“Nice Place and very nice air. So fresh”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2013

This site is very good. There are totally 9 temples , but only 5 temples are complete as origin.

International tourist must pay Approx US $5 to enter entire sites.

You can take a horse riding to see all temples or some of that with various prices.

There were also a track for mountain tracking.

Nice adventure and experience.

These tempeles were in Bandungan area near ambarawa or near ungaran part of semarang district central java.

“Up in the hill.. Beautiful!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2013

I loooove this place!
It is located in Ambarawa, 1 hour driving from Semarang using toll road. Beautiful view along the road. Becareful to drive as there are sharp turns and uphill, and be sure your cars in the fit condition.
You can riding the horse from locals. They are well organized and the price is fair enough. By slow walking maybe 3-4 hours totally. Some temples are really high, but the view is priceless. You can see Rawa Pening from the top, and Ambarawa. Path for horse and foot walking is separate in some routes. Mind the horse [--] at some road. I recommend you to rent the horse then you can enjoy this magnificent sites freely.
No English speaking guide provided and less information. No booklet for tourist. You'd better organize the trip from Semarang if you want to visit this place.
The weather around 15 deg Celcius and foggy, will be warmer in the noon.

“Small Temples across the Hills”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2012

Can't imagine how people built this temple complex centuries back! It took half an hour to drive from the main Semarang - Ambarawa road. Then the walk from one hill to another, where the temples stand. As a so-called modern human being, I ran out of breath just to carry my own weight between the first and the second temple. Let alone carrying those stone for building the temples.
Visited Gedong Songo with my husband and my 9 y.o. daughter, we took three horses to get through all the temples in the complex. Even though it's called Gedong Songo (songo means nine in Javanese), actually there are only five small temples across the hills. The longest horse ride would take circa an hour, and they already have fix prices written on the board. And that's exactly what I really fond in this place: no haggling, no "Ma'am we need money for food" kinda thing, and the horsemen were nice.
Btw, it was my first horse ride after 30 years or so. It was quite scary at first, because the route was up and downhills. But my horseman always tried to make me comfortable. He also took pictures of us on the horse using our camera. Really good experience!

“poor management”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2012

The temple is actually very small if we compare it with other temples, but the temple is very interesting because it is located in a hilly area. Again, poor management of heritage make it looks terrible and poor.

“The Views Go on Forever”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2012

Bit by bit we aim to add and review every major temple site on Java. The latest addition is Gedong Songo, which means 'Nine Buildings' in Javanese. These little temples date from the earliest Hindu kingdoms on Java and pre-date the world-class monuments of the Prambanan Plain around Yogyakarta. They are square-bodies with a pyramidial roof and some of the bas reliefs have been preserved.

The best thing about this site, apart from the great age of the temples, is the magnificent location. They are located on the top of a hill some 900 metres about sea level in the quiet little hill resort of Ambarawa- otherwise known for its Dutch-era locomotive trains. As you walk or ride a horse up the rocky path from the ticket booth to the temple complex, you will pass by steaming vents with a smell of sulphur them and several volcanic peaks rise in the distance. Mountains and ancient temples- what more could you want from a day trip in Java?
