Description: We are a traditional, family-owned and operated 17th century village pub. We serve fresh food prepared from local ingredients, including game and foraged foods. We grow our own veg, herbs and fruit and make our own ice creams as well (try our damson ince cream with plums from the back garden). We love cooking fresh fish and seafood from the south coast and our locally produced meat is mouth-wateringly good. We have two craft beers produced exclusively for us, three other guest ales and six local ciders. With a lovely beer garden for the summer and a log fire in the winter, families and dog-walkers are welcome too. We have three en-suite bedrooms for b&b and a multi-purpose self-contained function room. But most of all there is "... ALWAYS A FRIENDLY WELCOME."

“Hiding their light under a bushel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2012

5 of us on a short break in Wells went to Wednesday Steak Night at the George. Being Surrey softy-types we are used to fine dining in poncey restaurants, so our first impression of this slightly tired-looking pub wasn't massively optimistic. What a lovely surprise - mein host was very friendly, and the food superb. My friends all had steak, which they said was really nice, and I had the cashew nut terrine, which the chef happily served with excellent dauphinoise potatoes instead of the usual new pots. The terrine and accompanying sauce were delicious, and the veg cooked to perfection. The chocolate fondant pudding was the best we've had, and the home-made ice cream was gorgeous. All good value too. Special mention to the 2 young ladies who waited on us - both really helpful, polite and efficient. Will definitely go back when in this area again.

Thank you for your comments Mrstrellis12. We're glad you liked everything and were pleasantly surprised. We'd been very busy doing internal renovations in the pub so neglected some of the exterior, so I understand how you thought the pub was slightly tired-looking. We actually chose well-worn flooring so it would have a lived-in feeling -- perhaps it was too realistic!
We've passed your comments to the waitresses and the rest of the staff and look forward to seeing you when you come again.

“Not bad but had better”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2012 via mobile

Service was good throughout our meal.

Starter, baked Camembert very good.

Partners lamb casserole very good.

My steak, only half was cooked as I had asked, rare........ The rest was overdone. Ironically my chips on the other hand were a little undercooked and quite hard.

Desert - both really very good.

So as per my title of this review and in summary, not bad at all.......but have had better.

Thanks for your comments Fallguy E. It is tricky to get steaks done just the way they are asked for and I'm sorry we didn't quite manage it for you. I'll ask the chef if there was a reason why your steak should have been served to you both rare and overdone, and I'll make certain we watch more closely the next time.

We're always trying to provide good food and drink in a friendly atmosphere, and usually we get it all right. But sometimes those ducks get a little out of line, so we'll try harder to keep them all in a row. I appreciate you taking the time to write and hope we'll see you again.

Jacqui, I'm glad your smaller portion was suitable for you. The smaller portion size is something we've made available after a lot of feedback from customers who simply don't want to each so much in a serving. It also helps leave room for pudding!
Thanks for your comments and welcome again.

“Ice cream to die for!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

This little pub is a gem. We went on a Thursday evening which is actually curry night. Although we didn't have the curry, the buffet selection for it looked very good. We chose from the main menu and found the choices to be varied . The steak and ale pie was excellent and the chips particularly nice. The chocolate ice cream was the best we have had, so rich with real dark chocolate pieces in! We found the staff to be very friendly and welcoming.

Thanks for your comments, Susanne. We make everything here ourselves, and aside from Steak and Ale being such a classic and poplular dish, our homemade ice creams are really good too. I'm glad you liked everything and we'll hope to see you again.

“Friendly rustic pub - good range of local ales”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2012

A traditional country pub that serves a good range of local produce in it's menu. Nice range of regular ales and guest ales. The landlord was warm and welcoming. The decor is suitably old-fashioned.

We both had food. Nichola had roast dinner and I had fillet steak. Couldn't fault the food ingredient quality, portion size or the friendly service. My 'rare' fillet steak came 'medium' and Nichola's roast potatoes just took the edge off it being great.

Would visit again.

Thank you for your comments, Andylosttheplot. We're glad you'd like to visit again, and we'll keep working to make the food just right. We're revisiting the way we cook and keep our roast potatoes and I can only apologise for the steak not being as rare as you'd expect. We appreciate your feedback and look forward to seeing you again.
