We have been eating regularly at Pepino's restaurant for twelve years, and the food and his personal welcome each visit makes this a favourite haunt to eat, either a deux, or to take friends and family new to the Marche region of Italy. Pepino is really a local institiution, a lifeblood of this working town, and a dear person. A good clue as to the consistency and reasonable pricing of Roverino is evident at lunch with the restaurant full of local workers and shop-owners - Italians know their food. Evenings are just as busy, again full of locals. There is no menu as the proprietor comes to your table and goes through what's being cooked that evening. Being closer to the mountains, expect the emphasis to be on local meat dish specialities - lamb, wild boar and those cooked on the fire (alla brace) especially. Antipasti are varied - excellent roasted tomatoes, the Primi are always good - the lasagne if you're there on a Tuesday is the best I've had anywhere. Good local wines - try the Rosso Piceno Superiore or Falerio grape varieties, and if you've eaten everything put in front of you, you may feel like asking for a 'mistra' afterwards (local aniseed liqueur). No need to book, closed Sundays.
