“One of the world's greatest boutique lodges”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2009

We were hesitant to make reservations at La Cocotera because it was a new resort, limited reviews and not sure what an Eco centered resort really meant. We received an awesome education.

Let me start by saying this might have been the most well designed facility we have ever stayed at. We have stayed at many outstanding facilities around the world, and the only one that even comes close was the Finch Hattons Camp in Tsavo West National Park, Kenya. The warmth of the service at La Cocotera sets it a notch above the Finch Hatton Camp.

Where to start? So many wonderful things to talk about. The rooms are incredible. Some deep engineering makes the rooms so climate comfortable- without having to turn on the air-conditioning. I don’t care for air-conditioning but always use it. At La Cocotera the rooms have huge double french doors that capture the ocean breeze. This keeps the room temperature perfect. Some may call this a Eco-friendly design, I simply think it is better than air-conditioning design that just happens to not require air-conditioning. Note the rooms all have modern new air-conditioners installed.

Most new resorts in Central America use porcelain tile flooring and bathrooms. At La Cocotera limestone is used throughout. It gives a very warm and comfortable feeling. Never hot, never cold. What a choice. The shower has a unique design that the water drains away from the center- so the shower floor appears flat. It is really nice to take a shower- and the overhead shower head has great pressure. We were concerned about running out of hot water because of the solar heaters. Early morning, late at night- all the hot water one could ever use.

Outside of the rooms are chase lounges. So incredibly comfortable, I thought I might want to sleep outside. Inside the bed, linens and pillows are simply perfect. Note that every room has a flat screen tv, but there are no TV stations. One must watch DVDs. I never missed TV.

The food is wonderful. The chef is a native Salvadorian who trained at culinary school for three years. Local items are the mainstay- but freshness of ingredients balanced with his passion for cooking are the cornerstone of the meals.

The ocean is simply magnificent. Very private- yet the feeling of safety because the beach is wide open. The resort offers life belts, boogie boards and other items. These are easy to get- no waiting in line like many resorts. Same with fresh towels. The pool is wonderful. Very private and special. Two things stand out. One, the pool was designed in a manner that allowed two mature palms trees to remain in the center of the pool, quite an accomplishment. Next- unlike 90% of the resorts in tropical climates- enough chairs for every guest at the pool. No competing with people getting up at 5am placing towels on chairs to reserve them. Also want to mention at the beach front are uniquely designed cabanas where chairs and hammocks are. The unique design somehow allows a great view of the ocean and allows the breeze in, yet keeps the hot sun out. A great place to lie on a hammock and read a book.

I could go on and on. I travel for work many days of the year and I can easily pick out flaws in a hotel/ resort. I could not find one at La Cocotera. This magical place was designed for the experience, not for maximum profit. And it shows in every aspect.

A few notes- the last 10km to La Cocotera is extremely remote on a bumpy rode. We drove, but next time we will take advantage of the free car service from the airport. No need whatsoever for a vehicle at La Cocotera. I recommend making reservations early. We could not stay as long as we wanted because we made late reservations. The resort is small and intimate- so availability can be limited.

I love this place set amidst "hundreds of coconut trees." Its locations and environmental philosophy make this place stunningly beautiful. The vibe is undescribable, it is so relaxing sitting on a tranquil beach. The make great authentic good served to the guest and the outdoors in unmatched any other place on earth. The hotel is clean and up kept, with clean/green modern amenities.
