The Beeches was the venue for my sister-in-law's wedding on Saturday 8th September 2007.
As we were travelling from the North East we decided to stay for both the Friday & Saturday nights.
The first problem we encountered was making a booking - 3 emails were sent before we were able to actually make a booking - apparently they had been experiencing problems with their website. To be fair, as way of recompense, they offered us a "superior" room for the standard rate.
On arrival, the checking in process was reasonably painless, although the receptionist appeared to be on a personal call which she completed before serving us. Our "superior" room was on the 2nd floor, however, due to the roof had, reduced headroom over half of the bedroom, a bit of a problem for myself.
The bathroom intially appeared impressive but on closer inspection was fitted out in a very, cheap, slap-dash manner.
We had a meal on the Friday evening in Oscar's restaurant - part of the complex. My meal was ok, but a friend sent his Lemon sole dish back for being cold, only to be told that it was supposed to be that way, which he accpeted, only to discover that only half of the dish was cold and the other half hot(???).
The waiter was alos unprepared to split the bill down - a bit embarassing seeing as there were 16 people around the table, some of whom had literally met at the table.
Enough of the negatives - the wedding on the Saturday was very well handled - as a member of the wedding part, I was impressed with the lady who appeared to be in charge on the day - everything went smoothly and the food was of a good standard. The only slight criticism was that the room was jammed to capacity and some "larger" members of the party were pretty much trapped at one end of the room until the wedding breakfast had finished. i'm not sure if it was made clear to the happy couple that it would be such a crush.
The breakfasts both mornings were completely different - on the morning of the wedding the dining room was unavailable due to our wedding and it was served in the bar - only continental buffet was laid out; a full english was available on request.
On the Sunday a full buffet breakfast was available in the dining room - although this was a shambles, we arrived at 9.15am to find the only free tables covered in used crockery. we also had to wait for the buffet to be replenished as well as chase staff for cutlery, toast, sauces and beverages.
I'm not sure why they couldn't turn the dining room around in time for the wedding on the Saturday - they would have had 4.5 hours to get the room ready after breakfast had finished.
I would suggest that, having undergone a refurbishement in recent years, the bulk of the expenditure has gone on the downstairs decor & fitness centre, which was very impressive.
The main thing for us was that the wedding went off alright, which it did, but outside of that the hotel had too many flaws for us to consider when visiting Nottingham in the future.
