“Great stay with a great view. Location is awesome if you want to split time between Dutch and French sides.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2013

We stayed at the Westin dawn beach for six days in January and it was a very nice place to stay. When you visit this island, there's so much to see that you won't be spending much time in the room. But while we were in the room, we were comfortable with a great beach view from the balcony.

Pros: what you would expect from a Westin. Nice rooms with big showers and a tub. The room was right by the beach. Great view. Could sip your coffee in the morning or wine in the evening on the balcony and just chill out. Stayed in a couple of nights just because hanging out on the balcony and watching the ocean was fine with me. Reception staff was exceptional (thanks Sabrina and to the lady who brought me a cold refreshment while I checked in, after a six hour trip). One morning out rental car's battery was dead (thanks to me forgetting the lights on). A man and woman who were hotel staff noticed our predicament tried stopping other drivers to give us a boost but when several other tourists said no, the man went and brought his own car and saved our day from being a loss. Hotel is perfectly situated on the border between the French and Dutch side. I would definitely go back.

Cons: housekeeping staff needs some work. Each day, something was missing, whether it was towels, soap, refresh of coffee bags or glassware. Bartenders could be more attentive. I waited twenty minutes to order drinks at the bar in front lounge and he [bartender] wasn't even busy. I was actually gambling (spent a couple hundred bucks) and the only reason i went to front lounge bar was because no one was serving drinks in the casino. Pool bar was a bit better but also needs some attention. Even though I loved my room (see pic), the first room I was given was a parking lot view room (I had reserved and paid more for ocean view). The front desk quickly put me into another room, which I appreciate, but after a long flight and drive, I want to check in and relax in the room that I booked - the first time around.

We had a wonderful week vacation to the Westin Dawn Beach. It was everything we were looking for when wanting a relaxing, tropical winter vacation away from Boston. The resort is very nice, just don't expect a five star resort. We were lucky enough to have an ocean front room, which probably added to our high rating. There are a lot of rooms that have no ocean view and look into a courtyard or backside of the resort, so I recommend paying the extra to at least have an ocean view.

The staff at the resort was amazing, from the front desk to the housekeeping to the pool waiters. We have no complaints about the service at all. The pool area and beach are so clean and well maintained. It was really amazing. There was a good mix of couples and families, but it did seem more geared toward couples and adults. The ocean was pretty rough, so not great swimming for kids, but okay for adults if you are a strong swimmer.

We did a lot of traveling around the island, and I think it could get boring if you stayed at the resort the whole time. You do need a car if you want to explore, but if you just want to leave for dinners and the occasional excursion, then taxis would be fine. There are a few great restaurants within walking distance to the hotel.

Overall we would definitely stay here again. The rooms are very nice and clean with big bathrooms and nice balconies. The outdoor space with very relaxing and beautiful, and the swim-up bar was a bonus. People did reserve the prime pool chairs pretty early in the morning, which some people would find annoying, but it was not a problem for us. There was never a lack of lounge chairs. We had an excellent vacation and got everything we needed to relax and go back home refreshed.

We stayed for 3 days in Feb in a Starwood preferred guest room and truly enjoyed the resort. The meals were slightly high in price but comparable to the other westin properties. The room were well furnished and the property is well maintained. The surf was a little rough but you are on the Atlantic side of the island. You are close to the French border so it was a great time to visit sites such as Orient Beach while over there. The cab ride from the airport took about 30 minutes and was 30 dollars per couple. Car rental is available on site and very reasonable. The staff were super friendly and readily available for all our needs. The beach side lunch counter and poolside drink service is a great plus and reasonable price. The casino has a selection of slots and tables and no smoking goes into effect there March 1. It was a great place to relax and soak up the sun.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the second floor facing the ocean so you can sleep with your doors open off your b...

We stayed at the Westin Dawn Beach for six days last month after a Seabourn cruise. Given the level of service and amenities we had experienced on this luxury cruise line, we didn’t expect much form a Westin – just a good hotel. We were very pleasantly surprised by the level of service we received from 99.9% of the staff at this hotel. They were truly wonderful and accommodating. No problem or request was too big or too small. Kudos to the staff.

As others have indicated, the rooms are what you would expect at a Westin. We did note, however, that our beachfront room was suffering from a lot of rust – the drapes had rust spots along the top from metal loops, rust on the metal table lamps, rust on the bathroom fixtures etc. They are in need of renovation.

A few little notes: there is no regular turn-down service which is odd at a resort: you have to ask for it. If you want to take a shower after a day at the beach (which we do recommend), you’ll either have to call for turndown or extra towels, or take the ecologically friendly approach and reuse your towels. Hope you like damp towels, though. If you are in a beachfront room (cannot comment on others), the humidity will no not permit these towels to dry –even overnight.

The breakfast buffet is, in our opinion, extortion. It is impossible to have a light breakfast without over-paying. If you want cereal and a bagel, you’ll have to pay for the entire buffet since they do not offer cereal on the menu. We solved this by sharing an omelet off the menu (they are enormous). We do not eat huge breakfasts and resent having to pay for everyone else’s piled-up plates.

One other note: the spa was among the best we have ever been in. It is surprisingly large and beautiful, and the staff members who pampered us (both husband and wife) were pleasant and highly skilled. We were there the day before Valentine’s day so it was quiet.

We would stay at this hotel again.

Room Tip: Ocanfront rooms are worth the extra money. If you want a good view of the beach, try to get a room...

We returned last Friday from a week stay in St Martin at the Westin (Dutch Side). Nice, clean hotel with friendly staff but far from everything. We rented a car since I learned from my last trip to St Martin 5 years ago cabs get expensive! A small car for the week was $200.10. Which is reasonable since cabs fares can be $15-$25 one way and those add up quick. Driving was interesting. Roads are very rough and bumpy. Natives tend to drive crazy so beware! My boyfriend didn’t mind driving and after we figured out how to get around the island it became kinda fun…we had many laughs! I would just advise to be alert driving at night since we were warned it can be unsafe at times with crime etc.
We did not spend much time at the hotel. Most of our trip was spent at Orient Beach on the French side. It’s a very happening beach. Lots of bars/restaurants, water sports, native selling jewelry, people watching, bathing suits etc. The water and sand are beautiful! We enjoyed it very much. In case you are unaware there is a section of the beach that is totally nude and it is at the far end away from the regular beach. But there are topless women throughout the nude beach and regular beach (I did it myself, what the heck, no tan lines). Beach chairs are $7 a piece with umbrella included and gets you one free drink. We loved the beach bar called Aloha. They had amazing food and service there. Max is the guy who sets up the chairs and brings you drinks. Very nice guy!
We ventured out most nights to try different restaurants and we were never disappointed. Bamboo Bernie’s (in Maho) a GREAT sushi place with a great atmosphere/decor….make sure you sit inside and get a lounge table…very cool spot… we ended going there twice! Terrific! In Grand Case there was a good place called Bistrot Caribes (French cruise). It was pricey was delicious. Mr. Busby by the Westin was great for lunch and breakfast. Very reasonably priced. A must!
Phillipsburg was great for shopping. The have duty free shopping and great deals on diamonds. Very crowded on Tuesdays and Wednesdays since several cruise ships are in port that day. Store after store…women will love it!! 
Be sure to go to Sunset Beach Bar by the airport to watch the planes come in and leave. Amazing!
Airport was easy. No issues arriving or departing!
It was certainly a fun vacation! Can’t wait to go back!

My husband and I traveled to the Caribbean for our fourth Wind Star Cruise. We stayed 2 nights at the Westin Dawn Beach Resort in St. Maarten. Beautiful spot with a nice large pool and a white sandy beach. The restaurant was excellent, also. Folks that manage and work at the resort seemed to enjoy their job. They gave us a tour of their time share. We did not accept. However, we had dinner in their restaurant on them.

Room Tip: We went through Wind Star Cruises to book our facility. We could see the ocean around the corner fr...

This hotel is about 30 minutes from airport (so much closer than those on the french side). The rooms are large, and the shower is very large. The overall hotel and room decoration is ok (not caribbean but generic westin). The pool and swim up bar are the best features - a nice view onto a very wavy beach (i.e. not great for swimming but nice to look at).

The negative is the limited restaurant choices -- one all purpose and one steakhouse. (we didn't try the steakhouse as we have much better ones at home). The general restaurant has a limited menu, slow and forgetful service. And there is nothing else around for food options unless you take a cab into town (20 minutes, about $15-$20)

Housekeeping was just odd. The room was clean, but asking for extra towels (with a generous tip) yielded just one extra bath towel (for a total of 3 in the room). Not an extra set or even an extra bath towel per person. Nope just one towel. This happened both days of our stay. Then one day we had no shampoo... none. Had to track down a different maid cart. They need to work on service a bit.

The casino is small and not interesting, true of almost all caribbean casinos however. It's a decent hotel, clean, nice pool. But if we go to st Maarten again it wouldn't be my first choice.

Room Tip: ask for a pool or ocean view!
