“Truly Moving”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2015

This cemetery displays 17,201 white marble headstones in the shape of Latin crosses or Stars of David in concentric rings around the memorial. These are the graves of Americans and Filipinos, who lost their lives during World War II, mostly in the Philippines and New Guinea. I found it sobering to look at this sea of white and realize the number of markers and the ravages of war.

Highlights of the memorial include freestanding walls that hold the names of 36,285 missing in action and four rooms containing 25 mosaic maps of battles in the Pacific, China, India and Burma. The maps are extremely well done and a historian's dream.

Staff meticulously cares for the 152 acres. The markers stand in well tended grass by nicely trimmed trees. The memorial rooms and walkways are immaculate. Even the restrooms for visitors are spotless.

I recommend a visit to this poignant, quiet place, where one can give thanks to those who made the supreme sacrifice in the fight against tyranny. Let them never be forgotten.

The Manila American Cemetery and Memorial is close to Makati,, one of the 16 cities that make up metro Manila. It can be easily reached by taxi.

“This is a must see. The history of WWII as well as a monument to bravery”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2015

This cemetery and monument is overseen by the American Battle Monuments Commission. It is pristine and awe-inspiring. Not only are the dead buried in a manicured lawn area with white marble headstones, but walls by branch of service list the dead, their unit, rank, and job. Both American and Filipino WWII soldiers are buried here. There are multiple murals depicting individual battles in the Pacific Theater with detailed information about troops, units, the actual battle, numbers of soldiers as well as an overall mural of the entire Pacific Theater and battles and one of the European Theater. I was overwhelmed and awed by this memorial. I could have spent many more hours just looking at the murals. Easy to find and an inexpensive taxi ride from old Manila. Took about 45 minutes each way. Stayed 45 min. and cost was approximately USD20 although we did use up our pesos and then added a tip as the driver waited for us.

“Honor and Valor”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2014

Easy 15-minute walk from SM Aura. The guard at the front gate will ask for an ID, then you will be asked to log your name. This site is open at 9am to 5pm everyday except Christmas and New Year. It's a good place to learn more about a chunk of history whether you are America, Filipino, Japanese, Chinese, etc.
it's a good place to validate, confirm, negate or question the history books and documentaries that abound. It's a good place to pay respect to those who gave their own lives so that we are here today enjoying what they fought for and died for before.
If you love to enjoy some peace and quiet amidst the crazy, noisy city, this is the best place to go. After soaking in your peace, atmosphere of honor and valor, a quick walk back to SM Aura will bring you back to reality.

“Peaceful respite within Manila”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2014

I know embarrassing little about WWII, but I found the American Cemetery and Memorial a worthwhile visit. The most striking aspect is that this green, peaceful, quiet memorial stands in stark contrast to the chaos of urban Manila. This site is worth an hour or two of perusing on a nice day....and could be easily followed up by some dining / shopping Market! Market! (walking distance).
