My jaw dropped as, on a trip to Stratford to the RSC, we arrived to see the crowded car park and, through the window, people jammed into the bar. I shouldn't have worried. After we had parked in a sidestreet across the road we shoved through the birthday party crowd into the restaurant to a warm welcome and a glass of good wine. The menu had familiar British dishes, and there were adventurous specials chalked on the blackboard. We were served promptly and with engagement, even with the stress of the birthday party, which turned out only to have the effect on our visit of providing a happy background hubub. The clientele was varied - multi-generational family groups, young couples, a grey-power couple on their first internet date (I eavesdropped on the next table), and the only two gays in the village (Stratford theatre people?), who held court as villagers crowded round to hear the gossip. Like us they were all happy and enjoying their evening. And last of all, the bill - having eaten earlier that week in a similar pub in Cambridge that emptied my wallet I appreciated the great value. Highly recommended.
