“User-friendly, relaxing, no complaints”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2012

First time at this hotel, here for a three day conference. Longer journey than expected from the airport (traffic accident), around 30 minutes via Lisbon centre. First impressions: efficient check in and friendly staff though, unusually, room charges payable in advance. Large apartment/room with twin bedded room, reasonably sized bathroom (tub/WC/basin/bidet/shower over bath) and sitting room (sofa-bed, two armchairs, dining table + 4 chairs) and kitchen area (fridge/m'wave/hob/oven). Both the bedroom and sitting room provided access to a good sized furnished balcony overlooking the exterior pool and the river meeting the ocean beyond. Pretty quiet at night even with balcony door wide open. Very convenient having wifi included in rate throughout the hotel with no password required. Service in the bar was quick, menu nothing special but acceptable and reasonably priced. Buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner service for our group - it was OK - plenty of salad options and Setúbal house wine. Restaurant staff very responsive to requests for re-fills, friendly and helpful. Dessert options tempting and delicious as always in Portugal. Coffee invariably good from giant Nespresso machines. Gym didn't tempt but indoor pool did. Late check-out was much appreciated given the alternative of the dreadful Terminal 2 at Lisbon airport.

Hotel on top of a hill, really calm site. Spacy studio with separate bedroom, complete kitchen incl. wash-maschine, 2x TV, lot of wardrobe. WLAN (free) router directly in the room. Modern, attractive bathroom, bathrope, dryer, soaps etc. Huge balcony with nice sunlounger/seats. Phantastic view onto the river Tejo. Very good breakfast. High quality and wide selection of the fitness equipment. (Steam) sauna nice, free pool/jakuzzi. Good parking. Very, very friendly and helpful ladies at the reception! Airport shuttle (ca. 23 Euro), at the weekend free shuttle from/to town centre.

Furniture/wood of doors a little flawed. Breakfast could have a little more variety. Hotel far from urban living, small shops can be found and coffee shops, but hard to find restaurant etc. (a little hint: bus station 300m nearby, bus 011 to "Marques De Pombal").

Very good rooms, in- and outdoor swimming pool and gym. Rather far from the city (15km). In weekends and vacation periods free transfer possible to the City (10.00 and back 16.30). Next time we would prefer for a City trip a hotel in the centre. If you have a car at your disposal this hotel is very good.

We had a two bedroom flat overlooking the pool and the river/sea. It was very spacious, adequately equipped (more glasses, please!) and very clean. The staff were obliging. The breakfast was fine, although my wife longed for a reappearance of the Sunday special boiled eggs. We did not try the restaurant, but the bar snacks were tasty, and fairly priced. The room had reliable wired internet access, and the wifi in reception was also good.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the local chorus of howling dogs or the random cockerel. These may be an issue for light sleepers.

Being after the main season, the hotel shuttle to Lisbon City was only running at weekends. We had hired a car for the week and I'm glad we did. The drive from the airport is a bit of a challenge! We found that we could park quite easily in Alges, on the river front tram route (5-10 minutes away), and you can buy Carris day tickets for the trams, buses and metro from a little shop in the bus station there (€5 for 24 hours plus €0.50 for the smart card). We saw the Vimeca number 11 bus a couple of times. This passes near the hotel and goes to Lisbon, but you end up at a peripheral bus station (Marques de Pombal).

We dined in different establishments in Lisbon and Cascais. Undoubtedly the best was the Restaurant Dom Pedro I in Cascais (see Tripadvisor listing). There's an underground car park under the Largo do Camões in Lisbon, which is handy for the Bairra Alto restaurant and Fado Bar area (if you like that sort of thing).

Highpoint of the week? The Electrico de Sintra. This runs for the public on Friday Saturday and Sunday, for a long-ish season.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2012

Well I feel like I am "swimming against the tide" as we say in America (after seeing the reviews on the right hand column of the page most four and five star ratings). First let me talk about the really good things about the hotel- then explain why I rated it a three star.

The good
1. Excellent and responsive staff- both at reception and in the restaurant.
2. Great food (in the restaurant) and very reasonable prices (for example an excellent fish entree with sides only 12 Euros)
3. Workout facility- compared to other European Hotels it is jam packed with equipment- albeit old and hard to figure out (meaning the weight machines) it is still very good when compared to what you find in non Marriott Hotels in Europe
4. Views are great- distant views of the harbor and cliffs across the harbor
5. Attractive pool setting
6. Large apartment with stove in kitchen sitting room with large balcony

So why not a five star or at least a four star?
1. Elevator out of order- so the hotel was down to one elevator- not counting the service elevator that I discovered to prevent interminable elevator weights
2. Non Existent air conditioning- there was a remote control Heating-Aircondition device in the room but it had no affect seemingly
3. Meeting rooms were stifling hot-We had to keep doors open
4. Hotel is starting to shows signs of wear and tear- (probably 15 years old- hard to judge) with cracker paint, metal doors scarred- the entire hotel is showing signs of lack of consistent maintenance- perhaps because of the economic problems?
5. No wifi in the room- and intermittent wifi in the sitting areas
6. Distance from the "historic parts of lisbon" the hotel is somewhat isolated on top of a hill.

I thought about this for a bit before deciding on a three star rating.

We chose this hotel after reading glowing reviews on Tripadvisor. Everything good that has been said is absolutely spot on.
I was in Portugal on business so we decided to make a long weekend of it and use the hotel as a base for a city break to Lisbon. Good choice! We took the free hotel shuttle bus on Sunday to the city centre and chose to stay in town past the 4.30 return bus. Returning to the hotel was no problem - only a 15 min (14€) taxi ride.
We ate at the hotel restaurant for each of our 3 nights and the menu, although limited for a longer stay, was fine. The quality of the food was very good indeed. If staying for longer, there is little choice local to the hotel so eating out would mean a trip down to Estoril, Cascais, Belem or Lisbon itself - hardly a massive issue! The breakfast buffet was OK but nothing special.
The hotel has a pleasant outside pool with plenty of sun loungers etc. There is also a gym, inside pool, sauna and tennis court.
The rooms are enormous - effectively one bedroom apartments with separate lounge. The balcony is large enough for a couple of sun loungers and a table and chairs.
All in all a very good hotel which deserves serious consideration when staying in the Lisbon area for business or pleasure.

Room Tip: Pay the little extra for the pool/river view.
