My parents and I recently returned from our annual trip to Oyster Bay Beach Resort (their 10th, my 8th). Every year we look forward to visiting our 'home away from home' on The Friendly Island. This year we were particularly excited to see what changes had happened over the past year. During the last few years the staff at OBBR have worked endlessly to upgrade all of the units and make some changes to the resort. When we left last year they were preparing to work on the pool. Wow! It looks amazing! The infinity pool has always been such a beautiful and inviting pool but now with the addition of the underwater lights it added a whole new dimension.
There are so many aspects of the resort to praise, the staff in particular are wonderful. From the moment you arrive you are greeted with smiles and lots of hugs. It truly makes you feel like you've 'come home'. They all make you feel like they want you to have a wonderful time and enjoy their island. From Ann Marie the Assistant General Manager, to Edith at the bar, to Vince, Louis, Marlin, Russ, Hudson, Hilo and the rest of the friendly Sales & Entertainment staff. Everyone plays a part in making this resort a wonderful place to visit. This year we attended the Beach Party (secret location so I won't ruin the surprise) and we had a blast! The location is beautiful, the lunch we had was delicious and the staff had lots of activities planned to keep us laughing and dancing all day. We cannot wait to visit again next year. If it is your first time visiting the resort, I highly recommend you attend the orientation on Sunday morning. Its a great way to meet much of the staff and find out what kind of events they are organizing for the week. It's also a great way to learn about the island and places you may want to visit. Another great way to meet staff and other OBBR guests is at the party on Monday night. There is music and prizes as well as the sales and entertainment staff there. Beau Beau performs for a few hours, and keeps guests at the pool dancing well into the evening.
Our room was absolutely perfect, the views are amazing and I completely enjoyed sitting every morning just listening to the waves while enjoying a cup of coffee. The few maintenance issues we found when we arrived (dead light bulb, problem with the kitchen sink) were fixed immediately by the very friendly maintenance staff (Lorenzo). Our room was kept cleaned and well stocked with towels by our very sweet housekeeper Lorraine (we really hope she takes care of us next year!). I've read some reviews on this site where people complain about light bulbs, other broken items and ants in their rooms. It makes me wonder, did you even mention it to someone? If you had it would have been addressed immediately. One year we had an issue with our dishwasher, the maintenance staff spent quite a bit of time fixing it while it took a couple visits they didn't give up and it was fixed. We still laugh about it with the staff years later. We did not get upset we just reported the issue and went about our business, like at home things do sometimes break. The resort is always full given we stay for a few weeks we have the opportunity to see them turn over the majority of the rooms every single Saturday. This is something that always amazes us, it’s a lot of work and they do it every singe week with a smile.
Speaking of the maintenance staff and the resort in general, I love to walk and one thing I particularly enjoy is waking up early to watch the sunrise over Dawn Beach and wander around the resort. At every turn there is someone sweeping, painting, mopping, pruning the shrubs, etc. The pool guy is there every single morning scrubbing the pool, and Johan is hosing down the patio. The staff works very hard to keep the place looking great and it shows. Over the years we've been visiting we have seen a huge transformation with the addition of the Mainsail Building and the Lighthouse. We're very excited to return next year and see the new marina they are adding.
For first time visitors to the resort and Island, I would recommend renting a car (easily done onsite by the very helpful David). The resort is really great and Dawn Beach is beautiful but there are so many other places to see around the island. The resort has 2 restaurants. I have to give credit to the Chef at Infinity, the changes to the menu over the past couple of years kept me ordering while hanging at the pool a lot more than usual this visit. There are also a few restaurants just past the gate within walking distance all are great in their own ways. Busbee's is our favorite breakfast spot, and the newly improved market just across from it has delicious pastries and baguettes. The resort is located away from the hustle and bustle of Simpson Bay & Philipsburg but still close enough to drive there quickly. We particularly like the peace and quiet of being away from the busier areas.
We have come to truly love this resort and our annual visit, after 8 years of going to the same place people at home often ask 'why not try something new?’ I always reply with just visit there once and you will see how amazing the resort is. All in all the resort is perfect in every way, but don't take my word for it visit there and within minutes of arrival you'll see why yourself!
