We were met at the ferry docks by a "taxi" arranged by Totoco. It was an old veteran of washed out, potholed roads, coated in dust, but proudly hanging in there. The ride from Moyogalpa lasted an hour, with numerous photo opportunities.... including the cattle round-up that expanded onto the "hiway" and all around us. When we got to the sign that said "TOTOCO", our van turned onto a rocky, potholed road that climbed higher and higher. As the driver slowly picked his way upward, dodging the larger holes and rocks, I found myself wondering what I had gotten us into! I remembered that Roslyn at Totoco had told me that they had the best views on Ometepe ... as we climbed, I suspected that she was right. Well, when we approached the crest of the road and I saw the palapa roofs of the cabanas, AND the staggering view of Volcun Concepcion, I knew that THIS was indeed, the piece of heaven I had imagined! Roslyn had warned me that the project was under construction. In fact, only two cabanas had been completed, and my party of 5 travelers happily occupied both, and didn't mind at all that we were the only guests there. With inspiring views of the lake and Concepcion, the construction was just a minor "no" issue. This is a TRUE Eco-lodge ... and as a result, it was a real learning experience, where we gained a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for those who dare and care enough to create a special place that honors the planet, as well as the local population. All of our meals there were delicious, bountiful, and healthy, and we planned all of our activities so that we would never miss one! We enjoyed kayaking, (which requires a driver to get you to the lake), and there are numerous trails through the forrest for hiking. The eerie sounds of the howler monkeys resonate thru the forrest in the mornings and evenings. There is nothing like going out early on one of the trails to experience the Howlers in full! There are many activities that you can enjoy, but just BEING, enjoying the ever changing clouds, shadows, and sunlight around Volcun Concepcion from your cabana deck , perhaps with a good book, mp3 player, and a glass of wine, is not an activity that you would want to overlook. The night sky is spectacularly bright, with no "light pollution" anywhere near. We received impeccable care from Martijn and Patricia. Since the project is new, some of the "kinks" are still being worked out, but Martijn is dedicated to working these out, and it's just part of the adventure. I think that all who really appreciate nature, seclusion, and a novel experience, should climb into that dusty van and head straight to Totoco ... you'll never regret it, and never forget it!
