“Marvellous collection of art and furniture in a stunning setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2013

Visited on a cold April 1st, beautiful Elizabethan house with all sorts of features and creatures on the outside, make sure you look up! There was plenty to see inside, a huge collection of royal portraits where you could get up close and marvel at the skill of the artists and at how remarkably well preserved they are. There were beautiful grounds to wander around and we had a chuckle at the robot mowers cutting the grass, such a contrast of old and new!. Well worth a visit to see how the privileged used to live many years ago.

“Lovely house and garden”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2013

This is a house you could return to again and again and find new things to see and do or else simply return to enjoy the same pleasure again. I don't always visit mansions and find them worthy of putting on the list of "places to spend a whole day" but this fits the bill for doing just that. It's an interesting house and a large garden and grounds. The village is also a nice place for wandering about and there is a lovely woodland walk if you go past the old abbey gatehouse up the hill from the village centre.

“Somerset Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2013

We have visited this property before and as National Trust members he have free entry. A pretty house with a wonderful collection of furniture and well kept gardens The staff are very helpful and make you feel welcome. On the top floor is a splendid collection of portraits of Tudors and early Stuarts from the National Portrait Gallery all well explained with extra information too. The tea room is a bit cramped, though, when busy but if you find it too crowded you can always pop into the village. There is a small museum with a tearoom and when we recently visited we noticed that the local church was also seeling teas.

“"The eyes have it"”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2013

We stumbled across Montacute House on our way back home from a few days away. What a delight! The grounds were well manicured and the house full of exciting rooms. The paintings on display showing portraits of many of the Kings and Queens of England were wonderful. Look out for the set of four with dodgy eyes! Hilarious!
Well worth a visit for a few hours.
