“We'll be coming back!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 12, 2013

We needed somewhere to stay for a friends wedding up in the Lake District at the beginning of December, and as the hotel they were getting married in was fully booked, we looked online for somewhere close and stumbled on this place. And we're glad we did! I can't imagine the welcome we'd have received in the hotel would have been anywhere near as hospitable or friendly as the one we received here. Wine, tea, biscuits and a log fire were offered (and accepted!) pretty much as soon as our bags were through the door. The room we stayed in was really nice, especially the en suite. We were there for 2 nights, and so got to enjoy 2 breakfasts. A full spread of cereals, fresh toast and yoghurts and fruit etc, plus a full english on day one, and pancakes with bacon and maple syrup the next - both of them as marvelous as the other reviews on here had led us to hope they would be.

In summary, I'm glad we stumbled on this place, and we've already got plans to go back in the not so distant future.

Thanks you

We stayed here for 2 nights and thoroughly enjoyed the comfort and hospitality on offer. The house is beautifully furnished and combines things modern with things antique ! The power shower is to die for and there is a small fridge in the run containing milk and bottled water! Jo and Steve are very welcoming and provide tea and cake on arrival . They take the time to sit with their guests, to chat and remember names . Breakfast is taken around a communal table and there is something to suit everybody - lovely cereals, fresh fruit and yoghurts and a choice of cooked options. All beautifully presented and cooked to order.
Gilpin Mill is about 5 miles from Bowness and there are very good restaurants and pubs a short distance away. It is worth studying the map before you set off because Gilpin Mill is a little out of the way, but well worth it when you arrive. No mobile phone signal but wi-fi is good.
One of the best B and B s we have stayed at and would unreservedly recommend.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 3 which had a marvellous power shower. One of the other rooms has a bath as well

We stayed at Gilpin Mill for a wedding being held at the near by Wild Boor Inn. We booked in having read the previous TripAdvisor's comments and were not disappointed. We agree with all the glowing reports of wonderful hosts, breakfasts, rooms and super-comfortable beds! We even had the benefit of a crisp and sunny autumn morning so strolled around the local area drinking in the peace and quiet and glorious autumn colours. A perfect location for restorative weekends.

Room Tip: There's no reception for phones or sat navs so make sure you know where you are going!

Had a fantastic weekend here
Rooms are fabulous - one of the best power showers I have had in a while!
Breakfasts are great - will keep you going till the evening.
Lots of good pubs nearby for food but make sure you book.
Free and fast wifi.
Just a quick warning about the final road to get there- narrow and only wide enough for one vehicle- fortunately nothing ever came in the opposite direction.
Highly recommended - would stay again

A bit of history –“Gilpin Mill has been a mill since 1500 using the water power firstly to clean and thicken wool as a fulling mill and latterly, in the 19th century as a bobbin mill turning wooden bobbins for the Lancashire cotton industry. In its heyday the water stored in the millpond would have powered the 17ft water wheel that would have in turn driven the four wood turning lathes in the mill. As far as we know the milldam was washed away about hundred years ago and the mill fell into disuse and it collapsed in 1975.”
Where to begin: Gilpin Mill is a bit of a challenge to find if you are not familiar with the area, but it is well worth the effort. We actually approached it from the wrong road, as we were not paying attention to directions very well. But once you find your way there the first time, it is a breeze to navigate the surrounding area. The whole complex, complete with mill and lovely garden, is charming. Jo and Steve warmly greeted us. They are just delightful. We relaxed and chatted in the comfortable living room while enjoying a crackling fire, delicious tea, and freshly baked scones.
Gilpin Mill is an absolutely gorgeous home. I say home because that is exactly what it is. When building their new mill house Jo and Steve left no detail out - beamed ceilings, slate floors, comfortable furniture, beautiful fabrics, big windows, lots of light. We have stayed in many B & Bs and this is at the top of the list, hands down. We were there with family, and after a long day out we were welcomed with a warm fire and a glorious living room in which to relax. It was just like being in one’s own home.
This B & B stresses comfort factor! The quiet bedroom was very large, bright, and warmly decorated. The bathroom was also expansive and luxurious. From the bedside tea tray to the bathroom products, no detail was missed. The view out our window was a hillside pasture with grazing sheep. Who could ask for more!
Every morning we enjoyed a delicious breakfast, cooked to specification, before heading off to explore the Lake Windermere area. Jo and Steve recommended several close by pubs and made reservations for us. We tried a new place every night. This B & B was a real gem. We feel very fortunate to have discovered this wonderful place. Thank you, Jo and Steve, for a wonderful experience!

From a colleague's recommendation, we booked before leaving Australia and we were not disappointed. Jo & Steve are gracious hosts. Thankfully we had good directions through unfamiliar terrain. On arrival we were shown to our modern and comfortable room. The setting is so what we were looking for coming from the other side of the planet. Steve's guidance to the areas attractions and local pubs was much appreciated and Jo's breakfast's would satisfy anyone.

I think the perfect review score says it all. As always the hosts make the visit and Jo and Steve are welcoming, very helpful and charming.
Nothing is too much trouble. The breakfast was possibly the best We have ever had. The house is spotless and beautiful. The bedroom had a lovely big bed, with a modern bathroom and lots of nice touches.
The location is very quiet with walks out of the front door.
Fabulous hosts, fabulous house and fabulous location, nothing to fault. Can't wait to return.
