Driving the Great Ocean Road starting in Queenscliff, we stopped for the night at Codrington Gardens, and were so glad we did. Codrington is about 30 km past Port Fairy, which itself is about 30 km past Warnambool, the closest town of any size on the Road.
Our 2-bedroom apartment in an old train car was lovely, meticulously maintained with comfortable furniture and pretty, distinctive decorations. It was the perfect place for us, a couple and a single. The bedrooms were separate enough for privacy, and the living room was comfortable for the 3 of us. There was even a decanter of port and tiny glasses for it on the table in the living room. Be aware, though, that there are steps up to the apartment, and once inside, there are steps down to one bedroom and up to the living room. The bathroom has a tiny shower and the water temperature varied - remember, these are old train cars! - but the 5-star towels made up for it.
Breakfast and dinner are available, but you have to tell them ahead if you want dinner. We didn't know that, and arrived about 7 p.m. when the kitchen had already closed. We were too tired after the long drive to drive back to town for dinner, and made do with some snacks we had with us. Breakfast was great, eggs cooked to order - I was even asked if I like my scrambled wetter or drier!
The grounds are beautiful, too. I laughed at the resident cockatoo that has, among other language, 2 different barks: a big dog bark for the German shepherd, and a little dog bark for the greyhound! The bird also gets his own cafe latte in the morning.
If you wanted to spend some time exploring the beaches this would be the perfect place to make your headquarters. And it was a great place to stop at the end of a long day of driving - all the comforts of home and none of the clean-up!

As soon as we saw your comment we checked the hot water to the shower & there was a problem, now being attended to. There shouldn't normally be an issue with the water temp.
Sorry for the inconvenience of dinner on night of arrival, I would have cooked you something on the fly if you’d asked, we do that often. Next time I’ll do it on the house for you, OK!
Now, don’t take this wrong, but the Bondi is described as a “double decker” train carriage, so steps are a necessity. We mention it often and we’re glad you mention it too, because it is something that has to be considered, especially for the infirm or toddlers.
Otherwise, thanks again and hope to see you some time soon.
