We visited the Restaurant at this pub based on the reviews here and their website which on the surface looked quite good. However, alarm bells should have rung as the website is still showing the a la carte menu from six months ago. Not exactly a huge job to keep it up to date. Anyway. we booked a table for 8.30pm. After a few minutes a very sheepish looking waiter brought the menu to us. There were about 5 starters and 5 main courses on the list. He told us that they had run out of 3 of the starters and one of the mains. That left a "potato soup" charged at £6 and a chicken dish at £8 for starters. The mains were steak and chips ( with a 30 minute wait if you ordered it!) braised steak, fish and chips ( priced at £14 - cheaper at Rick Steins retaurant!) and a vegetarain dish. And even this one they had run out of the cheese on the dish! The waiter was most apologetic and said it was because the chef was trying a new menu and also because the delivery lorry had broken down on the M4 from London. One of the missing starters was Cornish crab - so why was Cornish crab being delivered from London?? We asked if there were any specials but of course the answer was no. While we were pondering the ever decreasing menu we overheard another table saying they had been there for over an hour and had only had their starters. Another table came in and when they were told about the lack of courses available they walked out!
We were assured by the waiter that the chicken starter was very nice ( so I should think for £8) and as it was nearly 9pm by that stage and no other restaurants were likely to be open we ordered that. Within a couple of minutes a different waiter came up with our starter. I cannot describe on here what it looked like but if you have a dog you may understand! The dish consisted of only the small fillet you get on the back of a chicken breast and had obviously not been cooked fresh as it was seved to us so quickly. It was on a bed of dry rocket leaves with no dressing and had been thrown onto a small side plate with no care or attention. The food looked inedible and there was no way we were going to pay £8 each for it. So we walked away too.
They may have been busy and they may have had problems with delivery but any decent kitchen could have made a better effort particularly at the prices they were charging. They must have been aware of the shortage of ingredients. Could they not have gone to a local supplier for addional supplies? I've never walked out of a restaurant after ordering food and I hope I never have the need to do so again. If there was an option to rate this place zero on trip advisor I would do so!
