“'Two delightful evenings in the same week'”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2013

This is the first time that I have bothered to make a comment on trip advisor, however my wife and I had two such pleasant evenings I feel that this charming restaurant is noteworthy. The meals were excellent, as was the service. We will certainly be returning.

“A Hidden Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2013

Stumbled across this lovely little restaurant, courtesy of Trip Advisor as we searched for a restaurant close to our gite in Duras. The staff were extremely welcoming, efficient and knowledgeable on the menus, both food and drink. The restaurant was busy for a Sunday due to a small wedding party in a private room yet lost none of its intimate charm and we were well looked after by our waiter.
The menu was not extensive but offered variety and appealing choices, both a la carte and fixed price (22 and 45 Euros). We enjoy fine dining as well as relaxed bistro style dining. Le Grand Cep, without any pretention, offered fine dining in a relaxing environment.
We would recommend highly to anyone with a love of good food and excellent service. Bill for two including both aperitifs and local wines, three courses, amuse bouches, delicious sorbets plus coffee was a little over 100 euros.
Well done Le Grand Cep.

“Delicate plates in cosy athmosphere!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2013 via mobile

We had already visited the town by bike but now we were back for a nice meal at the place with the magnificent old cep, a wine root stock of over 400 years, impressive! Meals were very nice presented and very nice, good wines and friendly service. Above French prices in other villages but for me worth it!

“Great Surprise in a Tiny Town”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2013

We ended up at Grand Cap because the restaurant we intended to got to in La Reole was full - who knew you needed reservations in June? We were terribly disappointed (having secured a baby sitter and all) but the Gite owner had mentioned there was a place in Monsegur she had heard was good. Well.....
Quaint atmosphere - we sat near the huge fireplace/BBQ under a glass ceiling on a rather cool night. The restaurant is an old wine making facility and retains its original architectural details. The waitress was extremely helpful and tolerated our bad French with humor. I ordered the prix fix - which included duck tartare and a delicious fish while my husband had a rotisserie pigeon. Yum, yum, yum!!! So elegant and beautifully presented. The wine list was big and we enjoyed a white Bordeaux that was outstanding. Even the dessert was show quality.
It's a romantic spot, without being stuffy or too formal. And don't miss the bar on the square after dinner for live music and a lively crowd of locals. A grand surprise and a great night on the town in midst of Aquitane.

“Mystery”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013

Two years ago, said we would never go again but last Saturday we were persuaded and ten of us went and ten of us would never go again. Of a three course fixed menu, the starter and main course were not available!! The alternative crab starter was finely cubed apple with a hint of crab(possibly) and avocado with lettuce. The main was a veal stew with rice.....miniscule portion....I had three lumps of veal, the best had five!!
Desert was fruit salad...at least not out of a tin!! Three hours to 'devour' that.....the aroma from the Pizza van opposite was more exciting...we were so hungry we were tempted.!!
These other good reviews are a mystery....living near, we have rarely met anyone who would rush back.
Collectively we feel slightly robbed!!

The real ‘mystery’ is how one can be so unfortunate to experience a second ‘negative’ passage at our establishment, whilst we have a 95% approval rate of our customers of which more than 75% are return customers !
Which is the objective reason why we’ve been growing so strongly and into our 3rd year now …
And we are especially popular with the regional expats, many who indeed have been supporting us earning the Certificate of Excellence 2013.
Some facts with regards to the visit this particular group; we know most of them well (5 different families/couples), since several are regulars. Unfortunately, their visit coincided with the ‘Fête de la Musique’ in Monségur, and we were totally sold out, having to refuse many. We only prepare fresh food and à la minute, and had already a very busy Friday evening too (the 21st is the official date for that festivity all over France).
They took the basic menu (22 €) which normally represents about 1/3 of the orders, over these 2 evenings it was more than 65 % ! So yes we were out of the original dishes choice, and replaced/upgraded them with what we had available (this being notified upon presentation of the carte/menus). The group arrived at 21.00 hrs, whilst the service had been going on since 19.00 hrs, nothing wrong with that of course, but it did put additional pressure being creative for the basic menu (we have 2 menus and the carte). As a consequence of these facts, we do agree that in the end the portions of the main course (veal carbonade) were too lightly served, for which we do apologise. And which we will graciously correct for these customers upon their next visit. That particular part of the meal was not to our quantity standards, but from the amuse bouche to the 3 dishes, we can 100% vouch for the quality and freshness, which is not put into question by this report.
So our apologies for this particular serving, as a result from an extremely busy evening, unexpected ordering pattern and the fact that we only sere homemade food.
We hope to be able to convince these unfortunate customers that and 95% success rate isn’t a ‘mystery’ after all, and on the contrary, to correct the lack of standards they were entitled to … we will spoil them on their next visit.
