“Great Lodge, Great Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2012

Inn on Rupurara was my first lodge stay in africa and I could not have been happier.

We stayed in a twin room overlooking the rock and the view was beautiful. Drinks on the balcony finished off most nights :)

Two activities daily are included in the room rate and we tried many different things, afternood game drive with sundowners, climbing the rock, trip to the waterfall, horseriding etc. All were fabulous and we saw game on every one. If you have your own 4WD go to the waterfall and have a swim. So refreshing and beautiful. You can also get really close to the animals on horseback, way closer than in the car so if you like that sort of thing go for a horse ride.

Breakfast is included and dinner is several courses but not included in the room cost.

The lodge itself has a bar for drinks before dinner and upstairs has a library with lounge and board games.

Like everywhere in Zim the power goes off periodically. This may have gotten better lately, not usre. But just roll with it and do something that doesn't require electricity.

Nyanga is a beautiful region in Zimbabwe, and Inn on the Rupurara is is beautiful settings within these mountains. The chalets blend well in the landscape, are well made and appointed. Food is nice and the service at the hotel is professional. However, making the reservation was unnecessarily complicated, and we were then placed in a room that was more expensive than what we booked -we discovered this only when checking out and asked for more than the already expensive rate agreed by email. Fortunately I had carried with me the email printout. Also a bit disappointing finding in such an expensive hotel that beddings were not all that fresh.

We had a wonderful four nights here and would highly recommend it. It's a beautiful location right in the middle of Zimbabwe's stunning Eastern Highlands, 3 hours drive from Harare. Lodges with balconies face either the valley (amazing views) or around a pond. The accommodation was very clean and nicely furnished.

Service was excellent. The staff were very accommodating and flexible. I was also impressed with the attention to detail. The food is good ($25 for four-course dinner), particularly when you consider the remoteness of the location, and the wine list was pretty varied and reasonably priced. Guests are woken in the morning by tea and coffee in your room before you head down to breakfast.

Your stay is inclusive of activities in the lodge's large grounds, from mountain biking, game drives and horse riding etc. That was brilliant and makes it a great break for couples, groups of friends and families alike. If you do stay here, you shouldn't miss out on the attractions in the local area from hikes in Nyanga National Park to scenic drives through the mountains.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the valley have stunning views.

I made reservations via multiple email communications with a hotel representative. The day before I was to leave I called to arrange activities and arrival and was informed I had no reservation and the hotel was booked. I was told that the representative I made reservations with did not enter it in the system. As one can imagine, we drastically changed our vacation plans at the last minute which was stressful and not appreciated. The hotel was unapologetic, and the individual I made the reservations with would not return my calls. Very bad service.

In the end, we were much happier camping at Nyanga National Park for a fraction of what we would have wasted at the Inn on Rupurara. We have the Inn's poor customer service and inability to keep track of reservations to thank for a beautiful weekend in the outdoors. We did all and more than the Inn promised and on our own time frame.

From the minute we entered the private gated entrance, we were in for non-stop fun. The facility is situated on some very scenic acreage of the Eastern Highlands in Zimbabwe. Part of its charm is its location (which is remote) so don't plan on running out to the store after you get there.

The lodges were very comfortable with spacious room sizes and adequately large bathrooms. Separate showers and soaking tubs were nice and the floor in the bath was a cheery, bright tile.

The entire staff was so gracious and helpful, you couldn't ask for better service. Food at the inn was varied, hot and delicious.

We did the game drive (great, great photos), horseback riding (up close to the giraffe and zebras), and the mountain climbing (all the way to the top of Rupurara Rock). Enjoyed each immensely. Cecil was our guide and has climbed the mountain over 900 times - at age 70+!!!

Two cautions for would-be guests: If you are in a wheel chair or have difficulty walking, this would be a real challenge. Steps everywhere and the walkways are dimly lit and not smooth.
Secondly, if you crave electricity and Internet, be prepared for withdrawal symptoms - they both go out on a repeated basis. You are in the wild, so come prepared. If you came to get away from it all - you've just found HEAVEN.

Room Tip: We staayed in cabin 12 which had a nice view of Rupurara Rock. Downside was that it was a loooooooo...

A wonderful hotel in a marvellous location.
The staff could not be faulted and the food and cleanliness of a high standard.
Theonly drawback isthat if you are at all infirm the hotel is not for you. The rooms are away from the lodge and need care in walking to them especially after dark. There are also a lot of steps.
Wonderful stay.

My best friend and I (both in hospitality) spent 2 nights at Inn on Rupurara. Having both grown up in Mutare and spent many days in Nyanga as children we were both excited to return.

On the first day we had the most wonderful lunch. The food is top class! The game drive that afternoon was lovely. The guide is very informative and has some funny stories to tell.

Our second day we were taken to the waterfall for a picnic. This was the highlight for me. A beautiful waterfall with swimming pool below all to ourselves!( although Nyanga water is a lot colder than we remembered it being when we were kids :) !)

We were so sad to leave! It was wonderful to be looked after for a change. A very big thank you to Charles, Boven, Lot and the lovely Gloria for a fantastic time. We will be back!
