing the variety and walking away! No bottle showing, no region, no wine maker, no climate it was grown in. After the 3rd glass we asked for the bottle. It was a clean skin labelled with Woodman Estate, and nothing about the wine at all. Not even tasting notes. She told us they get to taste them but don't know anything about them or where they come from. When you pay $100 a couple for matched wines, that's definitely not good. You don't pay for a glass of wine, you pay for the experience and would like to be "romanced" in the history of where your glass has come from. Back to the room, in the spa house the music was playing loudly and we phoned reception to have it turned down. The lady was quite rude to my husband and followed it up by slamming the doors on her way out. The bed had lovely linen but our backs in the morning were really sore. That's surprising being we never normally have that issue. I checked the date of the property and the beds were probably nearing 8 years so it may be due for a mattress change. They were very creaky.

In the morning on the way back to breakfast we meandered through some lovely gardens and lawns. The pathway that led to the house unfortunately took you to the rubbish bins and rubble, again could be such a better experience with some thought about their guests. We tried to get into the house via the lake door (where the spa house path finished) and saw staff walking past ignoring us. So we walked around the entire property to the front door. Again, not a huge deal, but it just didn't have that "you are our guest" feeling.

Breakfast the following morning we tried the traditional E&B breakfast which was much better. But the music started to really grate on me. It had been the same CD from Friday night dinner, Sat breakfast, Sat Dinner and now Sunday Breakfast! And it was a Tina Arena style so big voices over and over and over again….. Definitely needed an update or shuffle player!

On checking out we weren't asked about our stay and the payment was made. This place is structurally beautiful, which a little refinement, replacement, and cleanup it could make a beautiful stay. If I had been paying $500 for the weekend, I would have not complained, but to layout $1500 it wasn't really worth the money.

Dear Guest,

We are sorry to hear that some aspects of your stay did not meet your expectations. We understand the importance of value and hear your comments. It is not often that we receive negative feedback, but when we do we take it seriously. If you would like to provide contact details directly to me, I am happy to discuss.

More broadly, we have organised a front of house staff training session to refresh our team about some of the important operational aspects regarding our estate. This is in addition to the regular coaching and discussion that takes place in our work place amongst our team.

What a lovely place to stay. Beautiful surrounding countryside and nothing more relaxing than sitting next to the lake with a glass of wine or if you feel more energetic take the boat out and have a row on the lake. What can you say about the food? I don't think have a eaten food this good for a long time. The standards set are high and this is reflected on the service you receive.

Using an accommodation voucher, I took my sister here for her birthday and we found it to be very charming, with more than a hint of luxury, The house and grounds are beautiful and the staff were wonderful, from greeting me by name at the door, to giving excellent service at dinner and in all other areas. Our food was some of the best we have had - innovative with perfectly cooked lamb and salmon and a lovely bottle of wine provided as part of the package. Continental breakfast was elegant and wonderfully helped by fresh squeezed juices, home made muffins, and other lovely options. We found it a joyful start to our food and beverage tour of the region - just about perfect.

Room Tip: Ours was lovely looking over the fields - but they all had lovely aspects. A little bit more size wo...

The Manor House looks like a very old and long established country manor but is a relatively new converted very large family home on a grand scale and set in beautiful grounds. The even newer Spa House contains accommodation and the on-site spa. All facilities are of a very high standard, well maintained and very comfortable. Our dinner was a multi course set meal with wines. The food was exceptionally good - varied and interesting and the wines pleasant but not outstanding. Small serves were appreciated with the number of courses and each was a treat.
Breakfast service was extremely slow, but it was supposed to be a relaxing time, so perhaps this should have been expected. Breakfast was good quality if a little pedestrian and not quite living up to the beat-up ("it will set you up for the whole day...").
For the price, there were a couple of rough edges, a few slips in meal service and a couple of neglected services (parts of the package that were not delivered) but overall it was a thoroughly enjoyable (but expensive) weekend.
Our Garmin GPS could not find the road number but Google Maps found the property and the nearest cross roads worked in the GPS, eventually.

Room Tip: Spa House and lakeside chalets are away from the main house if there is a group of party goers in re...
