“Peaceful and tranquil”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2013

The beach of Calahonda starts just north of the MacDonalds Dona Lola complex and ends just after the MacDonalds Leila Playa resort which is a distance of about 3 Kilometers. At the southern end the administration changes from the Adjunct of Marbella to the adjunct of Mijas. The beach is a public beach but the municipality allows concessions to provide bars and churringitos and hammocks and parasols for hire. There are waste bins at intervals along the beach, also a number of showers, a number of public conveniences and recently interpretative material on the flora and fauna has been installed. In the summer there is a daily litter pick and waste bin rubbish collection. Once a week there is a sand flattening exercise, by a tractor.
Sea erosion is a problem and there are various points at which the sea is threatening the beachside property walls. Sea urchins are a problem for barefoot walkers on the beach.
From the southern end the beach is about 60 metres wide and you first reach the La Luna bar which can be accessed by car from the N340 down a roadway just after the Los Cipresses Commercial Centre which doubles as a river course in heavy rain. La Luna offers some watersports and hammocks and parasols. The sand is generally fine and the beach is shallow. Bathing is generally safe and the municipality provides Lifeguards in Peak season.
After the Leila Playa resort the next main feature is Royal Beach (about 0.5 Kilometers) , approached down a road from the N340 junction alongside MacDonalds. There is a small Car Park near the churringito but they have provided a dirt car park 50 yards nearer the motorway. They have provided an impressive ramp down to the beach which is stocked with hammocks and parasols. Watersports are available. The beach here is about 40 metres wide with fine sand. Bathing is into a shallow sea.
After Royal Beach the beach narrows slightly and is dominated by a residential complex that ends with a tower block with a terrace that juts out to the sea. Fronting the complex is El Capricho, a churringito approached down a road from the N340. There is a small Car Park near the churringito which provides hammocks and parasols. Limited watersports are available. The beach here is about 40 metres wide with fine sand. Bathing is into a shallow sea.
Once past the headland created by the terrace, the MacDonalds Dona Lola complex comes into sight. The beach is generally flat with a shallow sea. Playas de Calahonda ends at the Dona Lola resort.
Calahonda is a peaceful and trouble free area. The vast majority of residents and business proprietors are English speaking, so communication is not a worry.

“Worst beach in the area”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

Nothing to do there, not much sand. Not a great choice of bars/restaurants. Go to Cabopino or Elviria, just 5 minutes down the road and much much nicer in all ways.

“Lovely spot and great beach bar”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2013

Playa de Calahonda is a beautiful secluded spot, great to just chill and enjoy the Mediterranean. A must is to visit the Royal Beach Bar, the seafood is amazing and the staff are great. Easy to get to by bus from Marbella if you fancy a trip out

“Not bad but coarser sand”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2013

Walked along this beach from Doña Lola Macdonalds resort. It was ok but some areas were like a building site, work being done near the apartments leading down to the sea and some of the rubbish lying around. It was January so it may be cleaner during the summer months. We could have walked all the way to the Cadopina harbour/beach which has nicer sand but as it was getting dark we didn't go that far. It would have taken about two hours to walk there and back, probably be ok in the summer months when lighter, then you could drink in the nice bars and walk back.
