“Relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff, great food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2013

Welcoming at reception and in restaurant. Bedroom comfortable. Food really lovely both fish and meat. Made for a very relaxed night away with Rye, Camber Sands and the rugged Dungeness all on the doorstep. Will go again.

Stayed here with voucher from travel zoo.

Great staff, fab food, really lovely room.

Only niggle.... Tv room is a bit odd, would be better made more into a bar type area than vast room with massive tv on.

Booked a deal with Travelzoo for one nights stay with 3 course dinner and breakfast. Apparently they only run the offer during low season but it was very good value for money. Very comfortable bed and good sized bathroom. Bedroom was not huge but adequate. Really liked the reclaimed driftwood furniture. Dinner was good and enjoyed the local lager. Staff were nice and top notch breakfast with lots of choice. Will definitely book special offer again if it comes up but probably would not pay full price in high season.

Treated my hubby to a romantic get away for his birthday and it was lovely, just what we wanted. All very relaxed, nice atmosphere in the hotel and restaurant. Room was very comfortable and bed was divine.
Shame that the bathroom felt quite dated - really could do with modernising to bring it up to the same standard as the rest of the property.

Reception staff were most helpful - we had a few requests that were met with ease - ice, our own champagne chilled for us, DVD's to hire.

Nice lounge to relax and read the papers in. Dined in the restaurant and the food was divine, as was the wine - we chose a wine but first tasted another to discount it and it was so lovely we opted for the cheaper, house wine instead. It was lovely to have a local wine. Makes a nice change not being pushed into buying the more expensive option.
Very accommodating reservations team regarding request to accommodate 1 meat eater and 1 vegetarian within a package DBB offer.

Room Tip: We had a standard double which was lovely.

Checked into the hotel last Friday, ordered from the wine list, when receiving the bill, wine was more than advertised, on closer inspection of wine list it is displayed as a glass and a Carafe, not a bottle, this should have been explained to me when I ordered a bottle.

As much as we were sitting down at 9.30pm, we were told that there were mussels and pate on offer, no problem, except that the mussels were bordering on "off" Spoke to waitress, she seemed very uninterested, in fact almost annoyed. We weren't the only couple in the restaurant, so it wasn't as if we were keeping them staying late. Chef was even chatting to another table. The least he could have done was to have come over to us and offered an apology or another meal. Sorry guys, will be looking at staying elsewhere next time, pity though, as the room was first class.

Dear Biscuit8525
Our 'Drinks List' that sits on the bar/tables is a short list of wines that we sell by the glass/carafe. Our 'Wine List' is a separate list that is normally handed to diners at lunch and dinner. It shows all our wines as well as the wines on the Drinks List. The confusion here it seems is you ordered off the Drinks List and thought that you were ordering a bottle and not a carafe. Whilst it is clearly indicated on the Drinks List the wines are priced by the glass and carafe we agree that this might cause occasional confusion and adjusted our Drinks List accordingly so it now shows the price for wines by the glass, carafe and bottle!
Our Roast Mussels with garlic and herbs are one of our most popular dishes. We buy a lot! and I can absolutely assure you they are the freshest mussels you are likely to eat however the waitress you mention should absolutely not have appeared 'uninterested' - we really work hard at ensuing our service is genuinely warm, helpful and cheerful.

I found the Gallivant hotel when I was looking for a beach wedding venue. I wanted something different and more laid back. The first time I visited I went on my own for a bit of a look around and had lunch there. I loved it immediately. The food was great and the staff super friendly. I came back again and spoke to Annelis (in the restaurant) and Natalie (the wedding lady) and it swung it for me. We've been back a couple of times now and have stayed the night and have eaten there in the evening. If you are going to have dinner there you have to order the lamb. Everything else is good but the lamb is just really, really good. The rooms are clean and cozy and we are always greeted warmly. I do not get the bad reviews, it's not on the beach, but it doesn't say it is. You walk over the road up the sand dunes and then there it is, a big wide beach. If you look at their website it looks exactly like the pictures, it's not stuffy or snobby and that is exactly why i'm getting married there.

Positives:
As there are no photos of the outside of the hotel I did wonder what it would look like but was pleasantly surprised! Inside, it's designed beautifully, and has lots of nice details. The common areas are particularly well designed. The staff are friendly and efficient. The location is good too, just across the road from the path through the dunes to the beach. The food is particularly good; our favourites were the fish soup, the melt-in-the-mouth steak and the pear tatin... delicious. Breakfasts are good too.

Negatives:
Our standard double room was small... this in itself wasn't a problem for a couple of nights but the small double bed meant we didn't sleep that well. The water pressure isn't great and the poorly designed/chosen mixer tap for the shower is almost uncontrollable, and very annoying. Bathroom (Room14) could do with a bit of a refresh too.

Overall though, it's a very stylish small hotel with great food, staff and location. I'd just wait until one of the larger rooms was available next time.

Room Tip: Be wary of the small beds in standard doubles, superior rooms have superking beds and cost only a te...

Welcome to our restaurant with rooms across the road the the beach. Inspired by the coastal motels you might find in California, we're a bit shabby chic, but above all relaxed and welcoming. Almost all of our fresh produce is sourced within 10 miles of us, most of it only hours old. Our beds are the most comfortable we could find (we tried a lot). Our beach is extraordinary. In 2014 we were included in The Sunday Times 'Top 100 UK Hotels - for foodies' and Square Meals 'Top 100 Restaurants'. In 2015 Sunday Times Travel magazine listed our beach in the 'World's 50 Best Beaches'. ... more   less
