“The Gaol”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2012

Being a local of the area it was great to see this place open to the public. I have been a few times since the opening. Some parts of it aren't open to the public anymore such as the guards tower and the passage way to the court house, would be really good for tousists to see. The place is still great and worth the visit if your in Maitland You. An ex con or ex guard tour is a must especially at dark.

Thank you, it’s always great to receive feedback from a local!

While the watch towers would no doubt make a great addition to the public tours, it’s just too dangerous – there was no such thing as OH&S back when they built the steep and narrow staircase inside!

We hear about the ‘passage way’ between the court house and the gaol all the time but, unfortunately, it’s no more than a myth. Although we wish it was true unfortunately no-one has ever managed to find its location, it doesn’t exist on any plans and even our ex-wardens agree that it never existed.

A very scary place, interesting historical talks, but creepy, the history of the place is very sad.

“Will never return!!!!!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2012

I`m afraid my partner and I can`t write an actual review as we only got to see the outside of the prison.!!! We turned up there about 1.30pm today Saturday 24th of March and the receptionist said hello to my partner and then said hello to someone on the telephone and began a conversation with that person. We walked a few meters down the hall and looked at the artwork on display ,all the while waiting for the receptionist to get off the phone,we are reasonable people but you could tell by the conversation it wasn`t a hurried one nor likely one to be ended soon,so we walked away and we will not return!!! Customer service is apalling and if that lady worked for me I would have sacked her then and there!!!

“A place to reflect”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2012

A thought provoking, reflective visit to a site we have past many times over the years and wondered what was on the inside. The audio tour took 1.5 hours and visiting during the week ensured we were able to stop and reflect on the conditions and the effect on families. Would recommend a visit by families with teenage children as the impact of a visit would be more powerful than words.
