“Excellent wine country location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2013

The hotel Viura is a unique and eclectic hotel in the middle of the Rioja wine region.
It is very convenient to the multitude of nearby Bodegas (make reservations in advance). The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The rooms were large and very comfortable. Dinner was excellent with a large wine selection. Would definately stay here again. Highly recommended.

This was the first of a couple of surprising finds in the Rioja area. All designed by major architects. Being accustomed to older chateaux and mansions in the French wine regions, in the Rioja they have dared to be different. Of course Frank Gehry's Marques de Rincal, but also Calatrava's Ysios winery and this fun hotel. The service, rooms, bed, location were all impeccable. Our restaurant meal started out with a delicious first course; however we found the main dish (fish) slightly undercooked for our taste. They took it back without any problem and served a new one.

I am surprised by some of the reviews. This hotel had large beautiful modern rooms, great service and food and was reasonably priced in a perfect location to visit wineries. My husband is an architect and LOVED the juxtaposition of this modern hotel in a small historic village. We had a room with a balcony looking back on the city. We spent three nights and went wine tasting during the day (Bodegas Muga, Baiggori, Benjamin Romeo, Marques de Riscal and Bodegas Ysios) all within a 30 min drive or less-The hotel can email a list. One night we went to Logrono to the famous street Calle Lauren for tapas !!!The bartender was great and hotel staff friendly and helpful. The rooftop deck amazing to take in a siesta or have a glass of wine and watch the sunset. The gentleman in the wine bar attached took us to the caves below and offered us free tastings of some of the Rioja wines. This hotel deserves a 5 Star rating.

Room Tip: Room with a balcony

The hotel is hip and funky, which is fun, but it was all a little odd. The village is fairly charmless with no restaurants or bars so the hotel is your only option. That said the hotel food and wine was perfectly fine, the breakfast was very good.
The rooms were spacious and comfortable.
The location was good in terms of exploring the region.

We had a good stay here, but the experience was a bit strange. The hotel is located in a very small working class town where there is nowhere else to visit at night (or day for that matter).
The feel of the hotel is quite formal, but this just didn't work for me in terms of the location, service and overall sense of quality we experienced. While I don't have any complaints, I also don't really have anything to rave about. It's just weird and out of place.

Weird...almost "The Kings New Clothes" scenario. Hotel looks really out of place in this small old world Spanish village & seems as if it perhaps tried to match the much grander, more artistically designed Marques de Riscal hotel in nearby Elciego( which was full of American tourists when we called in...a good reason not to stay there?) Despite its "edgy" design, we really felt that Viura lacks a definite something...in fact some rooms/areas look like the builders ran out of time or money & just went home, leaving it unfinished. Breakfast was a real struggle...we had to ask for each item, ie tea please, milk please, butter please, toast please..they were brought separately, which added to the long wait to be served....it was an odd experience! We wouldn't return here! But we loved the tapas bars in Logrono.

Room Tip: We were told we had been given an upgrade...but we overlooked the car park & had no balcony!??

We chose this hotel because it was an SLH in the middle of the Rioja wine country. It was a good location to explore this part of Spain. There is really nothing in this little town other than the hotel, but it made a good base. The design is very modern, and a bit "edgy", but we enjoyed it, and the rooms were comfortable. Hallways are "blackboards" with room numbers written in chalk; rooms are concrete with modern furniture. However, everything was functional. Great bed & shower. The room was very quiet, so good sleep quality. I had been concerned about the concrete hard surfaces being noisy, but it was not. It was cold and rainy when we visited, and we had to ask for the heat to be turned on for our floor. After that, it was cozy. Breakfast was a small buffet, but good. This is a good place; off-the-beaten track. Staff was helpful in recommending restaurants and touring the area.
