We arrived at El Fuerte from Copper Canyon train, at night, without booking anywhere. Walking around town came by this hotel: Hotel Real de Carapoa, Paseo de la Juventud #102, Centro Historico. Stayed 5 days for the same rate as the first hotel - no contest. This is a stylish and charming small hotel (6 rooms), a recently refurbished historic building, and looking like an architectural review magazine subject. It is ultra-quiet, being on a pedestrian passage, and built of stone. Situated just off the plaza (and still quiet!). Accommodation quality is high, cleanliness exemplary, and all facilities working well (Air con, hot water etc.). The management is friendly, efficient and professional (speak English). No bar/restaurant on site, but not needed. It's in the center of town. This would be my first choice to stay here any time.
