We were looking for a new year break with our children - somewhere with great food and a little glitz for New Year's Eve. We came across the Wild Boar online and booked on the phone after putting the lovely Michelle through a million questions.
We were not disappointed. The staff were all amazingly friendly. They could not do enough to make our stay enjoyable and relaxed.
There was a nice balance of activities as part of the package including a tour of the smokehouse and the chance to try your hand at flavouring your own fish/meat which we all enjoyed as a family as the staff made sure to include the children.
On the second day the manager Andy and Anthony led a walk around the surrounding land. Thoughtfully Anthony maintained a fast pace for those of us capable but Andy stayed back with those on a slower pace. It was a great intro to the wonderful countryside the hotels set in. A lovely touch was mulled wine and hot chocolate at half way point and transport to take those who didn't want to continue back to the hotel.
New Years Eve started with champagne tasting and a wonderful menu. The staff were incredibly organised and although tables seemed to eat the different courses at varying times, we did not feel left out, neglected or fed too fast. The music was thoughtfully chosen and you could not help singing along to a little Sinatra. After dinner the DJ kicked in with a brilliant mix of tunes to suit all the different ages.
What I loved most was the way our daughters were able to simply join in with whatever we were doing. Even on the first evening at the casino that was part of the monte carlo theme, the girls were allowed to join in and spin the wheel or roll the dice which really made their day. There is a kids menu but we only had food from there on the first evening because the staff are happy to accommodate smaller portions from the main menu which is a real big tick in my book.
The food is stunning. If you are vegetarian, do not be put off by the smokehouse led menu. There is plenty of vegetarian choice that doesn't revolve around pasta bakes. The breakfasts were my favourite mealtime. Great selection of traditional cooked breakfast from eggs florentine to scotch pancakes and kippers. It all comes on time and the portion sizes are just right.
The wine list is extensive but not excessively priced. There are a lovely selection of wines for all budgets.
Our room was lovely and full of character which we loved. We all stayed in one room and the girls slept on Camp beds which were made up with crisp white linen and had cuddly toys awaiting on pillows. My feedback to the hotel would be to add a few more hooks on walls as we were not able to hang wet jackets anywhere.
My only other negative point of feedback would be the timings for breakfast on New Year's Day. 10am after a night of partying is simply too early! An extension to 11 would have been really welcome as would a later checkout of 12 rather than 11.
One thing to note is that this is an old coaching inn and as such the furniture is not modern and the decor in places is 'rustic'. We loved this but if you a expecting modern 4 star you might be disappointed. We loved the fireplaces and cosy feel of walking around in walking socks with boots left at the door. My girls loved the nooks and crannies and were happy playing with their dolls or reading in a cosy chair. There are no specific kids activities which we were happy with but again if you are travelling with children do not expect a playground, toys or specific kids activities. The reception is well stocked with DVDs but there are no children's areas or games.
You are able to use the facilities at the low wood hotel leisure centre which is a nice touch but to be honest the facilities there are dated and I wouldn't recommend going til they have refurbished them which I hope they do soon. It was a let down.
Overall we had a lovely relaxing stay and would definitely return and recommend to our friends.
