“A very attractive location at which to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2013

This resort is beautifully located. Our motel unit was small and basic. Staff, many of whom were non-Australian, were friendly and helpful. Dinner in the restaurant was excellent and breakfast in the bar was OK. The main reason for staying here is to enjoy the spectacular scenery of the Glen Helen Gorge and nearby Ormiston Gorge, which did not disappoint. We have just read that the name is being changed to “Glen Helen Homestead Lodge”; we think this is a better name to describe the accommodation (though it does not indicate that there is such an excellent restaurant there).

Thank you for taking the time to review your visit.

We feel that a change in the name will better reflect what is on offer at Glen Helen, specifically an outback retreat focused on great service, relaxation and taking in the natural beauty of the area. As you mentioned, the quality of our restaurant is often a surprise to many guests although having now won three Golden Plate awards over the last two years it is gathering momentum. We are always proud of the efforts of our head chef Mark Jones in preparing such excellent quality food and that of our service staff who ensure an enjoyable experience is had by all.

Thank you again for your kind words and we look forward to welcoming you back to Glen Helen in the future.

A warm welcome and the beautiful scenery was a good start to our two night stay. As stated elsewhere, the rooms are basic but clean and comfortable. The restaurant food was first class, with friendly helpful service. After the meal there was live music in the adjoining bar area, with an accompanying slide show which we very much enjoyed, as did the party of schoolchildren staying on our first night!
Nearby were several places to visit but relaxing around the resort or on the deck was equally enjoyable!

We came down for one night, some camped, others in a motel room, very clean and the Territorian rate was very attractive. Food was fantastic, the pumpkin, cauliflower and blue cheese soup was a winner (please tell me the recipe!) Staff very friendly and helpful. Helicopter flight was great. Will be back again soon!

Dear ApacheJo,

Thanks for taking the time to review on your recent stay and especially your critique on the food. I doubt the chef will give away his recipe for his delicious soup!!.

It is great to hear from our local guests as local business is where our repeat customers come from!!

We will continue to support our local clients with a great rate and the chance for a getaway 'out of town'.

Kind regards

This is BASIC but clean accommodation in beautiful surroundings. Visited in late October - it had only rained twice in the previous 9 months, but billabong and Glen Helen gorge still had water in them - plenty enough in the latter for refreshing swim. The very surprising bit was the hotel restaurant - goodness knows how they produce this standard of food in the middle of nowhere. Food is relatively expensive but worth it.

Just had 2 nights at Glen Helen resort. Fantastic place to be based. So much to see in the area. Rooms are very basic, but clean. Everything worked.Restaurant food was fabulous, however it was expensive. I don't think it was in tune with basic hotel environment. There was no options to get a less expensive dinner alternative - a cheaper bar meal would be terrific if offered. The overall service was very good. Staff were helpful & friendly. Pool was in great order and very refreshing. Sitting on the back deck area watching the colours change as the sun set was great. Would gladly return.

Dear Brien W

thanks very much for taking the time to review Glen Helen Resort.

We appreciate your ideas about a Bar Menu. We have considered this, but when the Hotel is busy it is hard for the small kitchen to supply food of more than one style, although it is usually possible to quickly make a few chips or wedges. Normally the grill is fully occupied with restaurant orders.

Instead what we offer as an alternative is our BBQ packs, where the guest chooses what they would like from a list of meats, fish, vegies and salads, and we get the pack ready for you to cook yourself on our bbq out at the back of the Homestead. This is very popular, and I am sorry it did not seem to be offered to you, as it is a much cheaper option and suitably informal.

A lot of guest dine in our restaurant but choose just a light meal, salad or side dish, to economise.

While a high standard Restaurant may seem a little incongruous in a simple outback Hotel, we have chosen to work towards excellence in this area where we have full control of the standard, as in the Motel the refurbishment that is needed is in the hands of our landlord.

Once again, our thanks for your review

Kind regards

Shelagh O'Brien

We stayed at Glen Helen Resort during our 4x4 trip from Alice Springs to Ayers Rock and the Hotel is in a sweet spot to stay there. Staff is very friendly and food was excellent. Rooms are simple but clean so we really enjoyed our stay!

We stayed here for 1 night and found the room to be OK - very old but still clean. You pay a lot to be in the middle of the desert and while the room doesn't justify it, the setting makes up for it. Really beautiful and you feel like you are in another world! I also found the staff to be very nice and helpful, particularly a woman from Quebec who checked us in.

Room Tip: Get a river side view - so beautiful!

Dear Houb

Thankyou for taking the time to review Glen Helen Resort. You are one of many who feel the title of Resort is not necessarily appropriate. This name was given to the property in the late 1990s in an effort to modernise the image of the property internationally.

We have listened to these reports and suggestions and are in the process of preparing to re-brand as Glen Helen Homestead Lodge, which in fact was the original name of the tourist property.

We feel a 'lodge' better captures the unique outback character of the location, and fits in better with the 'guest house' atmosphere we try to create.

I am glad you received good service from our staff and could see that your simple room had been thoroughly cleaned.

Thanks again for your review

Kind regards
