We stayed at Susan's two nights in September, and we loved it! It's a beautiful new home with an incredible view of Carraigh Fhada farm/lighthouse and Port Ellen.

Susan is an accomplished home baker, and she's incredibly generous, so "continental breakfast" doesn't do justice to the lavish spread she offers each day. She also makes sure there are ample treats at all times both in the sitting room and on the tray table in your room. My favorite small touch was a dram of whisky every evening. Needless to say, we had great conversations with our fellow guests, and we slept incredibly well.

Her father-in-law Ralph is a walking compendium of Islay history--and he would've made a fabulous tour guide in another life. (He actually worked as an excise agent for many years, so he's never at a loss for an interesting anecdote.) He's also the go-to guy for getting off the beaten path, and he steered us to a very good meal at the Islay Hotel.

I hesitate to recommend it too highly, though--we don't want Swallow's Roost to be so popular that we won't be able to stay again!

my husband and i went to Islay for 3 days in September. And what can I say the Swallow's roost is a perfect place to stay at! Clean, nice beds and rooms. And the breakfast was great! Lots of leaflets to look through. A very nice sitting room to relax and chat with other guests. Nice walking distance to Port Ellen.

My partner and I travelled to Islay for a holiday as my partner is a keen whisky drinker. Susan was a fantastic host. Her B&B is very comfortable and welcoming and she has lots of leaflets and books about Islay for you to peruse and plan your next day. She gave very helpful advice after we booked to help us plan our stay, quick to answer questions via email. Ralph also went out of his way, dropping us in town early on during our stay before we hired a car. Susan's B&B is a little way out of Port Ellen town (about 30 min walk) and up a hill, and the views from there, over the lighthouse are lovely, its very peaceful, quiet and restful. Thank you Susan for helping to make our Islay stay to enjoyable.

This is the place to stay when you'r on Islay!
Susan and her "in laws" Mary and Ralph made this a visit to remember, they really want you to feel welcome. Incredible breakfasts, fantastic view over Port Ellen and an outstanding service. Ralph took us under his wings and made sure we made the most out of our stay. We will definitly be back as soon as possible.

I travelled to Port Ellen to visit some whisky distilleries and play golf, and I stumbled upon Swallow's Roost. What a fantastic find. The Inn is perched above the Kilnaughton Bay just outside of Port Ellen (about a half hour walk to Port Ellen) and offers beautiful vistas of the Bay and town. The owners, Susan and David Middleton, are fantastic hosts; they went out of their way at every turn to make sure I was happy and comfortable, even preparing late night snacks after an evening on the golf course. They prepared me great breakfasts every morning. They are the nicest people and they encourage you to feel at home in their inn. David or his very nice father, Ralph, drove me if I needed to go to distilleries or to go to Bowmore. The rooms are very clean and some offer a nice view of the bay. The price is very reasonable in comparison to some of the other B&Bs on the island and is a real good deal. Islay is a wonderful place to visit and Swallow's Roost is a great place to stay. Highly recommended.

Swallows' Roost

If you take a trip down Islay way and need a place to stay,
Swallows' Roost is just the best, we must truly say.
Perched high up where eagles dare, the view is oh so fine,
Of beaches, hills and water, it's all just sublime.

She is the quine of the roost, in charge of her domain,
She comes from Aberdeen and Susan is her name.
It is your home while you are here, you're made to feel at ease,
Nothing's too much trouble, everything done to please.

At breakfast time it is a feast, fruit, croissants and all that's good,
To start your day on a high, from all this wholesome food.
So don’t delay, book today, and give yourself a boost
And find the charm of Islay high up on Swallows' Roost.

For our first time on Islay we could not have asked for a better place to stay. Swallows' Roost provides a first class B&B experience - from the welcome when you arrive to the excellent breakfast, and to anything else you need! The only thing that surpasses this is the view! We were so enchanted with both our accommodation and Islay, that we were moved to poetry! - See Above!

Room Tip: The bedroom with King size bed, at the front of the house, has the best view

After speaking to Susan on the phone booking a stay here I knew we were in for a great time. It was a surprise birthday present for my partner and it coincided with my birthday whilst on Islay. Nothing can prepare you for the view when you get out of the car at the house-it blew us away! Susan came out to meet us and she is one of the nicest people you could ever meet. It was almost like we'd been there before as she welcomed us into her home. The inside is immaculate and the room looking out to the lighthouse and Port Ellen is the one you have to have to have to book!! Susan got the kettle on and we sat in the communal lounge which was huge and we all chatted along with the few other guests that were staying. Bottled water was supplied along with biscuits, crisps, coffee and tea. Susan with help from the 'in-laws' Ralph and Mary prepared a lovely breakfast in the conservatory again with stunning views. They are every bit as lovely as Susan offering local info and advice on how best to see the things we wanted to see. They made my birthday very special by driving us to the Ardbeg distillery as we were wanting to sample the whisky there along with Lagavulin and Laphroaig which are about a mile apart heading in the direction back to Port Ellen. And also driving us down to where we were having my birthday meal in Port Ellen in the evening.
To get there our ferry went into Port Askaig which is the other end of the island so we drove down through Bridgend and Bowmore which took about 30 minutes. From Port Ellen to the house takes about 10 minutes in the car around the bay. It does look a really long way between the two when looking across the bay but only takes about 45 minutes to walk and it's a nice walk too. I wouldn't want to do it every day though as it's a bit up and down in places. We left from the Port Ellen ferry terminal which took no time at all to get to. We were sad to leave Swallows Roost but are looking forward to going back. I would recommend staying here above everywhere else on the island to experience the views and hospitality that Susan offers.

Room Tip: Get the sea view room. If it's not available change your dates!!!
