“Perfect stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2013

After a beautiful hike through the stunning Samaria Gorge we ended up at this nice B&B. The owner made us feel very welcome from the moment we arrived. The rooms are simple but nice and clean. They have been renovated 4 years ago but still look very new, especially the bathroom. A delicious breakfast with fresh orange juice and of course Greek yoghurt is served on the terrace in front of the B&B with a nice view to the mountains. Once we will hike the gorge again, we will defenitely come back! Thank you Stelios!

Like many other people who have visited crete it soon becomes an addiction with my wife and I now on our thirteenth consecutive visit, walking the lefki ora and other areas in west crete. We discoverer the pachnes taverna about six years ago and have returned every year to spend at least a few days of our holiday there. I think other reviewers have already said it all but the food is great, the rooms lovely and the hospitality shown by Stelios and Claire outsanding. Stelios is himself a keen walker and has been invaluable in giving us information on walks in the area that don't presently feature in walking guides. He is also very good source of knowledge on many other aspects of sfakia. We can't recommend the pachnes highly enough but hope that there will always be a room for us when we pitch up next year and the years to come.

We enjoyed a wonderful stay. Stelios was a great host and very helpful although never intrusive. The rooms look brand new although he told us they were 4 years old. He clearly takes a lot of pride in his b&b. Breakfast hit the spot and I would recommend his b & b wholeheartedly.

...........and will return. A friend and I first stayed here in 2011 when we were walking east to west across Crete. I liked it that much that I said I would return with my wife. The rooms are simple, comfortable and clean with very good showers, and a sunny balcony on which to rest your weary feet after trudging down "the Gorge" to Agia Roumeli. Alternatively find your way down the steep cliff path from Agios Ioannis, after staying at the lovely rooms that Stelios's family have there ( this is not an advert, they are very good)

Stelios and Claire (and their beautiful daughter) are caring and genuine and they make a stay here an absolute pleasure. Ask Stelios for help with walking in the area, his experience is vast. Then ask Clair for advice on your blisters....

I need to spend more time in Agia Roumeli to take advantage of what this region has to offer, and I will be staying at the Pachnes when I return.

Footnote: We didn't eat at the Pachnes on this visit, we wandered down to the harbour. Roumeli is a very quiet place once the Samaria crowds have gone, and there are a number of places to eat in a very small village. We eat opposite the ferry quay, and it was very good. Sorry, I can't remember the name.

Room Tip: All the rooms are good.

After visiting Athens and Chania (North-west Crete), Pachnes was the perfect relaxing stay. The rooms were very clean and the hospitality of Stelios, Julius and Valia made our short stay very enjoyable! It was the closest B&B to the hiking path after descending from Samaria Gorge and away from the crowds at the beach. The hike along the coast towards Loutro was absolutely gorgeous! We would love to return. We recommend Pachnes for a clean, restful stay.

Pachnes B&B is set back away from all the madness of the village. The rooms are rustic in style, charming and clean. Stelios goes above and beyond providing his guests with excellent service and fantastic authentic Cretan food. Stelios has intimate knowledge of all the hiking routes and can provide you with all the details and best tips for your hiking trips. You won't find a better place to relax in Agia Roumeli.

After trekking in the White Mountains and along the coastline of West Crete every summer for almost ten years, Pachnes B&B, Café and Taverna has become my number one hangout and safe haven. I would highly recommend Pachnes to anyone who appreciate a (very) quiet and peaceful place with new, spacious clean rooms and excellent, simple, local food. Pachnes is owned and run by Stelios and his wife, Claire, who are always extremely kind and helpful. At Pachnes you are light-years from the charmless, pushy and noisy tourist resorts around Chania and Retymnon. In addition to that, staying at Pachnes is very good value especially considering that wireless internet, breakfast and limitless use of air-condition is included. In my opinion you will never find a better deal anywhere in West Crete. Pachnes is of course located in Agia Roumeli which is one the most underestimated places in Crete. Most travellers only know Agia Roumeli as the place where you collapse from exhaustion after scrambling down the Samaria Gorge, and that’s a darn shame. The gorge is certainly amazing and an absolute must for anyone who enjoy hiking even the slightest, but Agia Roumeli has so much more to offer. First of all it’s a perfect base for a number of spectacular walks along the coast and into the mountains which you will have almost all to yourself, but don’t tell anyone or that might change.
