“excellent way to visit Samaria Gorge”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2014

We stayed two nights to hike the Samaria Gorge. The hotel staff helped us organize the transport and our way back. We were on the trail at 8:15 and had a few hours with almost no other hikers. Got back to the hotel at 8pm or so. Very relaxing, no-stress hiking day. The hotel has sandwiches to take with you. Hotel is clean, quiet and comfortable. The restaurant was very good and the staff exceptionally friendly and helpful. Would definitely return and use as a base for more hiking.

We'd been up to the start of the Samaria Gorge (an astonishing place) and it was a cold day by Cretan standards for early May. Add 4000 feet of altitude and a brisk breeze and it was perishingly cold. After the sightseeing and taking photographs we wandered off in the car looking for a lunch stop and came across the Neos Omalos.

We walked in to the restaurant and were immediately cheered by the large open fire burning sizeable olive logs. Not what you'd expect in Crete in May but as I said - it was a cold day. The owner and family were charming and friendly and we ordered the recommended bean soup (for a cold day :-) ) which we shared, and a lamb casserole plus roast chicken dish for main courses. The impression of fresh and freshly-prepared food was heightened by the lady sitting by the fire with a large bag of "horta" - wild herb and plant greens - which she was picking through and preparing. The plant life up on the Omalos plateau would make it easy to find such things if you knew what to look for. Keep you fit doing it, too, I imagine.

Simple food, well prepared, tasty, and greatly enjoyed. Along with the bill came two whole oranges on a plate with two knives; what a simple and completely delicious end to a welcome meal.

Wandering round the building a little (OK, looking for the loos) I have to say the accommodation wing is spotlessly clean and nicely presented. This is basically a travellers' / hikers' hotel as you'd understand from its location, but it wouldn't, I think, disappoint for a short stay. The loos, by the way, were spotless - like the rest of the place. Good stuff!

We have just been to Crete on a walking holiday. Hired a car and drove to Omalos were we stayed at the Hotel Neos Omalos for 2 nights... It was amazing. The owners are friendly and hospitable. the rooms are comfortable and clean. The best part of our stay at this hotel was the food... words are insufficient, it is fresh, home cooked and delicious and very inexpensive. After a long walk up the Gorge it was wonderful coming back to amazing meals.

We wanted a hotel near the entrance to the Samaria Gorge. We chose this one not knowing how helpful the owner would be. We arrived on April 28 in the evening planning for an early start to the trek on the next day, we were told that the Gorge had been closed for 2 days due to rain (it had rained on the 27th, but not on the 28th). Giorgos the owner told us that he would only be able to give us answers at 7 in the morning. He would call the rangers and see if the gorge is open and he would call the ferry service to see if that would be providing service (it seems that the samll passenger service doesn't run in unfavorable weather). Since this was very disappointing he also gave us alternatives including calling the next hotel we were staying to find if he could switch datesif the gorge was closed another day - he was willing to delay my second day at the hotel by one day if the other hotel would agree to let me stay one day earlier than booked. Wellthe next day at breakfast we were told that the gorge was open and that ferry was running. Giorgos had the hotel's minibus take 10 of us to the entrance, saving us teh problem of how to get there - 4 km walk, even if you drive there you will have to walk to get your car after arriving back in Oamalos by public transport. In addition he gave us instructions concerning the ferry and where to get off the bus. He asked that we call him a soon as weget on the bus from Sougia and he would meet us at the appointed bus station. We arrived at thebus station and he was wauting for us and took us to the hotel. He couldn't be more helpful than that!
The room is comfortable and has central heating, important at this altitude and breakfas was sufficient
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay

Room Tip: If you arrive by car and want to leave it in Omalos while trekking this is the hotel to stay

This rural retreat, high up in the mountains, a few kilometres from the north entrance to Samaria Gorge, provided an ideal location for making an early start to the 'downhill' descent of this Gorge.

If you plan to use public transport, good planning is essential to avoid the cost of a taxi ride from Chania. Direct buses are infrequent and non existent after mid day. However, the hotel were happy to try to help out where all else failed.

The hotel itself has more than a resemblance to the look and feel of a traditional 'alpine' retreat and the early morning frost in mid October reminds the visitor that packing a few extra layers is a wise precaution. Pictures of the hotel amidst snow covered fields reinforce this perception.

A roaring log fire soon dispels the sometimes chilly exterior, and a large store of spare blankets in the bedroom was a welcome sign that they were equipped to make the stay as cosy and welcoming as possible. Evening cuisine was perhaps a little more rustic than had been found elsewhere but the breakfast, including yoghurt, honey and dried fruit was excellent.

Spent three nights here doing wonderful local walks. Basic hotel run by pleasant reserved mountain people. They made us very comfortable and served excellent food (much better than basic breakfast found elsewhere). Very helpful with lifts to walk starting places (and with a lift from Xyloscala when we arrived up the Samaria Gorge).

This Hotel is situated on the Omalas plateau, it is an ideal overnight stop prior to walking the Samaria Gorge. Basic accommodation, traditional home cooked food. I have given this 4 stars as it delivered my expectations.
